Many people know about Rosetta Stone, but they may not have actually used it. I've been using the Japanese version of Rosetta Stone for over two years now, so I figured I'd give a little review of it to help those who wish to buy it.
If you want to buy it, you can grab it off Amazon here: amzn.to/1GLqddd

Thank you for the great review! We are currently living in Japan and I was thinking of purchasing Rosetta Stone to help learn a few more phrases to get by. I love the Japanese people, they are so kind and they try hard to speak English and really appreciate foreigners trying to speak even the smallest amount of Japanese. We have two more years left here so I think I will be purchasing this program now :)

I can't respond to your comments, Siavash Raissi, so I'm writing it here. Rosetta Stone is a little helpful, but it has its flaws in some areas. As for what kind of Japanese I would recommend, you can always start out with romaji, switch to hiragana and katakana (as soon as possible) and then make the switch to kanji. Rosetta Stone forces kanji on you by the third level, and there are some sections that teach you the hiragana and katakana if you don't know it.

You forgot the human aspect. You failed to say how much u learned or how affective it was. Pointing out pros and cons without saying if it achieved it's attended purpose is not a review. Every review has pros and cons. Hell even people have pros and cons. So to me this video failed to reach it's attended purpose, based off it's title that I searched

IMO it’s pretty good. I know someone who took the Italian one and he was able to talk with the locals in italy. Now, I am taking the Spanish course and it’s working great so far.

Hi thanks for this video, but you haven't mentioned if this software helped you in those 2 years to learn japanese. What did you learned from RS? like reading, understanding, writing.
@HectorTheCollector
@HectorTheCollector 8 жыл бұрын
+Emanoval Yes it helped. I think it helped more than the Spanish classes I took in high school and college. But I'd say it helped most with speaking and listening. It helped with reading a bit, but writing was very poor. I do not recommend Rosetta Stone to learn how to write at all, which I mentioned in the video.

+Hector Desu (ヘクターです) thanks for the fast reply and grats for the results which you archived already. I wanted to begin with a self-study since i've no time for a course. But i also learned a little bit to understand japanese from friends and by watching movies / series over the years. That was by the way the same way how i was able to learn english and i hadn't actually the purpose to learn it. Of course you can't even compare them but i'm still very proud of it^^. I just thought i should take this opportunity seriously this time and learn. Do you know Anki? i didn't knew anything about it but it seems very useful. You can basically create or download flashcards with it which can help you to memorise things faster. How far are you meanwhile with this language?. I think you should be N3?
@HectorTheCollector
@HectorTheCollector 8 жыл бұрын
Emanoval Anki? I haven't heard of it. I'm currently on Level 3 (of 3) Unit 11 (of 12), so I'm nearing the end, but I know there's much I still need to learn. I haven't had as much time to study Japanese lately since I went back to college to get my English degrees.

You can try out Rosetta Stone to get a grasp of it quickly, but I'm sure people will use slang naturally over more textbook stuff.

I have taken two years of Japanese at the high school I went to in Madison Wisconsin. I only took two out of four years due to the fact that I started there in my junior year. I would've taken all four of I could. In my experience with learning languages Japanese is by far one of the easiest ones I've learned. I know a tiny bit of mandarin, French, Italian, German and Russian those were hard as hell to learn especially mandarin. Spanish I took for a couple years and I don't know if it was the teacher or the curriculum for the course but I didn't learn anything. I have talent with learning languages since I picked up on learning where the English accents are from so I decided to indulge in learning languages for a hobby, my family keeps telling me that I should go to school to be a translator but never had the money or time to go to school. But with Rosetta Stone I was able to learn on my own time and at a much more affordable price.

How long do you think you should take on each lesson
@HectorTheCollector
@HectorTheCollector 8 жыл бұрын
+Swakwan Walden Each lesson has different time estimates. The core lessons have an estimated time of 30 minutes. The shortest reviews have an estimated time of five minutes. Of course, you should take however long you need to absorb the material.

+Hekuta-Kun (ヘクターくん) how long did it take you? Did u think it was hard?
@HectorTheCollector
@HectorTheCollector 8 жыл бұрын
Some of it can be a bit hard. The first level is pretty simple. It gets tougher as things go on. This should just be part of what you use. I also made friends with people living in Japan so I could get additional help. You may be able to go through all the lessons within three years if you study regularly.

One of my big questions to you is whether or not u consider Rosetta Stone to be helpful enough that u can go and have a conversation with a Japanese person or be able to travel to Japan and speak it fluently
@HectorTheCollector
@HectorTheCollector 8 жыл бұрын
+siavash raissi Sorry for the late reply. I don't know how I missed this. I think that depends on your dedication to studying. I've been able to have small conversations with some of my Japanese friends, and I'm at the end of Level 3 in Rosetta Stone. You will not be able to speak fluently because that would take many years of any language study.
@saoliath5000
@saoliath5000 7 жыл бұрын
im using it right now as well. it seems as though rosetta stone is a good starting point for learning japanese. with any language though you are going to have to step away fromjust "learning mediums" like rosetta stone and move on to more first hand learning. like if you were to teach someone english, you would probably start by showing them full length sentences and very proper (or very specific) speech even though that's not necessarily how people speak normally. its necessary though

I'm taking Japanese 1 but I feel like I'm falling a little behind. Our teacher moves on very fast and sometimes isn't clear with an example before asking us to speak it with our partner, so after watching this I think I'll get it to help me along since I'll be aware of the mistakes with "wo" and "wa" and such. Thanks! :)

+Hekuta-Kun Rosetta Stone does have a flaw and it's a critical one: あまりにも多くの丁寧語 (Too much polite Japanese!)!At least less expensive language teaching options like FluentU "mixes it up" a bit with polite and plain Japanese. However, if you paid a lot a money like I'd had for Rosetta Stone, at least you should be able to use what you've learned.
@HectorTheCollector
@HectorTheCollector 8 жыл бұрын

+Hekuta-Kun (ヘクターくん) That's nice if you just met someone from Japan, but then what happens after one gets better acquainted? Moreover, I've seen enough of Japanese film to think I'm going to need much more than "desu/masu" form, thus some mastery beyond that would be helpful.
@saoliath5000
@saoliath5000 7 жыл бұрын
i suppose but i think that can be learned later to a degree. when first meeting people you would be polite anyway right? and if you get close to fluency at some point, learning more casual speech may be easier than just learning it all as a jumbled mess all at once

Thanks for the really useful and in depth review of this, really appreciate that you've taken the time to do this to help out those like me who are thinking of buying it. It sounds like overall it's worth doing, but do you know if there have been any changes to how you buy the levels / packages since this video? As I'm looking at it now here goo.gl/AP1q7L and it seems they now do either 12/24 month subscription or a one off desktop download, but there is no mention of levels 1,2 or 3.I took a Japanese language classroom course many years ago, but because I never used it day to day afterwards I've since forgotten most of what I learnt so this looks like a good way to start again. Are there any other methods / courses you would recommend? Thanks again.
@HectorTheCollector
@HectorTheCollector 8 жыл бұрын
+Matt Barber (IndieDevM) The subscription seems to be the same thing as the desktop version, but you have to keep paying to access the lessons. With the desktop version it's a one time payment for lesson 1 or lessons 1-3.
