Of all the recordings on You Tubes, she captures the spirit of Mendelssohn. I am particularly in love with the 4th variation.

I heard this same virtuous elegant piece of Mendelssohn piano also sounded by Brendel, Richter and Zimmermann .. are all these great teachers and it is very difficult that I can find in them some defects or deficiencies but I noticed that Rosita Renard plays this piece with masculine energy and enthusiasm while Brendel with feminine precision and lightness .. very love of Brendel technique and I find that, for playing Mendelson, who was an elegant and a great Master in Olympian serenity - ( Casella in Il Pianoforte ) - is much more calibrated and in tune..... with my modest opinion ... .. and I thank those who posted this piece and all these great Masters who have performed ...

Bravo!, and thank you so much for posting this! Of course my opinion can be quite wrong, but Rosita's rendering of these Mendelssohn's Variations is the only one I have heard that has, for me, a flavor of J. S. Bach in it, and if I recall well and Felix was the one that revived great Bach's music in the middle of the Romantic period, it would be not much wonder that this work really has deliberate reminiscences of Bach, and Rosita was the one to feel it and made them to surface.

A high-caliber interpretation and very clean for a live performance of such an intensity.

You can tell from this performance that she was a great pianist...a strong personality, backed by a wonderfully fluent and supple technique. It is too bad she didn't perform more and have a longer life...she must have been a wonderful teacher

The mix, that I perceive, or feel, of both sober classic baroque accents and sober romantic sentiment in the work and the rendering, makes me appreciate both, extremely. No other one rendering I know, by so very far, makes hear so, so good this work, for me. Thank you very much again, you not only made my day, nor my week, but enhanced my life. Excuse the verbiage, but I really got carried away hearing this.

Sic. Wikipedia

Great post, wonderful playing! I had never heard of her before, but I will add her immediately to my "great female pianists of the past" playlist! ;-)

Another great chilean pianist of glorious past. Pity her career was cut unfairly short only four months after her magnificent Carnegie Hall appearance on the 19th of January 1949, from which this recording was taken. This live interpretation of Félix Mendelssohn's Variations Sérieuses, in D Minor, Opus 54, is indeed a very passionate and dedicated rendition by Rosita Renard, a disciplined pianist who could have reached as much artistic perfection, fame and glory as her compatriot and condisciple Maestro Claudio Arrau.

I have the 2cd set of her recordings collected, kinda regret the absence of them as this is the only track available at the moment.

Does anyone know if she recorded a few rescords of popular music in the early thirties under the name of "Renara".?

Certainly playing of great passion and élan, but it's a fairly broad brush approach and rather scrappy at times (especially at the end). Is it "better" than Richter's performance, as several claim? Is Bordeaux better than Burgundy? Is Raphael better than Michelangelo? Both have their beauties and their faults. Let's enjoy the former and forgive the latter. Thanks for posting.
