I know everyone acknowledges Brawn and Dennis as gods, but i think Pat Symonds is often overlooked as one of the great technical directors too. He took the Williams team from a period of absolute dogs, to their period of brilliance in the 80s and 90s. If anyones got any time, really recommend the Williams Documentary

Wrong, Symonds literally stayed with the same team from 1980 to 2009 (Enstone). He stopped by for two seasons in 2013 though. However, he is one of the elite design chiefs of the last 30 years though. Dennis isn’t a designer. So, he can’t be thought of like Brawn and Symonds who focused 90% on engineering. Instead, Ron was like a turbo charged combination of big picture, operations manager, micro manager, marketing manager, talent account, etc. all in one.

@RacingAtHome7 жыл бұрын
And with a single tyre company, that could have been all of the cars which would be worse.
@legoferrari147 жыл бұрын
JakeTV - a major reason that happened was because competition was forcing michelin to focus so much on grip that the durability suffered. Simply put that blowout probably wouldn't have happened, at least not as severely, if Michelin or even Bridgestone dropped out following the 2003, or possibly even the 2004 season, as the tyre standardisation which would've ensued meant that development could be slowed to allow the tyres to be tested more thoroughly before being deployed in racing conditions.
@RacingAtHome7 жыл бұрын
The main reason why Bridgestone didn't have the issues was because Firestone was running the Indy 500 earlier that year and was able to give information about the circuit. Michelin didn't have access to that information because Firestone is Bridgestone's American company. It was a new diamond cut surface which cut the tyre and Bridgestone were able to compensate. If it was only Michelin, it would have been even worse as Michelin would still not have access to this information.
@michaelroberts202311 жыл бұрын
When ross brawn says 'we weren't aware of this' the first word that comes into my head is 'lie'. They damn well knew about the michelin tyres, but decided to wait until they weren't dominant. Thankfully, when fernando alonso took the title from ferrari in 2005, ferrari couldn't come up with any political or legal crap, and had no answer.
@SocietyUnplugged7 жыл бұрын
The 2005 was a ridiculous season. Bernie knew Ferrari created a special short stint car with massive tire degradation. So at the last minute Bernie introduced the tire change ban. Ferrari complaint but Bernie said that sporting regulation can be changed any time while technical regulation should be announced 1,5 years ahead. Tire rules are part of the sporting regulation and not technical regulation so Bernie did this as late as possible time so Ferrari couldn't prepare properly. Both McLaren and Renault were good on the Michelin tires in 2004 and as expected they fought for the title. It's not really fair to say Ferrari had no answer, they didn't had enough time. But karma is a bitch because that year will not only be recognized as Bernie's most stupid year but also the idiot race in Indianapolis as the worse race in F1's history. F1 started to lose a lot of fans and F1 started to fall down and needed more and more middle-east circuits to make the sport possible. As an CEO [Bernie] you should never bend the rules to end the dominance of an team without regards of the fans or other teams. Because all these constant changes made teams like BMW and Toyota eventually leave the sport. Bernie should have stopped in 2004, after that all decisions made made the sport rarely better. When the tire ban was ended in 2006 Ross build his last Ferrari F1 car for 2007 and it gave Ferrari the championship. It speaks for itself how stupid the 2005 season actually was.

The most blatant and rigged championship ever - full stop. With 3 races to go Ferrari cries foul to the FIA who then reneges on their agreement to Michelin in order to gift Ferrari/Schumacher with the title. And people call this a sport? In Hungary Ferrari couldn't even make it to the top 8 due to the Michelin dominance and as soon as they were forced to change their tire widths, the Scuderia wins the remaining 3 races of the season. Kimi Raikkonen is the true champion of 2003. Michael has 2 WDC's in the pocket thanks to the FIA - 1994 & 2003
@jwdoesleagueracing5 жыл бұрын
tbh, this didn't really give Ferrari that much of an advantage, while yes they did win the final 3 races, let's break those 3 races down. Ferrari whilst yes won in Italy, they didn't dominate the race as Montoya who was on Michelins gave them a run for their money. USA, Michael was lucky to win that race because of the wet conditions and the superior Bridgestone intermediates, when it was dry Kimi who was using Michelins was unstoppable. And in Japan if you think about it, Rubens was lucky to win that race and even have pole because in qualifying it was mixed conditions and on top of that, when the race got going, Montoya passed him at spoon and probably would've won the race had his car not broke down. Even Alonso was harrying him. From what I gathered, nothing got done to the width of the tyres from Michelin, it only effected their development in Monza. The last 2 races they were fine.
@ChrisMcLaren6664 жыл бұрын
@@jwdoesleagueracing do you realize the win in Monza was still crucial to win the championship? Even if the last two races weren't an issue for the michelin teams, ferrari still went from a horrible performance in hungary to win the next race thanks to this political gift by fia. A magnificent season ruined by the ferrari/ross brawn political power. Bwoah.
@jwdoesleagueracing4 жыл бұрын
@@ChrisMcLaren666 I never said the win wasn't crucial for him to winning the championship, my point was that the Bridgestones didn't have that much of an advantage at Monza as people are making out as Montoya on Michelins still gave them a run for their money. He would've probably had a crack at the win had it not been for Frentzen getting in the way.
@tomwells80932 жыл бұрын
@@jwdoesleagueracing Are you a little touched in the head? It didn't change much? Haha. Ferraris would have been lucky to finish in the points in any of the last 3 races, without them and FIA cheating to make up new rules for tyres. The championship would have been a three way fight in Japan. With either Montoya or Raikkonen taking it. No doubt about it. Even with the tyre change Michael could barely get a point in Japan. Montoya wouldn't have been taken out by Barrichello in USA and also have a penalty when he should have been pitting for wets. FIA did everything they could to have Ferrari win

Head and Brawn are both pretty forceful characters. It's a bit like a lot of regulations, including the "no degree of flexibility" regulation for bodywork, in that the rule about the width of the tread applies at all times, but the FIA can only check it at scrutineering. Everyone knew the construction of the Michelin tyre meant it exceeded the allowed tread width during cornering, but Ferrari's assumption was that the when the car came in for post-race scrutineering and the tyre cooled, it would revert to its original shape and, when measured, it would be legal again. When it came to Ferrari's attention that the Michelin tyres weren't reverting to their pre-race dimensions after having completed a race stint, they asked the FIA to check the tread width in post-race scrutineering, which they're entitled to do. The Michelin runners had no grounds to complain about that since the tyre has to conform to the specified dimensions at all times. And for Patrick Head to say they've been using the same mould for two years is irrelevant, because the dimensions of the tyre when it was new wasn't in question. If you change the construction, the dimensions of the tyre may change with use, and that was the allegation.

You could have listened more carefully to what the michelin man said before writing this wall-of-text of crap. In today's F1 something like this could never happen, worst case scenario they would clarify the rule and make the change mandatory for next season. FIA forced michelin to build a completely new tyre in three weeks. Three freaking weeks. Today Pirelli prepare and build their tyres MONTHS in advance before the race. Michelin had to find a solution in three weeks, in no way they could have kept their performance for Monza. They ruined one of the most exciting and close season in the history of F1.

@rdtli Interestingly, on those terms, you're also wrong. Relatively speaking, Brawn GP is the most successful F1 team, with a 100% constructors and drivers championship win rate.
@marcusaureliusantoninusaug21614 жыл бұрын
Ross Brawn: 8 Constructor's Championships, enough said. He totally put Patrick Head in his place. People still mad McLaren and Williams couldn't beat Ferrari even when the FIA changed the rules basically every year from 2002 onwards to break Ferrari's dominance, which only happened in 2005 after they found the one weak link, the Bridgestone tyres construction which wasn't suited to do a whole race distance, so the FIA made it mandatory in 2005 for tyres to do a full race distance...
@tomwells80932 жыл бұрын
Do you not understand what happened here? Ferrari and FIA made up a new tyre ruling because they were getting beat. Changed it with a few races left so Ferrari would win. If that's not cheating I don't know what is

@MrPoundNote Todt being the president of FIA has nothing to do with penalties given out in race tracks, is not his job, there's stewards for that, he doesn't penalize any event that takes place under FIA being Rally, GT or whatever... it works like that in any company, the president has other jobs, and like any other president of any company, or organization, his job is being monitored by many.

So ferrari could have complained at imola 2001, but then they decided, no we'll wait until barrichello has 2 successive reitrements in a row, and when michael schumacher has 1 eighth place finish and one seventh place finish. Not during the season where we are dominant. No let's wait until we're backed into a corner.

@MastaMS218 жыл бұрын
Typical Ferrari : they were losing the champ', so they complained about an technical advantage which was okay all the time and now banned by the FIA because Ferrari said so. They did the same with McLaren in 98 with their breaking system and Renault in 2006 with mass dumper
@xflynskywlkr278 жыл бұрын
MastaMS21 yeah, Ferrari should just sit there and let other teams get away with cheating. Don't blame them , blame Michelin for not adhering to the rules. oh and FYI, it was McLaren who protested the mass damper in 2006, not Ferrari
@AidanMillward8 жыл бұрын
Considering Ferrari got Bridgestone to make the tyres specifically to fit their car and their car only, they are the last people that can cry about unfair advantages.
@xflynskywlkr278 жыл бұрын
There was no rule stopping other teams from doing the same with Michelin. Whine about Ferrari all you want, but they weren't the ones breaking the rules.
@MastaMS218 жыл бұрын
Michelin wasn't cheating. Everybody knew Michelin made wider tyres in 2003 and during the whole summer, FIA said they were legal. Then, after Hungary when Ferrari made his worst perf of the year, they suddenly claim Michelin tyres are illegal and then FIA decided to change the rule in order to make Michelin illegal. Nobody can deny this fact : FIA was Ferrari International Assistance for years and even not F1 fans saw that. (Yes it was McLaren who protested in 2006, my bad. But Ferrari was once again the team which benefit from this)

For those who believe the tyre wasn't modified, how does michael schumacher go from an eigth place finish to winning the italian grand prix in the fastest average speed of all time in f1? Not forgetting they had 38 races to complain, and decided to wait until that point when they were struggling. I'm sure michelin had to modify the tyre at some point, even if michelin said they didn't. How do we know?

Don't forget that Brawn and the rest of his chest team also get the FIA to make up new rules to ban competitors innovations. Like McLaren second brake, Renaults Mass Damper, etc. Ultimate cheating was 2009 with the double diffuser. Hes a disgrace to F1 and the world in general.
