The real problem with modern religion, is that it does not have a good sense of tradition, and without tradition, there is knowledge but no wisdom

Describe what you mean by "modern religion"? We talking new age spirituality or something else?
@TedSeeber

@@sith1986 It is not just the new age spirituality. It's the "Emergence" Christianity. It's the reliance on scientism and materialistic thinking that says that everything that happened before you were born does not matter. It's Sufism in Islam, it's Zen in Buddhism, it's every nihilist philosophy that has ever been created. All cults start by seeking to cut you off from your history- from how you got here from where your ancestors were. And that is a vital mistake.

@@TedSeeber the problem is you speak of the religions like you know them but have no real knowledge of them. They all address where you came from. Also you dont get knowledge from rituals that you seem to think. You get it from conversations discussions and observations. What you miss is that rituals are there to keep you stuck in the religion. If you look at christian rituals you would think that they are brain washing them but yours are the correct rituals and religion eventhough its because you are blind to the facts.

@@alandrian what you miss in ritual is that it is a form of a discussion, a coversation with the past, and an observation of things long past. Things your modernism knows nothing of.

@buymebluepills thank you at least for your login name. I never realized that little jab from The Matrix at the sexual revolution, for the most famous blue pill is Viagra. And the red pilled are often incels.

Randomly came across a video of Tara Isabella Burton speaking years ago at a lecture series put on by The Satanic Temple. Her speech was brilliant...she's a very smart young lady. Then I stumbled across this....and wow, she's really honed her skills since then! Very interesting thoughts from her. Also...as a liberal myself, I found this "conference" rather intriguing. Apparently it's more or less a _conservative_ discussion about alternative religion in modern America. And yet....everyone seems very intelligent, informed, and honestly discussing the issues. There's no hyperbole or insulting or the fetishization of ignorance. I quite simply have never ever seen a group of conservatives discuss an issue like this....in this manner. It's so rare these days that it's honestly quite shocking to see conservatives speaking like this. Sadly, modern conservatism in America has gone way way WAY off the deep end and basically entirely given up on informed intelligence and ethical reasoning. So it was quite refreshing to come across this video.... Unfortunately, I'm pretty damn sure this is a HUGE exception to the overall rule. Sure wish that would change. Even though I'm a liberal....it's kinda frustrating that the other side can't even keep up in most debates. They either accept the most insane notions....or just deny reality. But that's not what was on display here...and I wish that was far more common than it is.

I wouldn't say that most liberals are intelligent and most conservatives are stupid, but that most people are stupid on either half of the political divide. Figures like Trump and AOC seem to be appealing to the lowest common denominator in their parties.

TIB's mention of alienation touches on something essential. These various spiritualities, for lack of a better term, function as means of rationalizing the cultural status quo. Imagine living in a consumerist society. Living in such a society can feel alienating and disorienting if you do not accept the principles of consumerism. You can respond by spiritualizing consumerism to give it an ultimate legitimacy so that it sits well with your conscience. If something is ultimately true, it allows you to surrender to it and to be at peace with it. It allows you to maintain a sense of integrity and authenticity. Wokeness capitalizes on the same impulse by accusing the culture of inauthenticity, and not just the exploitative liberal materialist commercialism, but ostensibly all of Christian civilization. It construes it as a nefarious rationalization of tyranny (along Marxian lines). The natural impulse is to reject and attack such a thing. So on the one hand, you have people who rationalize their conformity with the culture, and on the other hand, you have those who attempt to conform the culture to themselves and remake it in their own image.

However incorrect, I like how TIB frames the conversation between intuitionalism and institutionalism versus Christianity and paganism (14:07). She then goes on to remix this new movement away from the intuition towards a feeling of goodness, again, however incorrect and misguided. I fall into the camp of a Hellenic philosopher, call me a pagan if you will.

this all boils down to worship of self vs worship of God, the same dichotomy it’s always been. Worship of self is just winning at the moment.

Steven is funny to listen to because he doesn't have understanding of spirituality neither does the people he reads. Keeps talking about paganism is clear indication that he has his view but doesn't read up on the other side.
