Ross always loved Elizabeth, she always had his heart

Not according to the books. The series had to make Elizabeth seem like a better person than she is the source material as the TV show writer thought it would be hard for people to understand why Ross could love such a woman. So yeah, he stopped loving her after that night. And she never really loved Ross

@@AciuPoldark Ross and demalza their daughter asks her mother if it's a bad thing that her father and Elizabeth once fell in love with each other. "No, it's not, in fact, it went on all their lives," Demelza says. The fact that Ross somehow continues to love Elizabeth drives people crazy and that's why they don't accept it. And writer is always confirmed in the books. he says it's 30 years later. And a few years after Elizabeth died, Geoffey tells Charles, "Your mother's death was very early, we haven't been seeing each other much lately, but it created a deep and unbridgeable void in me." I hope one day you will understand how deep these lines mean. People don't like Elizabeth's character, they hate the fact that she is so loved by men. It's not out of character to think this isn't fair to demalza. This is how it works in real life too. We don't love the person we love just because he is good and selfless. The heart does not choose.

Yours is something special. I shall never be lucky enough to get a man like him; and of course I shall never be able to be like you…’’ In a way it continued because of Valentine and the permanent reminder of what happened , because of the rift between the two families which was a constant pain , the relationship between George and Ross ( which is also the context for the above dialogue ) not because Ross still loved Elizabeth. This is what happens when you don’t know the material the author of the books, Winston Graham stated in an interview that ‘Poldark is the story of a man being denied the woman he loves, once he has her, he realises he really loves his wife’’ The author himself confirmed this so yeah , I am gonna take his word for it anf not the assessment of someone who didn’t even read the source material; you taking a comment out of context without having read the books, without actually understanding what that comment is, doesn’t help you with your statement as much as you think. People don’t have a problem with Elizabeth, they just have a problem with people like you not understanding the story and creating a narrative that’s just not there. Instead of taking snippets from other people, why not just read the books yourself? They are a real treat Of course Ross held affection for Elizabeth, like you do for someone you once loved and considered a friend, and he was , rightfully so, very sad when she died, but it was not romantic anymore.

@@meltemruz But from what I gathered ~ while Ross loved Elizabeth all his life, he DID NOT love her in the SAME way as he once did. He loved her with FONDNESS afterwards. He loved Demelza once he came to the realization (which was after Elizabeth had married George) and the time they ran into one another in the church - upon visiting Aunt Agatha's grave. That's where he kissed her, that's where Prudie saw him kissing her. It was a kiss of FONDNESS, not LOVE LOVE. But LIKE LOVE. He was after that point in LIKE with her. So I interpreted all that. And when Demelza asked him, "Ross, what needed attending to at the graveyard?" he fantasized that he sat down on the bed and told Demelza he ran into Elizabeth and kissed her. So at that point (and more so after she died, when they both exchanged notes on their feelings Hugh dying vs Elizabeth dying) .....at that point Ross was very clear that he no longer LOVED Elizabeth. Correct me if I am perceiving this entire scenario wrongly.

@@AciuPoldark I tend to agree with you that Elizabeth may never have REALLY loved Ross. If anything she was rather in like with the ideal of him. The idea of him being such a convenient creature (as they would say). Elizabeth was very selfish, self-centered, vain, and put high emphasis on her looks (for which one really can't blame her) as that appeared to have gotten her the results she was after easily. Elizabeth also was never one to confront much because it was inconvenient. Sure, there was the occasional issue such as the headstone for Aunt Agatha where she was fierce about how she felt and with Demelza's brothers where she honorably for once creamed George another butthole that he makes them the villain and punishes them for their only "crime of being related to Ross." Where Demelza stood up for issues based on their merits and justice. THAT..... takes a lot of energy, nerves, perseverance - all those characteristics Elizabeth was lacking grossly. But Ross would have done all those "biddings" for those issues, which would have been the convenience of Elizabeth looking good by proxy. Namely looking good in the shadows of Ross' doings, works, ethics, dignity you name it.

And isn't beauty in the eyes of the beholder? All in all, Elizabeth began to turn me off early on with her lack of character. She was a coward who didn't have the conviction of her own true wants and desires. She always took the path of easiest resistance (and there is not necessarily anything or much wrong with doing that SOMETIMES. But she did it MOSTLY). Demelza on the other hand fought for what she felt was the right thing to do or the right thing to happen. And if she had done her hair a little more fancily and worn nicer fancy clothing, she would have looked just as lovely as Elizabeth did without all that.

They were very different and also the main reason why Ross loved Demelza and no longer loved Elizabeth. It’s like he says in the books: “Oh, in a picture gallery I cannot say that three out of five men would not pick a different picture from mine. It is not just looks, it is what’s behind them; it’s the familiarity of knowing someone intimately and yet wanting them all over again; it’s the total commitment of personality; it’s the ultimate spark between two people…” That spark and love was not there for Elizabeth because what he felt for her was based on an idealised, unreal idea of a woman, while Demelza was his reality and true love. Ross eventually comes to realise the true face of Elizabeth when she betrays their friendship by agreeing to marry George, an awful, awful man and his direst enemy. That’s when the veil fell off and he saw her true face. She may have been beautiful on the outside but empty, manipulative and ugly on the inside.
