Fun fact about the voices in Resident Evil: The actors explained that when they were given lines to read, the japanese guy directing them couldn't actually speak much english, so he kept on insisting they'd put emphasis on the words that he thought sounded cool. This goes a _long_ way to explain the bizarre readings.

Also IIRC several of them weren't voice actors, they were just English speakers who happened to be in Japan at the time and were willing to do it, because Capcom refused to have the dialogue recorded elsewhere and sent to them.

My favorite part about these videos, besides Ross's sense of humor, is his absolute dedication to keep playing and keep going despite countless shitty gameplay mechanics.

Like he did with The Last Stand: Union City, right? He quit a game exploding with potential that was created by ONE man because of a full screen issue that could've been resolved by using the cinematic mode on Kongregate. I mean I love Ross and have been following him since his Machinima days and anticipate his videos to an unhealthy extreme, but what he did to that game was unacceptable.

For me, it's the mystery and surprises of what's coming next. He has a habit of saying "I'll save that for later" and the way he presents it gives it a lot of reward for all the weird and interesting surprises he finds in each game. There were a lot of times where I had no clue what to expect next and his tone of voice really drives that feeling in his videos. Also, as a game developer, I really like his critical analysis on what he wants from a game. I finished watching the whole series just today after binge watching for a few nights this weekend.

I watched some other gameplay videos and they didn't have so much trouble with the game. I went to the part where the one hit kill enemies appear and they were taking 1/5 of the wizard's health instead. I haven't found other reviews mentioning a spike this bad in difficulty, in fact what I've read is that there's no tension because you can teleport to safety and heal at any moment just pressing a key.

+zaK1946 Sometimes localization adds bugs, for example right now I'm playing Faxanadu and the American version has two major bugs involving two items which should make the game easier and they actually make it harder (one instead of improving your damage decreases it and another becomes worse as you level up).

This game wouldn't have been so bad if they added grenades. Not modern grenades, but clay pots with gunpowder inside of them and are lit by a fuse that gives you thirty seconds to throw them. The monster that kills in one hit and takes 103 hits to take down would only take three hits after being hit with one.

This game had so much effort put into it though, like it could have actually been good if the developers had bothered to, you know, integrate play testing and refactoring into their pipeline. I feel like the developers of this title didn't program at all, they just made art assets as a reskin of another engine. I wonder if a simple mod/rebalance could make it a cult-classic in a Wiesau kind of way.

This difficulty spike makes me think that the anti-piracy code glitched and got triggered for a legit game.
@Tucher97
@Tucher97 5 жыл бұрын
That does and can happen but it comes to a problem of some devs not knowing how to do something in particular, nor try to fix it, worse if you bought a legit game edit:I should mention that such codings are sensative and can be set off in numorous ways, or a certain file that uses a not so common file format that the game has to detect to see if the game is legit, this has problems as if you try reformatting the game files for being put on an Emarketpalce like steam or GOG then you will run into problems real quickly but for hte most part you can simply reinstall the game and I mean REINSTALL not uninstall then install, it be better as a developer to make the game, make a bocus pirated version that has a file disguised as an esential file and proceed to flood a number of torrents with that and with luck it could work

Incidentally, the reason for the abysmal quality of the original RE's voice acting wasn't necessarily because the actors themselves were bad, but rather because the voice director for that game didn't speak a lick of English, and he ended up just stitching together the takes that he thought sounded cool to his ears. It probably sounds perfectly fine if you don't speak any English.

*This game is a metaphore for living in Poland.* Now, it might seem like a shallow joke, but check this out: There are 3 classes, but only one doesn't hinder your progress There's only one way to win - taking advantage of the flaws in the system If you want to get anywhere, everyone is against you Talking to other people is rarely any fun - they're shallow and boring Doing simple things like selling and buying shit is full of obstacles for no reason You have no idea how all of this is supposed to work You never get a break Your progress is dependant on how expensive the things you own are Everything looks old and not always in a good way The ending is not rewarding at all and getting to it is a horrible grind that never seems to end No one can speak English that well, even if it seems bearable at first glance People put a lot of effort, time and life into this existing and it's hard to figure out why Every boss is shitty! @bartekkko 8 жыл бұрын
+Matthew Pherigo building outward from a core isn't always as easy as it sounds. Take doom for example. At it's core, everything fits together, from the weapons, through movement to all enemies, but none of that would matter if the level design was like that from the well of souls. If you had to fight ten cyberdemons in level three, with just a pistol and a shotgun, it would have been a bad game even though the core is solid, because the levels are not designed in accordance with the core.

I don't know if anyone has ever noticed this, but at 34:47, while you're buying potions, the price says they're 100 a pop. However, buying them attaches them to your cursor, forcing you to drag it to your inventory to confirm the purchase. I watched carefully at the gold counter, and I noticed that when you accidentally clicked again and sold the potion *you just bought,* you only got 25 gold back. That's right, you paid 75 gold, *FOR NOTHING,* just because you accidentally clicked one too many times. Great store design, game!

It's actually better to have all text dialog than having any bad voice acting. Our brain fills in many blanks through imagination. I can't get over "for a thousand years a chosen one was picked to stand vigil," that's clunky and redundant, that's like "the selected one was decided." It should be something like "for a thousand years one was chosen to stand vigil," "for a thousand years a chosen one stood vigil," something like that.

Oh, and I just looked up reviews of this game online. None of them even mention the guy who takes over a hundred hits to kill, and takes you out in one. You'd think someone, *ANYONE* who actually played the game would've mentioned the fact that the warrior class is completely unplayable, and the archer only barely playable. Something happened to your copy, Ross. It must be anti-piracy, or some kind of freak data corruption, or the Elder Gods messing with your game.

I cant help but wonder if that abrupt difficulty hike at level three that only stays at level three is the result of some anti-piracy measure that was either activated because of a bug, or because Ross downloaded the game for free and the game became self-aware and realized that. For those who don't know what I'm talking about, an anti-piracy measure inside a game was a protective measure in a game that only made it playable to the people that bought it. These measures used to revolve around needing curtain codes on sheets of paper in order to play a game. Now-a-days, that shit's basically extinct. But some developers have secret ways of trolling game pirates through special lines of code activated only when their game is downloaded for free. These measures could be anything. For example, "Game Dev.Tycoon"'s anti piracy measure has your in-game company go out of business due to fictional pirates in the game. "Skull Girls" gives you a fake error message that makes no goddamn sense. Arma II makes your character permanently drunk and floods the screen with the game's logo. Crow-Team's "Talos Principal" features an elevator that just plain refuses to work if you pirated the game, not allowing you to finish the game at all. I could definitely see these Developers easily doing something like making one level impossible even for them to slog through. But unfortunately for them, Ross is just too damn stubborn to quit.

Spyro is on the list too. If you play first pirated copies, then half way trough the game one of the characters will say that you are playing a pirated game and I quote: "instabilities may occur". After that message you game will glitch in many ways(like reseting all your money from time to time, not letting you safe and other bizarre things), but the cherry on top is that it doesn't let you complete the game, because after certain point it just freezes and resets all your progress.

It's taken me multiple watches to catch this, but the top 2nd-from-the-left number is a running count of the number of enemies left in the level you are on, going down for each enemy you kill. I assume that's why the game mentions at the final conflict "You have cleared the area of all beasts." What an interesting mechanic. I'm guessing it was both a boon and an emblem of torment for Ross, as he could see close the end of the level was, but also how far away the end of the level was.

Hey Ross. Don't know if you'll read it, but I'll write anyway. I picked up the game and started playing it. It really isn't all that bad, I agree with you. Night and day transition, weather, fancy item enhancement mechanic - clearly some passion was put into it. But I digress. Currently I am at the swamps, using melee character. Playing on Hard, obviously. Its really not all that bad. That guy, Vred Solidus? Killed in ~20 hits. I guess I'll just tell you how I tried to tackle the obvious problem you mentioned about inability to tank all the hits. One skill, one particular weapon. Defensive skill - Intimidation. It lowers the speed of melee attacks mobs use in your vicinity. Doesn't seem all that usefull until you try kiting them using melee character. Its actually possible. If you pull back before attack animation of the monster reaches a certain point - he misses. And you can get a free hit in. Now, Intimidation comes into play because most monsters attack too fast for you to pull that off regularly. 20-30% attack speed reduction - and suddenly it is quite manageable. I used health pots on odd ocasions I messed up, including our friend Vred I mentioned above. Weapon of choice - staff. Surprisingly, magician's is a better one (at least lowest level one). It has faster attack and quirky attack animation (used sometimes) which basically dishes out two strikes instead of one. Normal staff (which I went for, and requires a lot of Strength and some Dexterity) is actually fairly worse in performance. It has a few extremely slow winding attacks, which don't hit any harder than the other ones. But that aside, it has the same advantage - range. I am surpsised too, some weapons in this game do have different range. I'd guess that all Two-handed weapons share similar bonus, but didn't try that yet. Suffice to say, with kiting mentioned above, advantage in range allows you to get in 2-3 attacks instead of 1. And since we're not inclined on getting hit at all, we don't really care about absence of the shield. I think I'll continue on, at my own pace, and share my experience. If you're interested, of course.
@Legiro

Yeap, no way around tentacles aside from packing a ranged weapon. Up to this point it was more or less possible to do with just melee weapon. Pretty boring and tiresome, but possible. Tentacles attack from far away, long before you're in range even with staff/spear as a weapon. And their animation is too quick even with debuff from Intimidation. You just have to face tank and spend thousands on potions and repairs or grab a gun and start shooting. Not like you can't pack a ranged weapon with melee build, it seems that damage buffs from Offensive skill are enough to compensate for lack of higher tier weapon. But that kinda defeats the purpose of this, doesn't it? Armor does help quite noticeably to mitigate damage, once you get a heavier one. I could facetank tentacles, say... 4-5 times at least? Without leveling Vitality obviously. But repair costs rack up fast, even more so if you're using uncommon ones. I'd definitely say that ranged>>>melee in this game. Health Potions aren't a problem when you kite with melee, in fact I didn't have to buy them at all and had at least a dozen in surplus. The funny thing is, most of your money will be spent not on weapon, not on armor... but on rings. Yeah, pretty funny. Rings add to stats, which allows you to bypass restrictions you would normally have and pack a weapon that you shouldn't be able to equip yet. In line with that, rings with +5 to all stats or +10 to one stat cost an absurd amounts of money, well over 10 thousand. Compared to any common type weapon costing, say, ~1500 at the same stage of the game. And you don't really need all those uncommond fancy bonuses, maybe excluding attack speed buff. I'll even go as far as to say that you really don't want an uncommond armor or a weapon. The cost to repair them multiplies. And you need all the money you can get to buy Rings. Balancing was definitely not a first or second idea in developer's head.
@bruhSaintJohn
@bruhSaintJohn 8 жыл бұрын
I've started playing this game as well, on normal tho. Still pretty dam challenging Did you upgraded your weapons? I've upgraded the limb 1-7 to 3-9 points of damage and it is an absolute overkill. When upgrading, any kind of weapon will do. Making a better rifle? Feel free to add some blades and spears Also You can really save your money you spend on potions by quickly going back to lab and talking to alchemist guy. He'll heal you up for free. Risky, but works and saves lots of money.
@Legiro
@Legiro 8 жыл бұрын
ThePhirenor I've wrote a separate post about my experience. I don't think I'll be finishing the game, since it is pretty boring. But basically - you don't need to buy potions at all, if you kite properly with melee. Only ranged enemies require you spending potions, but might as well use ranged weapons against them, if it comes to that. Upgrading weapons does provide marginal stat improvement, but the meat of money expenditure definitely lies with rings. Instead of spending thousands on marginal upgrade to damage, you can buy a +5 all stats/+10 one stat ring and equip a higher tier weapon way before you would be able to (as in several levels before you would be able to). Ultimately, rings provide a lot more value in the long run, as long as you're buying the best ones. Not wonder they cost an exorbitant amounts of money compared to any common equipment. Still, slightly upgrading weapons doesn't hurt. So that's it. You spend money mostly on rings upgrading stats. Some on repairs, not that much if you don't use uncommon items. And you really shouldn't, the only usefull stats are attack speed buffs and such, but the cost for repairs ramps up way too high for what really is a commodity rather than necessity. And sometimes you need to buy new weapons/armor, because you didn't luck out on drop. But they don't cost all that much. To be honest, buying a new weapon is almost comparable to repairing your existing gear from 0 durability. To the point where I found it sometimes preferable to use something picked a little more before I can replace a weapon with a higher tier one, instead of repairing. Oh, and one measely stat point bonus for killing off every enemy on the map? Almost not worth it for the time spent checking every tree with your cursor. Then again, the game has so limited resources, that you need all the drop, experience and stat points you can get. Tedious gameplay, and you can't really skip on it without hindering your character progress.
@Legiro
@Legiro 8 жыл бұрын
The Mango Baron It is more or less the same in the unpatched version, I did try it out just to be sure. You simply need certain skills and weapons and it becomes possible to kite with melee weapons. Doesn't really matter, since in both versions you're hitting the wall of tentacles with the "melee only" run. At that point, you're more or less forced to use some sort of ranged attack. And I still find it hilarious that probably the best melee in the game is a Wizard weapon.

The poor difficulty balancing may seem unusual but in just 2019 Borderlands 3 was released with HALF of the campaign not being properly leveled to the player. Resulting in playing god mode and 1 hit killing every enemy because they are 15 levels below you. It took them over a YEAR to fix this and its apparently still broken. Game news sites were literally releasing articles along the lines of "Half the borderlands 3 campaign is no longer broken!" or from forbes: Borderlands 3 campaign broken on release date, still not fixed a year later. And this is a major AAA game. This proves to me that some video games are LITERALLY NOT PLAY TESTED in an ethical way. It took A YEAR for a lot of the games content to even be experienced in an enjoyable way without playing through the game twice to raise the difficulty. Entire multi-hour long gameplay sequences in a 2019 AAA multi million dollar game where you are 1 hitting every enemy and cant die. Also you literally get a legendary weapon drop every five minutes

Well... with the voice acting. We are talking about a country that to this day does dubbing by making one guy sit in studio and just translating whatever the characters say. There are few exceptions to this, but from what I saw on polish TV channels, almost all movies, serieses, cartoons and so on are dubbed by a signle guy talking over the movie, who sounds as if he was computer generated. Honestly it always drives me up the wall when I hear it. So... when I am playing a polish game... I already expect the voice acting will be all over the place. Luckily there are not many and those few that I have actually played were dubbed into my language by our actors. XD

About enemies raising other enemies - you might not like this mechanic, Ross, but there is a valid point to it. It makes the player get a bit more involved in order to "break the cycle" so the enemies stop getting up, and the best way to do this is by focusing on killing the enemy that's raising other enemies.
