Epic Quotes. "You hear triumphant music from the beginning, letting you know you can DO this. Now back to SPIDERBOT." "Open exploration and timers go together like bread and Motor Oil". "Are we even the good guy? What is ANY of this? SPIDERBOT" "YOu know how kids will just stare up at the stars and wonder what's out there?" "Spiderbot... THAT'S what's out there. Maybe I should have thought about if I wanted that question answered before I asked it, huh?" "I actually credit this game as the reason I don't do drugs. Not DARE, Not McGruff, NO. I never wanted to expand my mind that way because I already knew what I might find. More SPIDERBOT." The delivery on those sentences. God tier. I enjoyed every occasion upon which Ross layers emphasis on the name Spiderbot.
@TulipQ8 жыл бұрын
Spiderbot's abduction of the life forms is probably something more like the use of specialized tools than hunting. The one you give up to the god fist is a genetic key meant to only be used by spoderbots when the reactor needs maintenance, the one that lets you fly really high is a mini helicopter, etc. The reason they are organic is because organic components can automatically produce their own back ups in desirable quantities, if environmental conditions are stable. The problem is that the intelligence needed to do maintenance couldn't be given to the organics, since one of them might go insane at some point and damage the reactor. The system is remarkably stable until the last spiderbot fails, and seeing as you are that last spiderbot I guess the system is kinda near death. Not that it matters much, the humanoids which made the reactor haven't shown up to install more spiderbots in so long that it is safe to conclude they either died, regressed technologically, or abandoned the place with the reactor. Spiderbot!

OckhamAsylum Well, mindless might not be entirely accurate. Maybe the spiderbots have proper minds. But yeah, the fact you are the last one means that the humanoid creators have kinda given up on this facility and fixing it. If they really cared there would be more spiderbots coming. SPIDERBOT!

As a kid, I bought this at Babbage's for the Apple II because the box art looked cool and its empty promises were intriguing. My parents didn't like me having non-educational games, so this is one of the only action-adventure titles I had. I wasted entirely too much of my childhood on this game and had pretty much the same experience as you did, starting with spending 30 minutes figuring out how to jump. Somehow I was able to transform into the 2-legged spider without sacrifing the bladder bunny, but maybe I was playing the "short" game at the time. Now that you've shown the ending, I'm glad I didn't stick with it that long.

Wow... you know the phrase, 'the memories came flooding back'? That just happened to me in a remarkably strong way when I saw the thumbnail to this video. I played the DOS version of this game probably around the early 90s, but I genuinely hadn't thought of it at all in the last 20 years, or longer. And I think it's safe to say that without prompting I might never have thought of it again. But when I saw that thumbnail, I instantly remembered spending many, many hours trying to make my way through this game, and the feelings of frustration when I couldn't figure out what I was supposed to do, and the joy and satisfaction when I finally did. It really was like, 'Holy shit, I played that game! A lot! And I loved it!'

This game would go great with a graphics update and a bit of control overhaul. Touch things up, make it more responsive and streamline, but do little to nothing else. Obviously, a re-adjusted control scheme would mean messing around a bit with the platforms in the map, but if you could leave the rooms as similar to the source as you can (layout, ratio of plant to steel, the creatures). We can't mess around too much with Spiderbot. Just enough to bring it back to our world.

10:10 Your map of Spiderbot makes me think of one I have from online of Metroid 1 for FDS. The jungle rooms in the map screenshot look like they're from Brinstar and the metal areas look like the acid and lava filled metal rooms in most areas that usually contain missile tanks or energy tanks. A few of the upper metal rooms remind me of Tourian and I keep expecting to see Metroids themselves appear in some of the ones with blue pillars. God help Spiderbot's creators if Metroids or X Parasites were let loose in the citadel's electronic jungle, assuming they aren't extinct and the mysterious "citadel" area is just on borrowed time anyway.

On the one hand, humanity may still be alive, because it says in the story paragraph that "the only remaining spider droid has been sent", which would indicate it's being sent by a higher authority. But it doesn't say what that authority is, so it could still be an A.I., and why is there only one remaining spider droid? That would indicate some sort of destructive event, so the story actually makes the apocalyptic theory sound vaguely plausible. There were more spider droids? What happened to them, and why? What was their original purpose? Why can't humanity build more? Maybe it's because there's no one left to build them, or they no longer possess the resources or knowledge to do so. The story talks about chemical reactors that will devastate their surroundings upon meltdown; maybe the events of this game are just an addendum to a larger breakdown; all across the world humanity's chemical reactors were going critical and only these spider droids were capable of getting past the security drones and disabling them in time. Valiant efforts by these droids to stop the reactors slowly whittled down their numbers, until only one is left. Now another reactor is about to fail, and if the spider droid fails this time there will be no way to stop the reactors in the future in the event of another meltdown (which there almost certainly will be). Basically it's the plot of Pacific Rim, but instead of kaiju you have chemical reactors, and instead of jaegers you have SPIDERBOT!
