Chuck's plane looks like an impression of a Douglas DC-2 or DC-3. Either way you're flying in the 1930s. No way it's after the Second World War if he's (presumably) American and flying over Romania. Also, it looks like he's flying without a headset on, which is insane. Making the instruments go crazy was a bad call from Dracula. So long as the magnetos keep chugging a DC-3 just simply never stops working. Chuck's gonna be flying by instruments, though, since it's dark outside, so maybe if Dracula kept up the effort Chuck would've crashed after five or ten minutes. Actually, kamikaze bats into the windscreen isn't such a good idea. So long as they don't shatter the glass and incapacitate Chuck, which they don't seem to do, then Chuck should be able to just keep on reading his instruments to navigate all the way to his destination without needing to look out of the window once. But that does also rely on having a navigator and a copilot to help zero in on non-directional beacons, and Chuck seems to be going solo, and without his headset on. It's all pretty weird. He's flying a big ship at night in a remote place without his headset on or any other crew. I think Chuck might actually be a plane jacker, or maybe he's gone AWOL from a military assignment in the Med, so he decided to gun it east in a stolen plane til sunrise. Either way, Chuck's not too smart.

That vampire death scene was actually incredible
@tommcewan79364 жыл бұрын
Well, as Ross points out in the video, they're kinda supposed to be! If you're doing a vampire piece and you don't get THAT scene right... it'd be about as bad as doing a werewolf flick and having a lame transformation scene that barely even looks painful or terribly inconvenient, let alone where there's a horrific loss of humanity as a person devolves into a savage beast (the werewolf scene in this very game, for example, actually looks pretty perfunctory and kind of a let-down), or doing a Frankenstein flick and having the mad scientist *not* completely lose his shit upon realising he is the first mortal to successfully create life (although I suppose you could, with extreme care, put a neat twist on it if you went to the other extreme and the mad scientist were totally, creepily dispassionate about it...). Really, I think pretty much every "genre movie" (and definitely every exploitation movie) typically has one*, pivotal scene that, deep down in the bone, every cinema audience member knows, "THIS is what you bought your ticket to see." And every director worth his or her salt knows, during production, "we HAVE to have this, or it Just Won't Work." Some are easier to spot than others; finally beholding the queen in Aliens, for example, or the first visit to the Harkonnen home-world in David Lynch's Dune. Others are more subtle; in the original Alien, apparently it is generally held to be the infamously over-budget "space jockey" setpiece. *Sometimes several, but usually the others seem to be secondary to The Big One; sometimes they're even feints to throw the audience off-track.

I think that whole sequence, while a little basic, is one of the best ending sequences in an RPG I've seen. They really captured the feeling of "I outsmarted a god" considering the limitations at the time.

Regarding MT-32 music at 19:16, fear not, Ross! It's actually fairly easy to emulate the MT-32 quite well, it's just that the MT-32 emulation that comes with Dosbox is awful. Instead, you'll need to use MUNT, which is an external MT-32 driver that just about perfectly emulates the real deal. You'll need to find an official MT-32 ROM file on the web, do a bit of setup for Dosbox to recognize it (or use a community build of Dosbox with support already baked in), and you're good to go! There are some good video tutorials on how to set it up here on KZbin.

@MinecraftMartin Жыл бұрын
@@clyax113 Just logic, and reading other dialog. You got a gun but no bullets, its not a big leap to consider typing in "bullets" with certain npcs. Amd you know you need a silver bullet to kill the werewolf, I think another NPC even mentions it. So there's a silver smith in the game, you know you need silver bullets ... just put two and two together. What Ross doesn't show in the video is that there IS mention of these hints. Like asking for a light, so you can ignite the lantern. The guy who gives you the light tells you it doesn't make sense to give you a light because matches are rare and you don't even have a pipe to use it with. So the game is telling you to find a pipe. I might be mixing up some details, but it's definitely all in the game. You just have to pay attention to the hints from talking to everyone. It's pretty fun if you like that sort of puzzle

I don't think anybody would casually fly over Romania during WW2 and the 202 was introduced in 1947, so that would check out. The different fuselage shape might be an artistic choice to avoid straight lines. Of course there were much more aircraft manufacturers around back then, so it could be yet another airplane. This game actually has some pretty innovative mechanics, like how you type in what you want to say to people (albeit it being cryptic at times about what you need to say), the way you dual wield not only weapons, but items as well to perform certain tasks, and the "prophecy meter" is good at telling the player, whether they are actually doing progress. This game was ahead of its time, even though it had its fair share of the usual bullshit present in other games of the same era.
@pavlotverdokhlib76273 жыл бұрын
Typing stuff in was an old CRPG trope. Ultima games have been doing it since the 80s. Dual-wielding items to combine them is pretty cool concept. SSI had a bunch of their old games hit GOG recently. Hoping this one makes it as well.

I had this game back in 94, and i loved it back then. My parents didn't care much for video games so i was mostly on my own getting them. So being like 14, in a small suburban town. It was either get copies of games from friends or try my luck with bargain bins at radio shack. Anyway this is one of the games i found, and i didn't have much to go on other than the box, i just knew i liked adventure games. It turned out to be somewhat of a favorite. The other game i found, which i really liked. Was Amazon Guardians of Eden. It stood out from the others because they had hints and made sure you were able to get through the game. Because without internet or walkthroughs you always got stuck. And with Veil of Darkness, i didn't actually beat the game until around 2006 or 07. I found it, redownloaded it, and finally saw the end.

@@derealized797 Never seen someone with as-similar of a childhood as you. I didn't have my own console until about 1995. Until then I was playing whatever I could get my hands on that would install on my mom's computer. Honestly the bargain baskets with obscure PC games were a lot of fun to rummage through. I got Veil of Darkness for five dollars at ... Home Depot? Was some kind of store like that, I remeember they had no business selling PC games, so this big bin of cheap PC games was very out of place. There's a few other games I got from there, but I can't for the life of me remember what they were called. Veil of Darkness was probably the best find out of those few years of rummaging. After I got an SNES and then PS1, kind of slowed down on PC gaming for better or worse. Anyway yeah getting through this game without internet guides as a 11 - 12 year old ... it took me a very long time to crawl my way to the end. Did beat it though eventually. One of the best endings in a game to date, personally.

Yeah, nothing suspicious there, I'm totally sure Seth came by the goblet honestly, and he absolutely doesn't have a basement full of dead monks who turned up looking for it.
