Actually, the dining rooms look similar because that style of dining room was incredibly common in Medieval English castles/mansions, so it’s accurate to period architecture. It was a long, narrow room on the side of the castle so the windows could let in natural, with a fireplace. It was long so they could entertain a lot of guests, and when there were a lot of them, the guests would also sleep in there.

As a fellow soundtrack enthusiast (for lack of a lesser word), I can tell you what makes this soundtrack stand out to me: each note is crisp and each tune is simple. He let the music have some... depth to it; none of the notes sound flat. He picked a single instrument that fit the moment, then used other instruments to emphasize it sparingly. Nowadays, most of what I hear seems to be composed by Yertle. This notion hit me immediately, so perhaps this is how you felt?
@Brunosky_Inc6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that's exactly the thing. Too many orchestrated soundtracks don't try to create the kind of catchy base melodies that make songs become memorable, instead turning them into mushy background sound. While not at all similar to the style used in this game's themes, the perfect examples of using melody effectively on an orchestral game soundtrack that come to mind are the Super Mario Galaxy duology. Songs like Gusty Garden Galaxy, Fluffy Bluff Galaxy, and Bowser's Galaxy Generator know how to make use of a great base melody around which to build the orchestral track.
@shemsuhor8763 Жыл бұрын
Yep. These pieces are few notes and chords, and then accentuation of them. They aren't SUPER BUSY and EPIC like most music tries to be now.

This game reminds me of my family. We are a family cursed by a witch back in the 1600's, and the first and last child were doomed to poverty and famine. All of the generations of the first and last child have been farmers, and most of them lived and died on the farm they were at. Thankfully, I'm a middle child, so I don't have to deal with all that curse nonsense. Thanks for the great video, Ross!
@mackerelphones6 жыл бұрын
Your siblings may want to invest in some crucifixes, or cold iron.
@IdentityChrist6 жыл бұрын
Like, this curse is pretty great. If you plan on having 2 or less kids, you'll end up with less people in your lineage than before. That's why you need to have AT LEAST 4 kids to make it out even, and in modern society it's pretty difficult. Also, the cursed ones know they're cursed and might try something messed up, like a sibling rivalry of death.
@the_brutal_king43146 жыл бұрын
@A Riter I might have kids. In all honesty, save but few believed in the curse and a lot of them were angry about it near the end, regretful that they didn't try. Not a lot is known about how to break the curse, really. If my great-grandmother's word prove correct, it was that my English side's great-great-great-great grandfather had seduced and had the witch bear children. Then, later on (about 5 years), he had seduced another woman, and decided to live with her instead. The witch then cursed the family, and was never seen nor heard of again. Thus began our life of poverty. Nobody in the family has any idea how to break the curse, but if involves grave-digging, finding skeletons and opening a hell portal, count me out. @MC Malzahar There are stories in our family where if the firstborn is still-borne then it was a bit of a relief, much to the dismay of the mother and if she knew. I don't know if anyone had tried to kill each other out right, though. It's stuff that you really don't dig down into, especially since historical evidence is little to none on the topic. Hearsay is really the only way to figure it out.

Believe it or not - this is actually an old childhood favorite of mine. I found the demo on some pc gaming magazine here in germany and bothered my parents to buy the game for me, which they reluctantly did. Good that they never found out how dark and gruesome it gets. This game both kickstarted my love for Adventure games AND for gothic horror. Like no other game I have ever played this encapsulates gothic horror, in style, in music and in narrative. Old gothic horror always had aristocrats exploring old mansions and uncovering a lineage of spooky stuff and curses as well as murder mysteries. So yeah - great game, influenced my taste, the music gives me shiver - great video. Thanks for covering this gem.

From what I've heard about the original Greek/Roman statues is that they didn't actually look like a grade schoolers coloring book. The ancients clearly had some understanding of shading, and the "recoloring" didnt take that into account.
@tvdvd86612 жыл бұрын
They probably understood light better then we do. Since we have light all the time and back then they wouldnt have been able to illuminate entire rooms as thoroughly as we can. We basically kill all the details with light that they would've been paying attention to

Ross's comment about being disappointed in unusual-crime stories like Sherlock Holmes and Scooby Doo, where the villain turns out to be just some schmuck with a plan or a costume, resonates with me so much. I mean, I get why long-running stories like those _don't_ go the world-altering route, since it would mean they'd have to do a lot more work planning out each entry in the series instead of taking it one adventure at a time. Still, damn is it a satisfying payoff when you learn just how weird the protomolecule is in the otherwise hard-sci-fi Expanse, or how Cobra Commander was actually an emissary of an ancient reptilian race that has been waiting to reconquer the world from humanity since the ice ages. That said, I think I understand why that sort of thing turns a lot of people off. There's definitely a lot of technique involved in getting it right. The twist should be surprising but not jarring, and as Ross observes, it shouldn't just seem like an ass-pull at the last minute. You need a light touch to lay out just enough clues, but not so light that people don't notice them, _and_ you need to have enough of the story left to get into the new plot twist once the characters find themselves in the middle of it. Cabin in the Woods got it right. Uncanny Valley didn't quite manage it.
@notinspectorgadget Жыл бұрын
I think it's underutilization is a good thing for two reasons. One - it's as you said, very difficult to pull off satisfactorily. Two - it doesn't make the reveal trite.

Honestly, having completed the game myself, I'm inclined to say that the original plan was for there to be a confrontation with Mordred, or maybe with somebody possessed by him trying to bring him back. The "twist" that Samuel is the killer is obvious ten miles away if you use basic logic and follow the process of elimination, and it strikes me as a last minute cop-out that they threw in when they realized they were running out of time, money, or both, but it was too late in development to change everything that was building up to the original ending. The plot point that the murder victims are being drained of blood, and the runes being found at each murder, all seem to be building up to a grand reveal that some terrible design is playing out, but both of them get dropped. There's a big Dracula throne in the ritual chamber for no clear reason. There's physically no way Samuel could have been the one to kill Grandpa - there's no indications that the Curse makes him able to do things like scale a steep stone tower during a heavy thunderstorm, and it's obvious he was nowhere near Black Mirror at the time of the murder, something the game never addresses. If I remember right the game claims it just possessed him and made him commit suicide, but that's absolutely ridiculous - you can very clearly see he's being thrown out of the tower in the introduction.
@jacob4189 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, and it’s weird that the curse would have just suddenly possessed grandpa even though he had lived in the castle his entire life. Just doesn’t make any sense.

I actually used that for a villain whose power was pixelating people and things.. used it to hide her identity, pixelated peoples' junk just for lulz, then later (when I learned how to draw it) summoned minecrafty pixel weapons. Personally I agree that the first game was my favorite, but that doesn't mean 2 and 3 aren't worth playing. The ending to 1 seemed fitting to me, since it wasn't just a preventative measure for Samuel. 2 has such a jarring start compared to the first and I urge anyone to just hold on, since both 2 and 3 add to the lore and has some genuine great moments.

43:13 I like it when reality breaks down too, but I also like it when everything is the result of a really clever plan... And I mean legitimately clever, not just convoluted. So I like it best when the core is something supernatural, but the mechanisms working around it are pure genius.
