Stunning! In the beginning of learning Drums i had to learn to play to sheets. But i allways hated it and i had a lot of fights with my brain! 😂 In the (40) years after i forgot everything and just the last past month i came back to learn and understand sheets! Hey Ross! (Incoming "essay"...if you have the time to read it) I wanted to truly thank you for making this video about reading sheet music for the Cajon. Since I started playing the Cajon, I have gotten in the habit of just playing random grooves or fills from memory (without using any written or visual notation). If I did use any form of sheet music at any time, it would be during watching one of your videos with the sheet music. After watching your video, I decided to use the website, Groove Scribe, that you recommended to us. After practicing 3 or so basic hip hop / funky grooves that I always use, I felt so different compared to blindly practicing with no sheet music reference. I was able to look at the sheet music and listen to how it sounds at the same time while the Groove Scribe's metronome was clicking in perfect time along with it. I was also playing those grooves at the same time on my Cajon while this was all happening. I felt so creative and almost like an expert Cajon player (because I was so astonished at how helpful Groove Scribe's features were) even though I only have a year and a half of experience playing the Cajon. I even randomly started to use the SIDES of the Cajon... which I NEVER use!! It offers a great conga-like sound that I can't wait to practice more! Also, I have this project for one of the music classes I'm taking in college, and we have to compose our own melody in the form of sheet music (with measures, notations, etc..). My professor was kind enough to allow me to do a Cajon SOLO in place of a musical piece or melodic line of notes, and I am super excited for that! Instead of having different notes, I just need to write the notes in rhythmic form and label the different parts of the Cajon that I am using, as well as techniques that I used. I am going to perform for the whole class, which is a little nerve-wracking, yet exciting at the same time! Anyway, my point is, thank you for teaching us Cajon players a super important skill when it comes to learning music: listening isn't everything, but visuals plus listening equals a massive amount of improvement and learning! Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to read this "essay" (if you get to it). I hope you keep improving to be the best Cajon player you can be! :) - JD Allen

This video is worth its weight in gold👌 Until now, understanding time signature was something i viewed as an advanced skill... And it would clog my brain. Ty for breaking down the reference of the top and bottom number. (*huge sigh of relief) So, if this was a legend on a map: The top number (counted as whole notes) is the distance traveled before we loop back to the beginning to repeat. The bottom number is the speed or tempo. Indicating how fast each step you take must take. And the notes on a bar are describing what steps to take (snare, kick, etc)

Your 100% welcome! Yeah I like your way of putting it too. Only thing is the bottom number does indeed tell you how fast to count but not the tempo. The tempo is independent of time signature. I hope that makes sense.

Glad I could help you out with some of this stuff. Hi hats are written at the top line with “X”s. And toms go on the lines we didn’t talk about here with just the usual dots. Higher toms up higher and lower toms lower.

I play guitar and if I am using strumming as D UDUD UDU pattern then which 4/4 groove I can use in cajon and what will be its notation... if somehow I can crack this my life will be easy.. please assist ... the reference song is “ritviz Jeet” ... song is in 16 beats and pattern I wrote is in 16 beats

Mario Rondón good question! If you wanted to switch between different subdivisions then changing time signature affects the length of the bar and probably wouldn’t be so easy to follow while reading or playing.

In which case, it’s totally cross-platform (just search “Groove Scribe” into Google). I used Logic Pro on my Mac in the second part of the video but you can do just about everything you need on Groove Scribe.

@@ankalbag maybe FL studio or Ableton are some famous examples. Writing the notation with them may not be possible though. A famous one for notation is Sibelius but I think it’s pricey.

Absolutely! The tricky thing is when you have too many simultaneous hits (with drums you can have both hands and both feet on one note). On cajon you’ve usually got to play bass with a hand instead of a foot, so you will have less layers. Does that make sense?

I've always been confused with 5/4, 5/8 or something like that lol. When u play separately it's easier to pick out which one is, but in a music piece (specifically some complex ones), meh xD Btw i suck at reading music too, just like u, i dont have theories or knowledge in the very first time about sheet music, just a completely new person to music trying to be better.
