It is so sad, Hakko was great until they hired some famous designer jerkoff to redo all their products look and feel and trashed absolutely EVERYTHING. Then When everyone complained, instead of taking the feedback, corporate doubled down on their retardation, and their marketshare has been slipping ever since. I don't know anyone who buys Hakko products anymore, when they used to be the industry standard. The FX-888 was one of the best soldering stations ever made, and it did everything it needed to do: had a knob to change the temperature and a light to tell you when it was on.

Yeah. When I got that email in 2017 from the marketing wank saying I was doing a disservice to my audience by not showing them the FR-810 I knew it was over. That was a relationship I had to start mourning, a company that would say something that ballsy about a piece of equipment that bad was a company that lost any hope of producing good products again.

Thanks, I'm not crazy, I read a lot of peoples saying they prefer the FX-888D over the FX-888 and I thought the FX-888 was better (in usability). Anyway, this comment was about (I don't remember if this is Louis or Dave John, but I think this is Dave) the fact the FX-888 was an old technology soldier iron (my memory suck but TLDR it was about the heating element core) and there are (for about the same price) better than the FX-888. As a noob in electronic, I'm still wayyyyyyyy happy to have the FX-888 VS the cheap one-temperature soldering iron. (it heat really fast as well!)

I love the quick, but I'm impressed with the performance of the Atten. I suppose the next thing to look at is longevity for regular use. As long as the Atten does not eat up heating elements or break down then it's solid in my opinion.

Will definitely look at this one day if I find myself needing to upgrade. For now the basic Quick 857DW+ is working nicely. No settings storage, just two knobs, and changing nozzles requires a screwdriver, but it gets hot pretty quickly, cools down when the handle is put into its holder and does the job. Plus it was less than half the price of the 861DW.

Ordered my first ever hot air station from Amazon which was a Yihua... which self destructed the first time I turned the hot air on (went bright orange it got soo hot before tripping the breakers). That got sent back. Then got an Atten and that was weaker than a limp noodle. That went back too. Then I got my Quick 861DW. Still using it to this day. Lovely bit of kit. I really should get a bunch of spares in while they are still available.

Hi Louis, Great review and straight to the point, Ive always steared away from Atten but that station looks pretty cool. One thing though I use the Quick 861DW, Ive had it for a couple of years now and always seemed to do the job but recently i noticed things were taking a little too long to remove from boards, so i read the destructables and found i could calibrate the quick. after testing the temp with a heat probe at 300 (low) it only gave out 267 degrees C and High 500 Degrees it gave out 468 degrees. so after calibration (in the manual :-) it now gives out the correct temps again.. is yours calibrated correctly?.... just a thought. keep up the great work and STAY SAFE

REWRITTEN: FORMATTED CORRECTED TEXT I found that I could calibrate the QUICK. After testing the temp with a heat probe at 300 (low) it only produced 267 degrees C and High 500 Degrees it produced 468 Degrees. So after calibration ( described in the manual ) it now produces the correct temperature again.

Hi Louis, I am a Hot Air newbie owning a Quick 861dw now. Although my first experience went quite well with soldering some smt parts using 300C and airflow set to 20, I would like to know if you have some basic recommendations for temp/airflow settings for the Quick covering different scenarios, eg. soldering (paste with lead), de-soldering etc. In general, would you prefer to use higher temperature and try to (de-)solder as quick as possible, or take some more seconds with less temp?

You'll still be able to raise and lower the temp and speed, but no heat will come out. IT IS NOT BROKEN!!! I thought my heating element had failed, but it's just that button on the handpiece. You may need to measure the outer diameter to find specific ones, but the nice thing is you can use the universal nozzles that have an adjustable clamp to fit a range. I'd guess once you got them sized, a bit of high temp thread lock would keep them from changing adjustment. The sets of those are suitable cheap off the same sites that sell the 862D.It looked like there were some sort of indents on the outer diameter of the 862, I wonder if they did that specifically to avoid some sort of patent Quick might have. It might be possible to undo that and then use the Quick nozzles. Considering the under $200 price of the Atten. 5 minutes with a Dremel or drill to be able to use the easily available Quick nozzles would be totally worth the savings. It's not like you're ever going to service the thing anyway.

I was mainly curious if you ever pre heat your MacBook boards?

As of today, yes Atten has bent nozzles. At AliExpress, they call it _"ATTEN ST-862D 45 Degree Bent Curved Nozzle"._ The angle is 45deg. and you can select from three different diameters, the same you mentioned they've made for you: 6.4mm, 8.7mm and 12.7mm. It costs 8 dollars USD. Btw, the business dynamic you depict at the end is so true! It's like a couple: the moment one loses respect for the other, taking him/her for granted, the relation goes down the drain and eventually to a divorce.

For me OKI METCAL HCT-900-21 230v EU Version (HCT-900-11 115v) is what I use with analogue control and parts are still available considering the unit is old. Heat is very constant and the handle by far the smallest and ergonomic. However only downside Metcal is you have to manually turn down temp when resting on stand. 😊👍

You can buy from a rainforest website 7, 9 or 13mm 45deg nozzles for the atten.

Had to borrow a HaKo from adjacent dept at uni. took an 1.5 hours to read and understand the manual to get it set up, at which point i needed to shut it all down to cool off before I went home.

Be consistent and don't take things or others for granted or be ready to lose them. Got it. Thanks for the comparison review. Are you by any chance getting that X-Ray tool you told us about last year? That would definitely be nice to see being used in action.

Given that the one thing I treated the company to in 8 years is moving to a slightly nicer store and I managed to time this expensive move right as a global pandemic was spreading that caused the greatest economic destruction in history, I am postponing any pipe dreams of owning a $150,000 x-ray machine.

I don't think I will ever need anything quite like this for the odd jobs I do but it's tempting nonetheless - thanks for the review. They are on sale in the Netherlands via Atten with shipment to the UK for around 215 Euros - early Christmas present to myself maybe ;) :D

so, would you say that the atten comes preinstalled with "Rapid Cool Technology: LITE"?

Louis have you considered the best 863? Looks like a quick but with a touch screen (ewww). But has a stand like the quick (best 861 doesn't, just has a little holder on the side) and is supposed to be 1300w and I think the temperature is a bit higher as well.

Does cutting a slit in side of hakko bent nozzle with Dremel wheel make existing bent nozzle fit or do they start sliding off during use or something?

You can see the inside on the Atten website but still gonna need louis's input. If he's calm must be alright but if he turns into a rabid dog you've been warned.

Can a temperature/ air flow be selected and set with the handle set in the stand? Not a preset using one of channel buttons. Is there an ac filter installed in the station to prevent the effects of the switching

My cars electronics have been breaking steadily as the damn thing gets older, I ripped mine apart recently to find out what one of those issues was. It was a circuit board that I guess Ford doesn't manufacture anymore so I had to repair it instead. Brought out the hakko 951 and resoldered all the joints, it works again! The Atten or Quick is next on my buy list.

Making this comment as a paceholder. When I get home I'm gonna see what model I have. I bought some cheap $68 hot air station that had an attached soldering iron. This thing has worked AMAZINGLY I bought it a Fry's of all places. Actual knobs for air and temp, as well as on the iron. Each has its own display for temp. It stays where I set it every time. That thing has been transported to jobs. slammed around in my trunk for months. I've been using it for years. Will update later.
