This was the best moment for me in the anime . He took so many people life as they were nothing less then animals but in a single moment when he could imagine the taste of the sugar while seeing the other person drinking it actually raised the emotion that he was Missing the whole time and that was empathy. And I wanted this to be theme till the end that monsters and humans could be shaped from a single moment which the show actually delivered.

He says right after that : "Killing is easy when you dont know the taste of sugar" Meaning that killing is easy when theres nothing in the other person you can identify in yourself. As long as we remain different from one another, theres nothing wrong in killing one another. But to think i can taste the sugar same as the other did, means i can feel too, so he can. On another level, the atoms of my body are the same as his atoms and the whole existence, same structure, same capability, we can all feel, we are all brothers in The end, made the same way. The only thing that creates a illusion of difference and segregation is our own beliefs about the world.

Monster is such an great anime, I am not saying because of the hype(which is by the way real) but because it shows both the evil and the good it shows both. Every character has depth. It just shows both aspects of life. Most people has labelled this anime as a dark side of humanity but they have forgotten the light of this anime. The good in people's heart exist and they are empathetic. At the end its our own choice to choose between the vice and virtue. We should make our choices not under the influences of religions(which offers you optimistic ideas) but because there is kindness in your heart. We should tell us truth that we are kind not because someone has taught us but becausee this is how we are. But we cannot forget that evil exists too , so questionyourself what you are. Are you good or are you evil or you lie in grey zone . But never forget there is kindness in your heart you are kind not because you want a reward for it but because you are kind this is your nature

In Monster, the character Wolfgang Grimmer mentions that "to kill someone, you must forget the taste of sugar" to underline the loss of humanity and sensitivity required to commit an act as extreme as murder. Sugar represents the sweet and pleasant in life, so forgetting its taste symbolizes losing the ability to experience pleasure and empathy, necessary conditions for carrying out such a dehumanizing act.

It's one of the most consistently praised anime out there. If you think it's good, just say it is. People keep using "underrated" on popular stuff.

Crazy seeing people in comments not understanding the sugar thing... The killer and the victim both take 6 spoons of sugar for the coffee. A very unique and odd thing to do. That day the killer realized that people aren't "faceless" jobs to finish: They all have thoughts, souls and weird quirks. Just like himself.

Notice how he kept calling the person "it", but changed to "he" after the coffee realization. That's GOOD writing.

I read this manga a long time ago, maybe since high school. It was quite confusing to me at the time, but I still knew enough to know that this was a great series.( I read it straight to the end because it's too exciting)

This scene and another from the same episode were my favorite in the entire anime and they really stuck with me. I'm going off memory so bare with me but he becomes moved to tears watching a sad scene in a movie and says something along the lines of "If only I had found something like this (the movie) sooner". He grieves for the people that could have been spared had he learned empathy earlier in life.

context: the sniper also has a habit of putting in five spoonfuls of sugar into his coffee, so when he saw another man doing the same thing, empathy and guilt flooded his mind

This is actually kinda relatable. When I was younger I disassociated myself with others and hated people for no reason. One day I saw somebody eating a chocolate muffin at an airport, and for some reason that’s snapped me out my phase

I love how it's not even seeing some emotional moment of humanity that causes him to stop, just his target drinking coffee
@tacchin0s4 ай бұрын
The reason is because Rosso didn't have any empathy, in fact he says "waiting to kill some faceless guy" the reason Rosso stopped it's because seeing someone with his same habit of putting 5 spoonfuls of sugar he realized that the pepole he killed are just like him.

I love how he probably always killed people doing nothing important or relevant to him, making him easy to lack of empathy. But when he sees someone enjoying something simple and beatiful as coffe and sugar. He starts to notice these people actually do live and can have joy, just like him, but he didn't know that until now.
