I've recently bought a smaller Chicago Hardy, and another one called Italian Red that was originally brought over from Italy and stayed within their family. Watching videos to learn. I live in grow area 6a. So I will transplant them into a larger pot and bring them into a sheltered area during the winter.

I still have it. It's my favorite. I keep the breba crop on it, but its just a bonus. Not much comes from it. The main season figs have better productivity. I keep mine in a half wine barrel. Otherwise it would pop up everywhere around my house. My city has a ton of random fig trees that spread themselves by rizome.

I’ve grown VDB commercially since late 80s. and 30 other varieties in many regions of the country. VDB It’s not a good one for cool summer regions and often won’t ripen in regions with short or cool summers. Glad it works there. Sounds like a good one for your region and other long sumner areas with heat units over 3500-3700

Ross!! Hey.. just ordered my 1st fig trees ever and wanted to get them from YOU because of your awesome content!! Your Nero 600m & a Ronde de Bordeaux off FigBid!!! Question.. I thought the Nero 600m WAS a Violetta de Bordeaux, but I guess it’s just super similar?? Other presenters videos have said it’s almost identical, produces earlier & later as well even after frost.. and is more cold hardy. I’m still super stoked, but would love to hear your opinion on the differences. I live in Tulsa, Ok 7A. Excited that the RdB is early too & I think produces later than VdB as well?? Any of your opinions on these purchases would be SO appreciated.. also, our Oklahoma weather suuuuucks. It’s super hot & humid, then goes to super cold. Lots of back & forth, August rains.. muggy, sweaty, cold & slushy. Gonna put them on the South side of my house.. and REALLY want to prune them to look like regular neighborhood trees. Advice on if these two options can even do that? Not a lot of videos on older trees. I saw a Desert King pruning video of a guy out of country, it’s raised up a few feet, splits in 3 branches & each branch has 3 more branches coming from it.. you familiar? I love that the trees I’m getting from you look like saplings & not grown from cuttings to achieve that traditional tree look. How long do I have to keep them potted before planting in-ground? What should my 3rd 4th & 5th fig trees be? I’m thinking Black Celeste, Campanaire & Azores Black.. but maybe I should go with something to broaden the variety like an Olympian but I heard you dissing them in another video about maybe their lack of production.. Aside from persimmons.. what other outdoor edibles would you suggest? Thanks for the wisdom, there’s not a lot of info out there for us Okies besides to just get a Brown Turkey fig.. but I know we can do better!! Oklahoma needs our own video from the Fig Boss himself.. 🙏🏼 Thanks again, keep up the good work!! 😝

If you have the figs in pots, i guess the soil in the pots is going to wear out after a while. How often do you repot? Do you have a strategy for repotting?
@liansmallman4025

It’s said that fig tree should have roots restricted, eg like grow in pot to produce more figs. Put on ground they will focus more on vegetation grow instead of fruit production. Maybe that why the ones on the ground grow bigger but less fruits.

I just had my first VdB today. I was going to toss it because I have not had any luck compared to the other 30 varieties I have. The tree is under a year old. Maybe it's me, but the texture was like a juicy stone fruit (nectarine/peach) - not taste. It's a keeper.

Haha you can grow one and bring it inside when Temps get below about 20 . These cactus can take some serious cold . But yeah I got a VDB and 2 little miss figgy which are what I understand to be even smaller dwarf versions of VDB

Hey Ross. I’ve been watching your channel now for many months this year. I bought my first Chicago Hardy figs this spring. I must admit, they’re strange. They grew to almost six feet in 15 gallon containers in less then 3 months without branching. I pinched the tops two weeks ago and now I’m getting branches. I’ve got fruits all over them but given the timeframe I doubt they’ll ripen in time. I live in NY. My question, should I cut the main stem just above the highest scaffold? FYI, lignification has started and is up about one third of the way. If I should cut, when would be the best time? As of this weekend, I think I’ve decided to stop my fertilizing routine and I’ve cut back the watering as per your advice. It’s just curious to me how mine are so very tall and straight and yours seem to be much lower and forked.
