Government had zero to do with it, it was GM execs who shafted Holden. Holden was finished as soon as the financial crisis hit in 08, GM was bailed out by Obama but only for the US operations so GM secretly made deals with China for money , china later doubled crossed them and the greedy GM execs only after their money and bonuses were too stupid too see it. GMs plan was to make rebadged Daewoos as Holdens in South korea and send them to Australia. But the chinese government only wanted to steal GMs EV tech then folded the whole joint operation after that. No Holden or GM Korea anymore.

I always thought the Aussie Ute's would potentially sell well in the USA but they never brought them there. I guess they had their market sorted with pickup trucks and Mustang/Camaro, both Ford and Chevy didn't want to upset their selling model.

These would be considered captive imports and shouldnt be caught into the chicken tax since Holden was owned by GM and the same would apply to the falcon Ute's if they where shipped over. So they where technically a semi domestic car so they aren't a foreign competitor in the typical sense.

The ute platform wasn't appreciably lighter in the rear end than the sedans. That's a myth. Wheelspin here is simply traction off and 740Nm of torque on!

Thank you Ross for the Holden HSV review. We almost got the UTE. The UTE was supposed to come to the United States as Pontiac G8 ST. It was set and ready to happen. When they started producing the G8 sedan( Commodore) they decided not to bring the UTE. We got the Commodore and Caprice. We all wish Holden was still here. It was suspended : The G8, a rebadged Holden Commodore, was released in early 2008 for the 2008 model year in the United States, and in 2008 for the 2009 model year in Canada. Production stopped in mid-2009, following the GM decision to suspend the Pontiac brand. The made the decision not to bring the sports truck here to the United States before the G8 sedan came here in 2008.

Yummy. Such a shame Holden has gone, in the UK we lost so many names in the motor industry. I see MGs on the road and it angers me, they are made in China AI designed value engineered cars that carry a badge that was part of our motor heritage, most of the people driving one don't even know what the MG stands for. The damage of closure is far reaching, it hurts the local and national economy as jobs are lost and imports flood in, the lack of jobs creates problems that ultimately cost tax payers money, as well as damaging families and causing mental health and well being problems for former workers. Why our respective governments seem to do little or nothing to protect jobs, brands and iconic products that people are proud of making and others aspire to own eludes me. Rant over, love the review Jonno and it does sound good, bet early on a crisp morning it would be addictive. Thanks mate. 👍

@RossReviewsau The GTSR was originally released in 1996. The 2017 VF GTSR was a 30th anniversary tribute and goodbye salute to the brand. I would emplor you to try and get a W1 GTSR on the show. Very different car to the GTSR. Whole other level again. As a Ford man myself, nothing made in this country ever came close to it.

We did have the numbers. The problem was manufacturing and price of doing what they’ve done the way they done. It cost them more than it cost people to buy the car which is why it’s cheaper to send a Commodore back to the states to have it Reined at any age is cheaper than to keep it here in Australia send it Over Seas and bring it back. It’s a GM modified Car.

Commodores and falcons worked when people worked for a boss and turned up in a nice car and drove the company truck that did a good job of transporting heavy things.
