Good to see someone taking up the fight. I've lived in Melbourne most of my life, and all you do when you drive down here is make sure you're under the speed limit. No idea where you're going or what's going on around you, just make sure you're not speeding. Between watching my speed and watching for potholes, it's a bloody miracle anyone survives down here. Should be mandatory to do a course in driving instruction before you even get your Ls, learning important shit like centre of gravity in an SUV vs sedan/hatchback, FWD vs RWD, why bald tyres are bad, braking distances, why it's bad to push your car beyond its limits of grip etc. Important stuff that will actually save your life, instead of just headchecks, parallel parking, and 120 hours.

In Melbourne there are full time 40km zones and 20km changes on major thoroughfares with cameras, and if you turn onto those streets from a 60-70km zone, you may have one sign to sight on the apex of the bend before the camera. With low speeds, it can be easy to be well over without a chance to know the speed.

Perths biggest joke - 70k speed limit on stock road reduced from 80, then you have that section around naval base where its 90 on one side and 80 on the other. I went on a motorcycle trip to the UK for a month and it was a massive eye opener to the speed limit discussion and the standard of driving. On single lane roads the national speed limit was 60mph and on motorways its 70mph. Their lane discipline was night and day compared to Australia, people would see me coming up ages away and would make an actual effort to get out of the way. Then when I travelled over to the Isle of Man, they don't even have speed limits when you leave the towns. I was chasing down the police on one or two occasions it was hilarious! It's also an attitude perspective as well. In Germany, if lot's of accidents happen on a particular stretch of road, they fix the road and analyse why they're happening until the accidents lower in quantity. In Australia, they just put speed cameras and then lower the speed limit. I'm originally from the NT and a lot of stretches of road that I used to drive on frequently have been dropped by 10km/h in the last 20 years I've been there.

Victoria - large section of Gippsland freeway - used to be 110 - now mixture of 70 and 80 - with cameras frequently parked on side of the road. Rural roads falling to bits, and no funding outside melbourne, but they don't care about that. Huge amount of rural highways have been dropped to 80ks in the last few years. 60km town zones have been extended distances well outside the towns. The state is riddled with speed cameras. But you can still do a hundred on nearby blind single lane side roads with no visibility. There's been a ton of crashes lately where foreign drivers blast through clearly visible stop signs without even looking. Every time that happens the speed limit on the main road is subsequently reduced. No one investigates WHY these accidents occur and what needs to be done to reduce them. Basically what happens now in this state, is that someone dies, they "pretend" to care, immediately lower the limits, then rake in the cash, cynically using a horrible tragedy to justify the blatant cash grab. Its contemptible. And don't get me started on red camera lights in this state. If they have a camera the lights are ALWAYS short cycled, I often seen green cycles that only last only 3-5 seconds. How is that safe??? Lights with cameras are always de-syncronised with adjacent lights and kept on rapid cycle to maximise the number of cars stopping every hour. Flash Flash!!! Even worse the 3 second orange on most lights is a nightmare. How on earth truck drivers are supposed to pull up in the wet in that time is beyond me. Flash Flash!!! Its the opposite of safe, but none of that matters because it was only ever always about the money all of the time.
@crionics999 ай бұрын
Not to mention how much that short green cycle holds everyone up. Traffic at a standstill for kilometres because there's one set of lights that only stays green for 8 seconds, while the other direction with no camera facing it gets 35 seconds. Victoria's a crap place sometimes.

you make a legit point, speed zones in australia are a mess, hume hwy is 110kmh, all the way from sydney to melbourne and should be 130kmh and a twisty narrow dirt road in the country in the middle of nowhere is like 100kmh, when they should be 80kmh

Hey Ross, love your reviews mate. I’ve had this exact same argument to people but when you try and go against the system people start to hammer you and bring you down, and they always reply back with the classic “don’t speed and you won’t get fined” rubbish. Yes we get that but there is so much that happens on our roads that speed is just the easy go to target for easy money and blatant revenue raising. Australia is the biggest nanny state in the world when it comes to speeding fines, however I believe the main problem isn’t the laws or rules themselves, it’s the very people of this country who are spineless, almost as if they loved to be ruled and controlled and told what to do that they refuse to have a backbone and fight against this corruption, and this goes outside of driving fines aswell but that’s for another topic. The problem we have here is that we don’t drive with common sense or to the conditions of the road, we all drive in fear of being clocked over for 5-10km/h so we stick our eyes on our speedo more than the road infront of us and watch our surroundings for any hidden highway patrol, mobile speed cameras, fixed speed cameras almost as if it’s like playing a game of cat and mouse making sure you don’t get caught everytime you sit behind the wheel, it makes driving so hard to enjoy especially if you’re a car lover or enthusiast. And this is more obvious during double demerit holiday periods that we have in NSW, it is absolutely disgusting and it creates such poor driving behaviours. Cars have become much more safe, the technology has improved ten-fold, yet we still have such ridiculously low speed limits that were set more than 50 years ago when cars had no ABS or any of the modern-day safety tech that is now standard. We have 70km/h speed limits in certain pedestrian areas and then we have 60km/h speed limits on some open long stretch of road/highways that is very safe to travel at higher speeds, and just like you mentioned in the video, they set up mobile speed cameras, usually hidden behind trees or poles to catch you speeding down that long straight stretch of road, like it is so blatantly obvious that this is pure revenue raising and this whole “speeding kills” safety propaganda has gotten into the heads of the Australian public and it has worked into achieving what it wants and now any sort of speeding is heavily despised by the majority of the population as if it’s on par with being a criminal or worse than that. Our highways have a max speed limit of only 110km/h when most first world countries have over 130km/h and above, Germany classic example has unlimited speed on certain sections on the Autobahn and still they have less accidents and deaths on that road than we have here in Australia, and this all comes down to proper driver training, doing courses that teach you how to properly handle a car and have road courtesy and manners, which we severly lack here. Our driver education system here is pathetic, in NSW we get our Ls by doing a silly computer test, then we have to do 120hours of driver training with a full licensed driver which more than 99% of the population forge anyway, then we have one driving test to get our red P’s then another computer test to get our green Ps a few years later and then same thing again to get our full license, and I’ve heard lately people can just upgrade to a full license by simply paying without the need to even do a test. And on top of that our roads for a modern country are absolutely shocking and third world standard, there are so many potholes in Australia that you start to think it’s normal and part of the culture, and this is why our limits will never increase, but the main reason for it staying low or being reduced in some roads is simple, $$$.

I use Waze all the time here in UAE. Even though the speed tolerance is quite generous, eg, 80 and 100km/h zones allow you 20km/h (in Dubai) before the cameras fine you, the roads are so good you can easily stray over the limit and there a lot of cameras here too. So it's worthwhile. Cruise control is our friend. I'm dreading going back to Australia for this reason alone. Its blatant revenue raising in Australia!! 😐

Makes me realise how relaxed we have it in the UK in comparison. 70mph (112km/h) National speed limit for dual carriageway and 60mph (96km/h) limit for single carriageway (no centre barrier) roads. Enforcement doesn’t usually start until 10%+2mph over the limit and a re education course in lieu of penalty points is usually offered between 10%+2mph and 10%+9mph over the limit (ie between 79&86mph / 127&138km/h on a 70mph/112km/h road) if it’s your first offence in three years. The financial penalty for speeding is £100 ($193 AUD) unless you’re summoned to court for a high speed offence (over 95mph/153km/h on a 70mph/112km/h road) at which point the fine is based on your income and penalty points/disqualification period decided by the judge after considering the speed and any mitigating or aggravating circumstances.

One of the fundamental priorities of police work is to stop continuation of the offence. Speed cameras simply record the event and, in most cases, the offender only discovers that he was speeding three weeks later. Decent mobile police officers, and there are some, will observe a driver over a certain distance and take into a account short, though not excessive, increases in speed before determining whether or not to pull the car over. You only have to drift slightly and momentarily over the speed limit when passing a speed camera and you're gone. Speed cameras do nothing to stop dangerous speeding drivers who include intoxicated (alcohol/drugs) unlicensed, unregistered, dangerously modified vehicles, hoon driving etc etc.

When I first moved to QLD, I was stuck behind a bus doing well under the limit for several hundred metres. It was a 3 lane 60 zone & traffic was moderate. Being behind the bus is going slow, blocking a clear view ahead of me, so I'm scouting my rear view & blind spot to get into the next lane. As soon as I jump into the next lane, I see a speed camera & didnt think of it. Next thing I know, I've got a speeding fine for 22km over the speed limit (62km in a 40km school zone), which was 4 demerit points & $740+. Not knowing the area, I go back to investigate. It turns out the bus in front of me blocked the school zone sign & marone strip on the road. My attention to rear view & blind spot at that bad timing moment had me miss the sign on the other side of the road. Everyone else was doing 60km, so I was going with the flow of traffic around me. Makes me wonder how much that camera made that day. Waze is amazing. It's a bit laggy in some areas,, but saved me a lot of fines being new here. I've never seen so many cameras in one state for revenue raising, it's criminal.

Going into Melbourne City along the M1 used to be 100 all the way through, but now it’s 80 from over 10-15 minutes out of the city or something like that. And don’t get me started on the 40 road works zones when there is clearly no one working, and there’s clearly barriers that prevent any danger. The road is 80kmh, but you have to drive 40 when literally no one’s around… I just got on my P’s and I don’t wanna risk losing my license or getting demerit points, so I am obeying the law and driving 40 in said sections, but it actually feels less safe, because most people who have full licenses, more demerits, and more experience, all are driving between 50-80 while I’m there literally driving half their speed… it’s insanity! And when workers are there you can see people actually drive 40, and are safe, but when no one’s there it’s just not safe. There should be electronic roadworks signs or something that can be turned off when the road is safe to drive normal speeds (aka if there are no workers, or if the roadworks isn’t actually on or near the road itself and there’s no risk)

This is in Klms not Miles per Hour.. Another issue is the width of lanes when there are semi trailers that need room on curves. Then there are trucks that should not be on the third lane trying to overtake then hit a hill and slow very quickly.. Queensland have some of the highest road taxes…. Yet roads are few and often over loaded …. That's where the trouble comes.. I was on the Pacific Hwy Route 1. heading into Brisbane, Airport to pick up a visitor from overseas. @ 4.30 am very fews other on the Highway.. (10) in my direct that i saw. Suddenly after Darwin the Plane got flight emergency. A passenger was ill. It would arrive 30 mins earlier my trip was two ours down I was booked for 128klms an hour by a 28 Klm speed trap. On the Highway. I got to the airport and the plane had ambulance and fire rescue on the tar Mac.. A person was loaded into an ambulance. I could not see who it was and there was no information at hand.. from Airport staff.. It was a Heart Attack Victim.. ( So a medical emergency) The plane was then unloaded slowly little by little.. My friend of many years was one of the last off the plane.. I thank God that my friend (Elderly) like me.. was O.K I hoped that the person was going to be O.K. Two days later I recieve the fine. The Hwy was 110 klms an hour. Over $200.00. There needs to be more Hi-ways to the north/south further inline because there really is just one so everyone makes ther way to that high way. Over loading it. The country Hwys are no wider than the town road you showed and in some places smaller. Single lane each way. it is traffic frustration that is an issue. But you mentioned out side lane hogging??? Many times traffic is so heavy all lanes are full.. Now that is when Idiots cut over your nose or slot in 6 feet on your tail! @110klms an hour.. That is not enough room should there be a problem. Road rage is high here, usually by those not respecting required disdance. driving right up even that close you see bonnet NO front end lights or grill.. Push, Push, Pushing.. when for say me to change lanes I would also have to force myself in between vehicle that are very close.. That said there are thos that drift along at say 90 klms in he outside lane…. In Australia it is illegal to pass on the inside lane.. So People do because the one DH. Won't move! The Fact. people do pass on the inside shows in that case. there is room.. But let me stress that is not that often the case it is in heavy traffic. when so D.H. want to be one car ahead. Many time I have passed those same people later.. Also often they push like crazy. then 5klms later they push to an exit.. ?????? SO YOU ARE CORRECT AUSTRALIANS NEED BETTER DRIVING LESSONS AND A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF ROAD RULES.. SO PEOPLE ACT LIKE THEY ARE THE POLICE. HOGGING THE ROAD… I WORKED A COMPANY REP FOR AN AMERICA MULTI-NATIONAL. I COME FROM EUROPE WHERE TRAINING WAS A BIG FOCUS ! MY CAR A FORD XR6 TURBO.. SET FROM FACTORY LOWER THAN A STANDARD FORD FALCON.. QUITE CAPABLE OF TWICE THE SPEED LIMIT. WHICH IN KLMS SOUND VERY FAST. BUT. 100 MPH IS 160KLMS PER HOUR.. 7O MPH IN THE U.K. 112KLMS BUT LETS NOT FORGET. AUSTRALIA 27 MILLION. PEOPLE OVER A CONTINENT. IF THE GOVERMENT HELPED KEEP COUNTRY OPEN WITH BETTER ROADS IT IS LIKELY THERE WOULD BE LESS TRAFFIC ON ANY ONE ROAD !! A REAL ISSUE!

I always thought that an advanced drivers course should be mandatory for L platers. They could drop the price down a bit, because if every L plater has to pass it to get their full license, they'll still be making heaps of money. Also get rid of the cylinder restrictions. They're stupid and unnecessary. For example, in SA, a P plater cannot legally drive a 90 year old Ford V8 - which has less than 100 horsepower and would struggle to hit 130 - but can legally drive a base model Tesla Model S, which is up there as being one of the fastest accelerating road legal vehicles. I say keep the 130kW/t limit, but do away with cylinder and aspiration restrictions. While I'm on that topic, P platers can't do more than 100km/h. That's dangerous, get rid of that so they can keep up with traffic on the freeway and not be a nuisance to other motorists.

Or stay witin the limits. Cars regularly fly past my place on a suburban street in Melbourne, in a 50 k zone, traveling 100+ kph (62 miles per hour)

I agree with every point made in this video. I reckon Australia would honestly have some of the worst, most useless drivers in the world. Even drivers in NZ are better and they seem to have more driver etiquette. They actually get out of the fast lane and aren't oblivious to everything around them. And i love the waze app too. It's literally saved me thousands over the last 5 years! 😉👍

Every day, when I'm on my way to work, I have to stop to turn right at a T junction (I'm on the side road). Most day's there's a string of people travelling in the right lane, so I have to wait several minutes just to turn. Australian drivers are oblivious to everyone else on the road.

So glad you’re calling it out mate. Totally agree. 👍.

The reason for these ridiculously slow speed limits in Western Australia is the Monash University Accident Research Centre that may still be headed up by a bloke called Professor Max Cameron. I first heard of Max back around 2014. He has worked in road safety since about 1965 and been at the Monash University Accident Research Centre since 1990. Max's best brain fart to date is he called for either the entire Australian national highway network, or the entire Western Australia highway network to be reduced to a maximum speed limit of 80 kph. Naturally, Max is one of those overstuffed wafflers with many useless accreditations to his name... been on this and that board or committee of wafflers and windbags etc. What I thought about Max is here is a bloke that has maybe driven 60 kilometres a day to and from Monash University..... 5 days a week..... 40 to 45 weeks a year. This guesstimate can be calculated as 300 kilometres per week x 45 week/ year x 33 years.... 445,500 km of Perth city driving. We don't appear to be looking at a person with a whole lot of personal practical driving experience for his age. If driving around Perth City is the bulk of his driving experience for the last 33 years, you've got to wonder at how much long distance and high speed driving he has actually. done... where he has been at the wheel. Max is the cause of the slow speed issue in Western Australia. I think he is retiring in 2024.

@@RossReviewsau I used WAZE recently when I was last in Western Australia. Not being too phone savvy makes it a bit harder to use. Thoroughly agree... the more people who use it and enter information.... the better it is..... but it could be made a bit more user friendly. There is no dedicated fast lane in Australia.. I own two SS manual sedans... a VE series 1 and a VF SSV series 1 with cam, full exhaust and heads upgrade etc. It sh*ts me to tears as well some days when people won't move out of the way in the right hand lane. The upside is most vehicles I pass tend to stay in the rear view mirror or a quick show of torque helps to encourage them to give up the chase. 😉😉 I am wondering how one of those cheaper thermal imaging cameras or testing units would go for roadside cameras.... but it might depend which way the camera's speed detection is angled... up or down the road..like how they used to set Poliscans so the beam was facing away and up the road from the oncoming traffic to make it harder to detect. The other thing might be how effective these thermal imagers are from behind a windscreen, and during day light hours.... would the engine heat in front affect their ability to detect the heat signature ahead. They would probably work really well at night.

years ago, there was great channel about who could out do the next person on burning/destroying fixed cameras until youtube took it down, sadly Aussies don't have the balls to do that but the Europeans embraced it

My 1hz is only good for 120 . Alot of these 4x4s won't handle the speed but yeah it should be at least 130

If they don’t do 130 they came stay to the left 👌 but speed limits are shocking here

Brisbanes ICB, heading south to the city, you start at 60kmh before the onramp, to 70kmh past the onramp for a short distance, then you hit a 200m tunnel and it goes back down to 60kmh, then after that it goes back up to 70kmh, and if you keep right and take the toll tunnel its 80kmh, unless you keep in the left 3 lanes in which case it randomly goes back down to 60kmh (even though its still a motorway) all the way to the Brisbane river. It's easily the dumbest stretch of road I've ever had the displeasure of driving on.
