Thank you for this. Last year I didn’t have time to plant some perennials so I filled an unused empty raised bed filled it around the pots with shredded leaves and covered with frost cloth with good results next spring.

The best way to protect a plant in a greenhouse with an earth base is to dig a big hole, and place the plant in it , below soil level. Do not back fill. The residual heat in the soil at say 30 cm down will always be above freezing.Cover top of hole with a few layers of fleece. Ventilate on mild days.
@leagarner3675 Жыл бұрын
In my area, it's 4 ft down to the frost line.

Horticulture student in the US. So Rosie, just a question on the watering of plants in pots throughout the winter. You specified with the guara that you should cease watering until spring. Does this mean ALL watering? Because to my knowledge going in once every month to two months to do a quick watering ( depending on substrate and species size) was recommended to me. However, you cease ALL watering together ? Should this be consistent with ALL of my plants ? Can’t thank you enough for your channel. Me and a fellow student watch your show religiously. And can’t thank you enough for this Incredible free resource.

I keep all my polystyrene boxes and put my plants in those over winter in the greenhouse

Very helpful. Curious to know, could I bring my pots into the greenhouse and surround them with a layer or dry bark mulch? Will that help insulate the pots?I use a hoop house to grow tomatoes in the ground. I live in Zone 5. I have had some survival in large pots but I was thinking of digging up some dahlia tubers and storing them in gallon pots. ...

Thank you so much for your advice. Do you have any tips for Rudbeckia, echinacea and lupins for autumn/winter care. Many thanks and best wishes.
@rosyhardy18 Жыл бұрын
Most of these plants are much hardier depending on you location. Do not cut back to ground level and if you can leave most growth there on both Rudbeckia and Echinacea until the spring. The Lupinus give a tidy up to around 6 inches/15cm from ground level.

Rosy best advice for amistad pleas. I lost a healthy plant last year which I left out. I saved the other in a greenhouse and I tool cuttings which I have planted out this year. What's my best option?

Great advice for overwintering Salvias. I just wondered if they needed any watering if not much? I took cuttings last year and most of them took but I put them in the cold frame and it wasn’t warm enough so I will leave them in the greenhouse this year.
@rosyhardy18 Жыл бұрын
Yes in the greenhouse will be fine do not over water during the winter. If full grown plants perhaps once a month. If cuttings mist occasionally but give them good ventilation, that is the key thing.

Great advice , I have salvia hot lips and Amstrad and have no greenhouse, should I try and protect them outside or is it a lost cause?
@rosyhardy18 Жыл бұрын
You can try to protect outdoors yes. It is easier with hot lips to succeed.
@BenFlop Жыл бұрын
I dig mine up and stack them against the house wall, under a porch. Amistad is a hit and a miss so I always take cuttings but Hot Lips has survived 4 years in a row. Main enemy of salvias is water.

Do you recommend watering geraniums when overwintering?
@MoonSpinners Жыл бұрын
If they’re in a frost free place, then you can give them a dribble sparingly when they get bone dry. I tend to take cuttings every year and root them in pots on my window ledges in the house, I water them barely at all

How can I overwinter Hollyhocks in pots
@MoonSpinners Жыл бұрын
It’s best to move them into a frost free place like a garage or in an unheated room indoors.
@pastorgabrielle3117 ай бұрын
Just show me how too water them. That’s all I need too know.
