Damn I had no idea the devs were students, that’s incredibly cool considering the quality of games they’ve already put out. If I remember correctly, most of their games were for gamejams so that adds like another level of challenge. Gameplay wise, my favorite of theirs is probably elevator hitch but honestly this one might have my favorite story/concept despite being made on a time limit. The way everything is lost is just so bleak and horrifying that the impact of it stays with me longer than the others. My heart wishes there was a happier ending but it was a valid decision to not have one.

The creator of this youtube video did not create the game, did not develop the game, and has absolutely no ability to edit or improve the game whatsoever. Writing a comment here will not help the developers "grow", because this random youtuber is not a game developer. There IS a time and place for criticism! It's a very important thing, and that's what review boards are for! But you don't go into a museum to tell a random security guard how to improve the art, you don't go to a grocery store to tell a random cashier how to improve the food, you don't go to the theater to tell a random ticket salesman how to improve the movie, and you don't go into a random youtuber's comment section to write a game review. There's a time and place for everything, mate! But if you wanna criticize the game you gotta try finding an actual review board that the developers can read first, cause they probably aren't gonna start lookin through this random comment section for feedback 😅

There’s definitely themes of ignoring red flags in friends and addiction but whether intentional or not this game also makes commentary on how tourist spots exploit nature, ignoring possible consequences of using sacred land

I think the meaning of this game has something to do with friends changing. Like you can feel like you’re the one being weird because everyone else around you is acting different. I think this even more because of the conversation about Jane’s cousin who left her friends who were assholes. The ending might be that just because other people are sinking, you shouldn’t necessarily sink with them but rather let go. Once again an amazing game from Racheldrawsthis. I know people are confuzzled and such but this is probably one of my more favorite games from the studio. It's so depressingly haunting but the tad moments June had with Ryan are so sad, theres definitely a more in depth meaning behind it if I had to guess.

@@skacool LONG RIP SPOILERS!! … idk personally to me I think it’s about mental health and alcoholism, I’ve felt for June throughout this entire game because she’s perceived to be a childish adult amongst those who are older and act it. How all her friends have drank themselves to “Death” (notice how Alcohol and wine is what ends up infecting them) which I think signifies Alcoholism and the death of childhood. McCoy is the first to feel the repercussions of punching June which snaps him out of it, which typically people under the influence are more prone to violence which is what we see with McCoy. Vonnie binge eats and gets aggressive verbally when under the influence and so does their other friend (sorry forgot her name lol) but she goes into a sort of depressive state. Everyone who’s affected becomes “wasted” away. Noticeably Ryan is unaffected on the outside but deep inside he was definitely feeling it. Which I think shows how mental health can go unchecked. Ryan leaving his coat with June showing he was willingly leaving (it’s also something people do when they’re committing) it’s also why we DONT physically see Ryan’s face when he’s heading into the water, he wasn’t infected but he CHOSE to die with them despite being the only sober one, however he was a long time drinker and so maybe seeing his friends be affected by beer and wine ultimately caused him to OFF himself so he wouldn’t become wasted away like them or because he became so depressed by their deaths. June mentions her cousin cutting off her friends a few weeks back and how it affected her, which I think is ultimately what happens here with June too.

i do take that to heart and will say for what it is i actually love how it turned out in terms of art, style, animation, story, etc :P......... buuuuuuut I do feel inclined to still be slightly picky about the abrupt way it just ends :/ time crunch or not with all the frames they had for character conversations and whatnot i feel they still could've added a bit more to the endings :/

There may also be another theme with addiction, suicide, and alcoholism if we do some speculations. If you remember what Vonnie says when we say her on Sunday, she says she needs to "give the fishes back". This applies to all the people throughout the game who pretend to act in the name of "her" (which would logically be a reference to mother nature). This could indicate that all the people in the friend group are destroying themselves for nature. However, could this really be a noble cause when this makes them hurt another human, even their friends ? This is why I think one of the main topic of the game is the fight towards a cause: one can fight for a cause in which they trust, but it must never go to the length of hurting others to serve it.

I believe that this new game was a bit not enough compared to the dev's other games. Yes, it touched on a heavy topic ( Like married in red, elevator hitch, etc ) and the concept's cool! However I wish the game had been done a little more well since it feels like its missing something unlike the other games. To be honest we never really knew what was actually going on in the island and it was unclear. It feels like us ( Mc, June ) is left in the dark about everything. Its like June never really got a conclusion to how this all was happening and why it happened.( Its like we basically know the game symbolises toxic friendships and losing friends to drinking but we never knew what the so called " zombies " mean when they refer to " her " or what Vonnie really means when she talked about something that has to do with fish? ) Nevertheless, the game has definitely improved! The music in this one sets the environment very well especially the last scene. It really felt so empty and sad. ( Even though we dont feel the desperateness as much or even any as June ). But, from what the other commenters said, they were in a timecrunch so this is really good for a rushed game!

Long comment warning. There are two explanations and two ways of looking at the game, both of which make sense. (The literal and the non-literal.) 1 Looking at the game in a less literal way, it can represent toxic friendship / Alcohol Addiction This theory gains more strength when we look at how at how Ryan and June are treated by their "friends." And how they behave when they Get this Sudden addiction to "food" or "water". Behaving either Aggresive or hostile toward june when she try to stop them or Question them about what they are doing. Especially McCoy who hit her And suddenly Say sorry in a brief moment Of Lucidity. (Typical behavior of addicted people. Whether to alcohol or dr_ugs) The ending just represents that by trying to help others due to that fear of ending up alone, June friends' problems end Up drown her with them. (That's why McCoy grabs his arm back when June tries to bring him to the "surface".) In the good ending, June still tries to help McCoy, but eventually manages to get to the surface alone. (She managed to escape from that toxic cycle by realizing that she couldn't save them And Letting them "go", but ending up totally alone. Just as she was so afraid of end, Despite this, this ending leaves us with a slight hope of recovery as we hear the ferry approaching the island in the distance.) And about what happened with Ryan. He was the one who was most aware of the situation. (Even being willing to "abandon" The rest on the beach to escape With June when he realized that they had no salvation) I don't think that he left June behind. But she was too obsessed with helping others that he finally decided to Take The first step And Getting out of that cycle of toxicity. But leaving his jacket on top of her when he leave, Still offering his help But no longer physically. (When the water drags June down, the jacket ends up on the shore of the beach so Ryan in this end Can't Help us anymore, being only June's decision whether to continue holding on to them or return to shore.) That's why we only see him briefly at The end. Representing that he wanted to help her But June was still trapped and unable to let go of her friends. 2 Seeing everything in the game in a more literal way And Thanks to various dialogues I can tell that all this Is because Of The sea. With McCoy Staring blank at It to later Drinking water desperately, vonnie eating all The sea food to try to bring them Back to The sea And Carmen Inside the bathtub To the point of overflowing it. I can't say what exactly caused only the three of them to become infected. But it's already progress.) In the end they all just end up drowning in the sea by themselves. (Ryan probably Get infected also in this end)

The way the people react with water, drinks, food, is very similar to a really drunk person. McCoy becomes violent at an instant - hence why when sober he very actively rejects violence. Vonnie's asshole tendencies get amplified by a million, and she's downright caustic. Carmen is catty and referencing things she shouldn't, it's classic drunkard behavior. In the ending, Ryan also succumbs, and June can either 'follow', to try to save him to her own downfall, or 'go back', to abandon Ryan but live.

i can kinda see what they mean idk. sometimes relationships end and you dont even get why things are left without conclusion, people drift off for no reason or get distant from one day to another forever...and maybe we are the ones who have done it too to someone else realizing it or not.. if you confront them about it it might not be the best idea as ryan implyed, they might just deny it or not take it seriously, that "cant you take a hint" line kinda hit home too sometimes thats what people expect of you but it is never expected an explanation from Them at the end...either you fall or you get out and be free and some of us that fall do it consiously kinda like ryan did🥲 i guess sometimes you have to let go of people too even if its sudden without explanation or too sad to do. n e ways i loved the game love rachel and team!!!! thank you therisingofelf for the gameplay as mine kept crashing and couldnt finish it myself 😂 it was made with a lot of dedication and thought behind it i like these games too also personally v much loved vonnie's design 🙏
