Awesome video. I’m glad to see you told him to move the metal coil racks underneath the actual coils. That’s probably the main reason why the original wood broke. The racks need to placed within the width of the coils.

19:43- "You should them in closer" Thats why the dunnage failed. The coil racks must be under the coil to support the dunnage and coil.

I don't use these cheap coil straps. I have over 40 years doing coils and some that I have hauled with RGN and have saddles with D rings on each end custom built out of steal have indoor outdoor carpet on them and still lay rubber mats under them and always put 2 extra transport chain's for every 10,000 lbs of weight and have never had one moved. I just moved some down in Galveston had to have police escort for that were so big was over width and way over height. Had to train every OO that was there not one had a clue how to secure a coil. A few minutes of proper preparation can save someone's family's life. They are not to be taken lightly.

Great training video showing what happens when your load becomes insured. Look at the broken 4x4's.

Looks like you were wearing tennis shoes on this job. In your industry I would think steel toes would be the footwear of choice.

Good job putting the coils racks under the edge of the coils! Those coils were probably on 12 to 14,000 so two coil racks are plenty in my book but his issue was not chains or straps but improper placement of the coil racks!!! Great job and stay safe buddy!!!

Nice piece of crane work, no fuss, just got on with the job, As regards to coils on this side of the Alantic steel mills will only load coil carriers and refuse to load flat beds,regards from Ireland,
@stanpatterson50336 жыл бұрын
You have specialized coil-carrier trailers over there? I have seen railroad cars that carry coils (up to a certain diameter) and pop a round hatch cover over the top to keep weather and debris out, but in North America, we don't have dedicated coil-carrier trailers that I know of. Most guys who carry coils wouldn't get a 2-way load (or return trip of coils going back the way they came from), so that's why we use flatbeds, drop-decks, step-decks, etc. for the versatility of being able to carry a multitude of different cargoes using the same trailer.

Hey thanks a lot I appreciate that and we don’t have any trailers like that hear well nothing I have ever come across yet nifty idea I suppose would probably be a lot safer some guys get lazy thinking they have taken the drive before and before they mow it something major has happened thanks for watching

A rule of thumb I use chains for steel coils and straps and mud flaps for aluminum. Also with a chin that long go through the coil twice or more if you got the length. That way your spreading out the pressure. Instead of all the weight on one link per side you could spread it to two or three links per side,

No chain protectors on the ID of the coils ..and if he crossed his chains he would not have the shifting in coils he had. I know its one chain for every 10,000 lbs. but a few more chains for added insurance would help too. Also some rubber mats under the coil bunks would help. I have been loading coils for over 30 years. And I know these O.O's are under the gun, with " Just in time delivery" in the automotive industry. So every dollar counts ..this guy has more time and money spent than what he got for the load !!

This driver don't know just how close he came to killing himself or someone else on road. Big coil like that will take the cab of that truck off like it was nothing.

(2)Prohibition on crossing of tiedowns when coils are transported with eyes crosswise. Attaching tiedowns diagonally through the eye of a coil to form an X-pattern when viewed from above the vehicle is prohibited

Back about 10yrs ago while sitting and waiting to depart from CSX Barr yard, one of those coils broke.open. I was hundreds of feet away and watched it uncoil, bent out the sides of a gondola railroad car and flung 30ft of sprung steel over the track. Took all of two seconds to happen.

How do you promote safety by wearing a pair of soft toed sneakers on this type of work?

Get what you are saying but..Coil comes down on ya foot it's gone no matter what your wearing.

I noticed you had a red rear light out on the drivers side second one down .

Might be a stupid question but I've always wondered why not just lay the coils flat instead of standing up? Is it because they are easier to load/unload when standing up?
@TruckinDavo5 жыл бұрын
I assume it's easier to load/unload.... Be safer to lay flat but that's how the world works. Cheapest not safest.

Hey man. For that stabilizer foot issue? Please, just get a bungee to hold up the d ring. You can get those self stick-em hooks from Home Depot to use on the leg if you don't want to weld a little hook. Then, just use the bungee cord to hold up that d ring while deploying your stabilizers. Sorry, I couldn't help myself. LOL. Subscribing now, by the way! Stay safe.
@McKaysWreckerservice6 жыл бұрын
Michael Biron lol i actually just moved the d ring back to the top of the leg so i didn’t have to keep upswing my hammer will definitely look into maybe welding a hook on it because now i have to switch it back and fourth thanks for the advice always appreciated

I'm not a truck driver, but I do have quite a few years experience with heavy equ. moving and engineering... so I have a dumb question because I don't understand this rigging. Translation: Don't laugh at my dumb question... Anyway, I realize these coils are moderately heavy, but the shape and platform almost seem to beg for lateral chains across the tops of these coils to prevent them from tipping over if an evasive move is made by the driver. Is this a fruitless exercise? Why isn't this done? Would it just take the entire trailer over with it or something if they were secured counter across the tops as well? Just eyeballing it with no experience moving these, it seems they would tip. they aren't what you would necessarily call top-heavy, but it is a lot of weight stacked in a narrow column base. Anyway.. I'm curious if someone wouldn't mind answering without calling me a dumbass :-)

For these type of narrow steel coils running chains through it from side to side and then can run over the belly wrapped the coil on top side by using edge protectors and binders on both side to tighten the chain...
