That's what I said too. I saw them in Minneapolis/St. Paul,MN. And they were loud & Awesome, as was Cinderella. Roth was making sure he was going to blow Van Halen away! That's why he got Vai & Sheehan. The first 3-4 tours with Van Halen he was good too! (Singing all the words) but Dave has always been a showman fitst!!! All the running around, jumping, all the kicks he does and tbe big split he does at the beginning off the drum riser. If he was even remotely drunk he would break a leg or tear an ACL or hamstring. I spent many years doing martial arts i know. He was awesome on stage. I wish I would've seen him in Van Halen, especially like the Women & Children or Fair Warning tours.

Yeah one of those camcorders that takes a full size VHS tape, viewfinder and lens hanging off either end... crazy that people were filming rock concerts back then. Of course, security weren't necessarily looking for video cameras since they were new and most people at these shoes didn't have them or wouldn't risk breaking one by taking it to a concert.

Another note......Roth gets some credit for pushing the band to what we see here. One thing Vai has always mentioned about what he learned from Dave, was that he needed to be in shape. At first he didn't understand why that would be such a big deal to Dave. but he worked for Dave, so he listened. Dave got him running, biking, and eating good. He said playing live, if doing it right, and to respect the audience, is like a sport, and you have to be in shape. Watch Vai and Billy, and you can see how important fitness was to their performance. And of course Greg is arguably putting in the most work.

I was at the show for this tour in Wichita, KS. I love Eddie and the boys, and I saw them four times with Dave. On this tour, Dave seemed committed to outdoing his old band mates, and he was more focused, more energetic, more entertaining, just more of a rock star than he had ever been. None of the drunken blathering and "I forgot the fucking words" shit. Just a hardcore rocker with a kick-ass band pouring every ounce of himself into entertaining us. Plus the partying he did In 82 to 84 was probably a bigger reason why the Van Halen shows were what they were. I remember when Dave did the interview after leaving VH and saying when he heard the VH camp critizing Dave and insulting him then the gloves were off. He said he will eat VH for breakfast. (I believe this is where the title Eat'em and Smile came from) I also remember reading and hearing about this tour and it was the band to see. Hugely successful and kept the promise Dave made to VH about having them for breakfast. Pretty amazing feat considering VH halen was hugely successful with Sammy. But what an incredible show DLR put on. This is how I will always remember him.

sadly it was ultimately just a pointless battle of egos, entirely without point. In the end, it's clear Eddie and Van Halen came out 'on top' whilst Dave, after Vai quit the band, was cast into the wilderness, with ever decreasing sales and interest, whereas VH had 4 big albums before Sammy walked / was fired.

Saw this tour at the Rosemont Horizon (Chicago area near Ohare) not sure what it’s called now. Great freaking show! My band mates and I were slack-jawed in amazement. Just incredible musicianship, showmanship and pure energy! 30 years later I had the pleasure of having Greg Bisonnette sit in w/ our cover band (our drummer at the time knows him and his wife) for a rousing version of Grand Funk’s American Band around 2015. Just a great drummer and nice guy.

I saw this tour in Augusta, Maine - was right up front against the stage for most of it (back before a gap between the stage and audience was common). I wanted to be a guitar player and idolized Steve Vai at the time - I was literally 10 feet from him when he was doing a lot of his solo. I went to a lot of concerts in the 80s and 90s and this show was absolutely the most entertaining. For sheer pageantry and performance, this was hands down the best.

I was at this show in Greensboro NC. It was one of the best concerts I've seen, Cinderella opened and they were awesome too. I also saw Van Halen on the 5150 tour the same year and was blown away by that. I never got into the Dave vs Van Halen or the Eddie vs Steve nonsense, different styles. I wish I could go back in time and see both shows again.

ALittleAintEnough Come on dude. I'm a fan of this line DLR line up and as far as I'm concerned it was the best band for Sheehan and Vai, and Dave actually tried to perform again. But Van Halen was coming off of 5150..which was awesome, and Eat Em N Smile was right before Van Halen's next album which was appropriately named OU812 in response to the name of Roth's Album name. Some pretty big songs on both 5150 and OU812...then FUCK came out which was perhaps the best Van Halen line up. This was Dave's best work outside of Van Halen...Eat Em N Smile was/is a bad ass album.

They didn't write any songs. Or couldn't. They were virtuosos but could not write a #1 song or put together a top 10 album. Contrast that with Ed Van Halen who was a virtuoso but also wrote popular songs. Popular songs= money. Jump for example. Hot for Teacher. Look at the songs on the 5150 album. Being a virtuoso does not mean popularity or making money. To the public you are just an oddball. Now if a virtuoso blends that talent with great songwriting that the public loves, also add a touch of partying reputation and you have a winning combo. That's why DLR failed and Van Halen was so popular (succeeded)
