Jackson Civil Engineering is using ultra low-carbon concrete during the construction of a multimillion pound canal barrier at Forge Island in the centre of Rotherham.
The works, on behalf of Rotherham Borough Council, form the central part of the Rotherham to Kilnhurst Flood Alleviation Scheme that the Council is already delivering along 5km of the River Don.
The ultra low-carbon concrete is being provided by Jackson’s supply chain partner Breedon Concrete and will be used on non-structural areas of the build, such as for abutment supports and extensions to the tow path. A total of 180m³ ultra low-carbon concrete will be used, bringing up to a 70% reduction in embedded carbon compared with traditional concrete.
