Just found your channel, starting with 094. Wow - I love your spirit! Trust me, I've been sailing since college in '78 and the tales like this one are the ones you'll tell at the pub more often than the 'perfect sunset cruise'. As this is 2 years ago, I'm sure you've got it all figured out a sorted by now - but one thing that I noticed that might help is a tiller brake or lines to hole the tiller in place (usually centered) when splashing or retrieving from the trailer. Makes the track consistent, at least. Well done, truly.

Wow. I jumped out of my chair when I saw the broken mast. I hope you have a new one now, which is 3 years later. With that being said, the scamp I just got has fiberglass over wood, and painted shamefully. I was going to sand the fiberglass off and have nice wood spars. This video changed my mind.

Jo, Hope to see a second launch with new mast. I guess you have to make new mast blocks to fit the mast truck. You are so close. I love my SCAMP and how well it performs.

Hey, oh it's definitely already happened. Just got pretty slack with the follow up mast video after finishing the launch one 😅. Definitely got a lot of sailing in over the (southern) summer, and have some winter projects planned that I need to stop procrastinating and get started (planning to release vids of any modifications, etc, too). Life does get in the way though.

Brilliant video! Well done for the build. I'm so sorry you had to do the "row of shame" 😂 but you took it in good spirits and you'll still be telling this story when you're 95 years old. More Scamp sailing videos please! God bless & fair winds, Chris 👍

@@dana_pike By the way I love your pig stick for your burgee. Did you make it yourself? I've been thinking about ways to hoist flags and anchor light on my SCAMP.
@dana_pike
@dana_pike 3 жыл бұрын
@@SpikeA it's actually a segment of old fibreglass tent pole I had lying around. Worked well, though I need to tweak it as it got in the way of the halyard and is the reason why the sail wasn't quite hoisted all the way up.

Man, I’m so sorry that happened to you, you seem much more deserving that on your maiden voyage. I have no doubt you’ll fix it with a lot better wood. One thing I noticed was that it didn’t break at any of the joints, so you can proud of that. I can’t wait to see what wood you’ll use on the mast next time. Keep going, young man, you got this. Jo, I feel your disappointment when you lost your mast. I have really enjoyed watching your build for over a year. It's always a day of joy when you posted a new video. You were a great help to me as I built my SCAMP in Port Townsend Washington. You have an amazing attitude. Love your boat name. J. Doug

I've been watching your videos for around 3 years, and I am so glad to see you launch. To be honest, I too was always worried about your mast. I cringed when you built it, yet at least it was fairly safe on the Lake.

Enjoyed watching your whole build Jo, so it was great to see her in the water. Never mind about the mast, no one was hurt and you were able to take it all home at the end of the day with a little beaten pride. I find it a little frustrating building in Australia, we just dont have access to the idea timbers that many of our overseas people have.
@dana_pike
@dana_pike 3 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks. Yeah it is totally frustrating. I think the plans called for spruce for the mast. Where do you even go about getting spruce here? It would be nice if there was some sort of "equivalent timber" section in the plans for those of us that don't live in North America *sigh*.

Thanks! New one already sorted, took less than a week 😅. I think you can tell I was desperate to go sailing. Omg I'm so envious of NZ and the sailing you guys have there. Was planning on visiting for the Americas Cup, but covid 😭. I'd love to go sailing there one day. Wonder what it'd cost to ship the SCAMP over? 🤔

Jo, I hope you felt as proud of yourself as I did for you. That's an awesome achievement. And yeah, the mast. It was always just a proof of concept piece anyway. I remember that episode where you discussed using hardware store pine and thought, uh oh. That aside, everything seemed to be flawless. Your waterline looked spot on and that wee thing seems to sail like a dream. Congratulations.
@dana_pike

I think I probably did 😅. Yep, apart from the mast, I was really happy with how everything went. In retrospect the mast breaking was for the best anyway since it happened in a reasonably controlled environment and the new one is much better.

Wonderful! Congratulations. Another Welsford on the water... after you (re)made the aluminum mast. Remember to put a block in it around the mast for strength.
@dana_pike
@dana_pike 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yep, the fleet keeps growing. I didn't end up putting any reinforcement in the aluminium tube and it's held up fine in quite a bit stronger winds than on launch day. I ended up having to get a somewhat over sized (compared to what Wellsford recommends) tube due to availability here, so it's plenty strong enough, albeit almost as heavy as the wooden one (the 'correct' tube is about 4kg, with my mast and the wooden one weighing in at about 7kg each). 🤞Anyway 😅.

@@dana_pike Excellent. How thick are the walls? I believe mine are 3mm. Also I put a pool-worm in the top section to prevent sinking. Not sure if that actually did anything.
@dana_pike
@dana_pike 3 жыл бұрын
@@rikvandervaart2601 I believe I went with 80mm outer diameter x 2mm wall thickness, compared to a 69.85mm outer diameter x 1.65mm wall thickness recommended by Welsford. I looked at 3mm thickness for extra strength, but that would have bumped up the total weight to over 10kg vs 6.8kg with the 2mm. I think (hope lol) there should still be plenty of strength with what I got anyway.

Haha and holy crap, tbh weigh the broken mast, i wouldnt be surprised if stainless steel tube is lighter than solid pine? It would be way stronger than ally or hardwood, just a thought? And if you do go ally or stainless either way stuff it full of pool noodles so it floats in a disaster hahaha just resin the top and bottom so its airtight.. shit happens, we all learn in the end lol, what ive learned from your build, is fk building a scamp ill just build something 5 times the size for around the same price lol ( which i gather you now realise could be done too haha) cheers for the build updates think ill learn from them and go ally or stainless on the mast too now, and maybe go for 22ft plus on hull length for those camping trips with friends.. keep at it man, the scamp looks a true boss with that red junkrig sail, shes pretty as hell thats for sure...
