Today we are comparing the Roto razor platinum edition versus the Rockwell versa cut. Both of these are mini skill saws. A few weeks ago I did a review of the Roto razor and talked about the many features that it has as well as several that I did not like in particular the handgrip and the triggers for the safety. A few weeks later I came across our Rockwell versa cut right off the bat this seems to address some of those issues with the handgrip of the Roto razor platinum. The handle of the Rockwell is much more ergonomically designed and very comfortable the trigger mechanism for release and the safety and the power trigger are both in the same location making it one smooth action to release the safety and activate the saw blade. This is a huge improvement over the Roto razor. Many of them have the same features approximately the same size I will say the notches for the saw location are better on the Roto razor but that's something that can be fixed relatively easy on the Rockwell versacut. After using the Rockwell versacut I realized that it has a major flaw well maybe not major but the plunging mechanism is completely different than their Roto razor and is much more uncomfortable and awkward to plunge at the saw into your work. However, after using both of these tools extensively the hand grip on the Rockwell is so much more comfortable as well as to trigger action that it is my preferred saw. So if I had to choose to go out and buy one new it would definitely be the Rockwell it will just take time getting used to the awkward plunge motion of this particular saw. You have done the DIY community a huge favor by making this video. I"m kind of old fashioned, however. I do tend to like various gadgets, but i try not to buy gadgets unless I need them. For the "plunge" cut you mention, I find the old tried and true "drill a hole first, then insert the blade of a jigsaw" method still works, and I can see where I'm at and where I'm going very easily. It would be nice had they made the shoe plate like that on a regular circular saw; that would've worked. Great vid, though. Very helpful. I got the ad in my email for the Rotorazer and was seriously considering it. Now I have more information.

Looking for one of these small and light enough for a small woman. Some of those battery operated saws are incredibly heavy and unwieldy. Ability to control your device is a major issue.

Thanks for the review comparison. I was thinking about purchasing that Rotorazor and I didn't know about the Rockwell. As a female, I have smaller hands so that grip info was very helpful.

I wonder if there is an easy way to just REMOVE the safety switch on the top of the Rotorazor? That would solve the issue.... I don't quite understand what that is protecting against anyway?

Even thought I would not recommend removing any safety switch, I certainly understand, In this case it a pain in the butt.

I’m so happy I found your video. I have the Rockwell Versa Cut, I really like it a lot. Even though I do like it, I always wondered if I should have got the Rotorazor instead! So now I can be content! Also, I have smaller hands (especially being a girl) so I don’t think I’d like the safety button where it is either!! Thank you! and about the safety on the razor- seems like once you get it in you can let up on the top (safety) button. idk, for a girl with big hands I don't wanna fight with the plunge, i'd rather mess with the trigger. tho my uses are likely less complex. thanks for the info

Based on your experience with both, which in your opinion would work better for mainly ripping vinyl plank flooring (with a guide clamped on the vinyl plank), or would the Rockwell work better for mainly rip cuts? Or would you say neither:)

Well for me, anytime I’m ripping stuff I would prefer to do it on a table saw it’s going to be much more accurate. If you only have these two to choose from then I would go with the Rockwell but honestly I’m not sure I would do much ripping with these tools they’re really not designed for that in my opinion. You certainly can do a piece here or there but if you’re trying to do a big job a tablesaw is the best option.
