Got a tip from aircraft field, spray on stripper, cover stripper with straps of wax paper. It will keep stripper from drying out to fast.

Just ran across this. You have to sweat plastic with a butane torch then quickly wipe with rubbing alcohol. This releases the slick material (silicone) that is inbeded in plastic to help release from a mold. Do this first then, scuff, then clean, then adhesion promoter, then paint, then clear!

Hey Eric! I'm looking to do this to the fenders on my Yamaha 3 wheeler. How did this hold up? I have done some research and it looks like the thing that people have the most problem with is the clear coat breaking when the fenders bend slightly. Has that been an issue for you?
@rotorway1336 жыл бұрын
Hello Andy, I swear to god that I haven't had any problems whats so ever !!! No peeling, no cracking....nothing !! The secret is really in properly Wet Sanding everywhere. Also, Adhesion Promoter about 5-10 minutes before spray paint. 1 or 2 coats of paint....then you can also spray clear if you wish. I must say though that I have been in the woods and all, and so far all is still 100% perfect. Although...I would certainly not use a a sharp tool and try to scratch the paint off because the paint does not penetrate the plastics, it is held on the plastics by bonding to he Adhesion Promoter...like on your car for example....you can scratch the paint off. Really excessive warping of the fenders might ( maybe) crack the paint but so far it hasn't on mine

The video was made 2 yrs ago. I just sold my ATV last May ( 2020) . The buyer was amazed how good the paint job was. I mean...it was a 2002 Polaris 500. Of course if you ride in heavy wooded areas and keep scrapping it with branches, it will damage the paint but if you ride on normal cleared trails, the paint will last for years

If your keeping it the same color then restoring the natural plastic would have been about the same amount of work, a bit more sanding then polishing and your there.
@refugeinc.1595 жыл бұрын
Should have just continued wet sanding, and then buff. Would have looked brand new, and won't chip off eventually like paint will.

By using 800 grit your paint will only last 12 to 18 months max. 400 grit is were you want to start...
@rotorway1336 жыл бұрын
Hum.....the finer the grit, the less marks it leaves behind. Besides.....the goal is to dull the surface so the Adhesion Promoter bonds well

But do body shops use spray can paint to paint plastics? That surprises me if they do because for most of a professionals painting they use high end two part automotive paint that you have to mix and has hardener etc in it.?.?.?

Stopped by just to tell people. NEVER paint your freaking plastics. NEVER, it is absolutely the dumbest thing you can do to any parts on an atv or dirt bike. These machines are designed to go through hell and paint is not. No amount of prep and work will make your paint job last. In absolutely no time at all your paint job will look the same. If you want a different color quit being cheap and save for plastics. If you want to restore them, instead of paint use a razor blade lightly shave the plastic down in areas with deep gouges, return with 400 grit sand paper (WET), heat with heat gun, return with 800 grit (WET), heat with heat gun, return with 1000 grit, heat with heat gun, polish with a Clean and Dry polish wheel. You will have brand new looking plastics. NO heat gun? no worries, steal your moms hair dryer while she isnt home, takes a lot longer than a heat gun but you will get rid of the white spots and get your color back regardless

Aw horseshit buddy… How much off roading do you actually do? Apparently, not enough than you realize the need for such a procedure, is absolutely perfect if you’re rock crawling, muddying, bashing, etc. When you get a scratch…you pull out the flat, camo, fizz bomb …touch it up…and it looks new again… I guess if you own a trailer queen, or you’re one of those suburban kids who thinks he goes four wheeling , but really rides subdivision gravel roads and other BS. I’m 52…I own 2 jeeps…the 78’? Black , flat, fizzbombed like a bitch…just like the 2 quads we use to hunt… For fucks sake man…I’m not entering car shows… Your comment? Not the dumbest for sure… Just the most misguided…you sound like one of those little boys driving those riceburner cars who think they’re race car drivers… You sure as hell ain’t from the country….we use duct tape and spray paint all the time….we have to.. We actually USE our shit….tear it up…fix it/touch it up…. Then we do it all over again… Fuck, you’re a millennial aren’t you?

@@ricknelson2214 I’m gonna let you in on a secret. Don’t you go sharing it 🤣. Take all your plastics including the red one and run them in yellow rit dye. The red one will take many many times to dye out yellow but will eventually have the right hue. I will say it again, NEVER paint plastics
