WOW, as usual, great job. I tried to get my former son-in-law to restore my trailer. He could only take it apart. After the ugly divorce, it was gone. I missed your succinct words, but the text words were great!!! Thx

I think you're the best at making KZbin videos about restoring or fixing things.. no unneeded nonsense thank God.and you do not talk trash about what someone may have done to something before you got it... I'm trying to say is thank God there's decent guys like you to watch. And thank. For I have enjoyed all your videos. And even learned a few things. and for that I think you.

Great video. I would suggest that you seal the plywood end grain to prevent soaking up moisture. Turned out nice.

Yeah, I'm confused as to why go to so much effort to make it nice and then leave the underside exposed. When I saw it being painted with stonechip I thought that it was the underside, but no...

Excellent restoration. The steel held up well. Nice size trailer, bigger than the ones I see these days. I love the design. Having the sides drop down adds a lot of functionality. Well done. Dave.

I wasn't shocked to see the marine ply being the major cost in that restoration!

Turned out nice, but I would paint the underside of the side panels and tailgate, otherwise moisture will get in.

Looking sharp especially the chrome powder coat looks good. Also did you use stainless hardware? Looks like it Only couple things I would add would be grease fitting for the tilt mechanism, stain the edges and run a bead of decent outdoor caulk around the floor so water cant seep between the angle iron and the wood.
@texleeger89732 жыл бұрын
Here in Maine, we'd save those wood sides for another project. Perfectly useable.
@WiltedSnausage2072 жыл бұрын
Coat of paint and run the hardware through the wire wheel and it might as well be fresh from the lumber isle
@DanKoning7772 жыл бұрын
Well, that explains Maines support for "leave our troops behind" Biden then doesn't it, not to mention the last eight elections through the 80s where Maine has cast its vote for corruption; I mean democrats.

Nice trailer but a few mistakes along the way others can learn from and avoid: 1) Seal endgrain of plywood especially the way you used it. 2) When affixing bolts drill through using correct size drill bit from both sides (have a pilot hole) to avoid tearout like @14:30 3) Pre-drill when screwing into endgrain like when affixing top rails at the end. 4) It's quicker and you get a better finish to roll lengthways not crossways for paint or stain. An extension handle helps as well so you don't have to walk around the large piece and use different angles - you can be straight and parallel with strokes / rolls. Evapo-rust can be re-used so that dirty pan liquid can be used for pre-soaking on the next project, a fine filter helps as well.

Nicely done and a pleasure to watch. The "new" trailer is not only aesthetically pleasing but also useful. I especially like the chrome powder coat treatment of the hinges.
@josecondemarin95862 жыл бұрын
The trailer look very poorly at the beginning, it looks better now. I would seal the bottom of the wood on the trailer to prevent rotting the wood including the edges even though the top edges got some aluminum protection. Also I would make sure I had grease zerts for any moving hinges. Other than that the trailer looks really good. Stay safe and healthy thanks 😊

Maybe install some tie downs for ratchet straps and like other people said seal the end grain of your plywood so it doesn't rot. You spent a lot of money on this project so you gotta protect it. Nice job! 🇺🇲

You need to include all sides of the boards when you paint to keep the wood in good shape longer. Love the colors you have chosen. I think you .should’ve painted the bottom side of the floor board water does a lot of damage to wood!. It’s beautiful you did a great job. Thank you 👍🏼👏🏼👏🏼🌵

An outstanding job, sir, just one last feature I suggest you add. Run a flat-head bolt through the hole at the top of the latch lever, & screw on a short "D" handle. It gives far better purchase, & is much needed, because the force required to release the latch will increase with the amount of weight in the bed, especially weight aft of the axle. It also helps if you choose to install a stiffer latch spring, which prevents accidental releases that can occur if the trailer bounces when moving over rough terrain. Overall, a very nice rescue, & if it performs as well as it looks, it will give you a lifetime of faithful service.

Those hinges on the sides are pretty slick, nicer than my Harbor Freight "shove a 2x4 in this pocket" things that are too small to hold a 2x4 post without planing it down. Every time I see one of your videos it makes me want to get powder coating equipment, even though the "aerosol overhaul" is sufficient for most of my needs.

Nice job! You're quickly becoming one of my favorite channels. May I offer a couple of suggestions? You covered up most of the end grain in the marine plywood but also left a lot exposed. It will wick moisture in and eventually fail, marine grade or not. Maybe use one of the iron on veneers? Also, and this is trivial, but I'd love to see you get a cordless impact to save you from the constant use of a ratchet. Again, minor. Looking forward to your next project!

I agree covering up the edges. I rip 1/4” strips of hardwood and glue it on (Titebond 3 is probably the best for this application), clamping it overnight. If you can get white oak for the strips, it would be great, long lasting. Most woodworkers, especially boat builders, would have scraps you could get for free.

I love restoring things too, just got done restoring a old trailer myself. It was an old John Deere trailer from the 70’s (I think). Pretty much the same trailer except mine is all metal. Took me about 5 months to do mainly because I’m lazy but it came out like brand new. I painted the outside in the traditional green but I did the inside in truck bed coating then painted it green over the coating. A friend of mine from school who lives on a farm bought it from me about a month ago and he’s been using it every single day.

New inner tubes and those old tyres will be good to go. Excellent job. I think I would have plated the edges of the plywood tailgate to stop splintering but hey, a new tailgate every now and again isn't an issue. I might have gone for the yellow/ green John Deere colour scheme. Would have made an awesome combo.

Along with suggestions from "johan", which are good ones, I'd add a bead of good caulking under the aluminum trim pieces, the edge of the plywood is like a straw with the ply's that are end grain. As it is now, it'll trap moisture and not let it dry out. That trailer is definitely worth the restoration, nicely done.

Great work, looks brand new! I really enjoy your FS videos, and now I found this channel which is amazing. I saw you used a lot of locking-washers and some locking nuts, you should try out the Nordlock washers. I'm a mechanic in subsea equpiment/oil, and we've started using them instead of the locking washers and nuts. They're quite expencive, but can be re-used and they work much better than the other alternatives out there. I put some on the cowling on a KTM I used to have. The KTM's vibrate like crazy so I kept loosing the bolts holding them, untill I put the Nordlock on, never lost a bolt again.
