When you look around and see the appalling things including unnecessary demolition done to other period buildings by ill-informed or un-caring people, your wonderful approach is a revelation.

many years ago in the early youtube days, I saw a russian video where they used a giant burning stick to start a diesel that had sat for many many years. Some time later, I was working at a factory and we had a very old clark diesel forklift that someone had cut the block heater cord to, so there was no way to keep her warm. We desperately needed her to start one day, and I remembered that video. I grabbed a propane torch, disconnected the air cleaner at the intake, and shoved the torch down her throat. She fired up after just a couple revolutions. Electrician here from Tennessee. Glad to be here! Can't wait to see the wall when it's finished!

Back in the day when I was a gardener on a big country estate, they had a Thwaites dumper on a handle start. Stupidly I'd shown that I could start it, so they used to come and fetch me every time. It was a battle of wills. Amazing feeling when it finally coughs into life and the red mist can finally dissipate 😆

Dead easy way to cold start any Diesel....First boil a full kettle of water then with care slowly pour it over the injector(s) and the fuel line(s) to warm them up. Then crank it over. Instant start. It will work on any small single Diesel engine. Even a 4cyl car. Pour it with care to warm up the said parts to warm and preheat the Diesel within these parts and to crack the Diesel viscosity and to even warm the head to aid in an easy start. Even in mental low temps and snow and ice on the floor so to speak. I have done this trick since the late 80s. Works every time. I was shown this trick by a farmer when I lived in Cornwall. Thanks for posting....

I totally understand the consideration of adding a new chapter to the building. It is always complicated to remove old things such as plaster because you remove old memories. But I did the same thing in my 150 year old house anyway. Now it is almost ready again to last another 150 years.

Tip to get your mixer started in the cold, hold your blow torch over your air inlet when cranking, or get someone else to, works a treat when diesel engines don't want to start in the cold.

Really love the care and attention your giving to the building, can't imagine what would have happened if it had been anyone else. They would have probably covered the internal walls with pva, put up a wooden frame then covered it with plasterboard so it looked sleek. As someone who loves these old buildings Inam really glad that this one is being really cared for and yes youvare putting a modern stamp on it, but your not removing its soul. 👍

Am enjoying your videos, thank you. It is sad, to destroy what has gone before, very sad. But, sometimes, it is necessary to move forward & keep life in flux. The most important thing I have learned, when working on old historic buildings, is to document your findings & the process, with pictures & your thoughts, whilst doing it - building archeology, if you like. You are doing that, with these videos & the fact that you analysed the plaster, with the mention of horse hair etc etc, is a good thing. Keep some samples, if you can….a little ‘house box’ with tangible evidence & artefacts which you can store away somewhere. I did exactly this, with my Victorian house, with all sorts of things, from pottery found in the garden, to old wallpaper. In my work too, I very carefully, document my projects & explain how I went about it, what materials I used & why. The other thing, when I was restoring my Victorian home, I also added snapshots of our times. For example; The newspapers dated 31st December 1999 & The World Trade Centre ‘terrorist’ attack of the twin towers newspaper. I stuffed one partition wall with old trade journals of The Painting & Decorating Association, an obituary of my late wife with photos & all sorts of ‘treasures’ that someone else will find one day after I am gone. When I was working as a decorator , it was tradition to sign the walls & date them, before hanging paper. I would draw round my hand, sign & date it , with how many rolls it took. Also, becasue I did carpentry too, restoring sash windows, II would always sign the back of the sash pocket with my name, date, my trade & my town that I lived in. I loved uncovering names & history, from those who came before me.

You need to take that cover off that pull start and see if it's got a nut/bolt on there. If it does get the same size socket for your drill and give that a try. It will start alot easier especially in the winters. You can thank me later.

Renoing buildings is a part of life kid been happening for hundreds of years, progress is what it is seen grafitti under wooden walls calling the owner all kinds of things, they built them to outlive the owner. Youve made a blight a creative work kid, move on youve saved a bit of the area, some care some dont. It is what it is.🙂

i have something written on my shed wall (too dark to check as I write about imperfectly perfect, something I wrote to remind myself where I want to get to with my painting last year, I understand totally what you mean when you described that wall. it must have been a really difficult decision to hack off that beautiful wall but like most things in this world things are temporary and what replaces them is neither better or worse just different and if there is a good reason to replace then that's what must happen. i lived my first 27 years in the socialist republic of West Yorkshire (lofthouse), there is no finer accent. I wish you well on your continuing journey through 2025 and keep up the damn good work.

Not all history is worth saving, sometimes its a balance and sometimes you just need to weigh up a theoretical historical value over modern real life value and heating costs... In reality its only a paint finish that "could" be replicated complete with faux patina over modern insulated surface. However hearing your closing thoughts on it this cynical old Jock now understand your heartache... but Im pretty sure you can reuse the old plaster in the new plaster and bring a lot of the old back with the new because youve done that before. Stay safe and stay strong, see you next time
