The funniest part of this is that you are basically in one spot (the market square by the Blaak station). It is the art district (Rotterdam is famous for having art scatterred all over the city - like the huge Picasso statue and a Henry Moore relief on a random wall close to central station - it also has some of the best art museums in the Netherlands). One of the most famous art academies is across the street from the cube building. The minions building is the public library. Once a week they have a big market there with several vintage stalls. You can find some pretty cool treasures. I love Rotterdam.

Rotterdam is much more new than most other Dutch cities, as it was completely flattened during the war, and so was rebuilt and therefor had more weird and quirky architecture they could experiment with when building up the city since then. Still kinda weird I agree.

The funny thing about this is that they could have just rebuilt the city after the Americans mistakingly bombed the city in WW2. The city council decided however that ( in making the best of a bad situation) they had now gained a 'clean sheet' to turn Rotterdam into a modern city that represented the modern age. They envisioned the city as an American city like New York (lots of fancy high-rise buildings) and they still try to hold on to this philosophy today. The population of Rotterdam mostly hated the idea, but they went through with it anyway and now this is the result... Worst looking city in the Netherlands by far in my opinion, because you can hardly see any of towns history nowadays..

Being born and raised in this anarcho architect's playground of a city has actually spurred a fascination with architecture within me. And then at the city scale, keeping the architectural style and look of each individual city in harmony with the surrounding buildings to create a coherent whole, in particular. A city has a good sense of coherence, order and character when all buildings roughly stay within the same, relatively limited selection of shapes, structures and colors. Jerusalem is a great example. Any new buildings, pavements & structures that have been added to the city, have been built with the very same amber-reddish stones that the historic center and ancient structures and walls have been built with, to keep the uniform Jerusalem colorscheme intact. Often the same type of walls and arches have been used in newly constructed parts of the city too. This keeps the unique style of the city intact, gives it a sense of cohesion and conserves it's character. The old city of Akko (Acra) is similar in it's uniformity and cohesion. Rome and Athens are the same in that respect. White marble plazas and stairways, buildings, structures..etc. All with the same typical collumns, archways, roofstructures..etc. From a distance, all the buildings of the city seem to merge into 1 megastructure with roughly the same colorscheme, shapes and style.

Some building are so ugly in Rotterdam cause of ww2 They were build in the 50’s so ugly are They But this is a bit better 😅😅😅 I have been there cause Im Dutch But Amsterdam did’nt got as much damage in ww2 as Rotterdam so Amsterdams het old buildings are much better so dont be mean to Rotterdam its all cause of ww2 😢😢😢😢
