Se trata de una "Santa Popular" (y de corte marcadamente Antinómico) que es objeto de reverencia religiosa por parte de grupos sociales que viven al margen o fuera de la Ley. Está asociada al proceso de la Muerte misma, así como a la obtención de favores y protección a sus devotos. Propiamente, se trata de un "New Religious Movement" en toda regla, nacido en el contexto del "Folk Catholicism" de México.
