I didn’t have high hopes for Rouen, really. I had previously visited Amiens, and aside from the spared, toy-townesque St. Leu quarter (and, of course, the glorious cathedral), was underwhelmed somewhat by the rest of that town. Knowing that Rouen had been similarly battered in several wars I wasn’t expecting much. But, dear reader, I’m happy to report that of all France’s war-blasted northern cities, Rouen is my favourite. Mercifully, they opted not to rebuild the place in the brutalist/functionalist manner of a Le Havre or a Rotterdam, instead choosing to (sympathetically) rebuild the core of the town in a faithful reconstruction of what was. On the whole, it’s a triumph. The cathedral’s facade still blows you away as you turn the corner into the unassuming square it faces. The half-timbered rebuilds look medieval enough and lived-in enough to more than pass muster. Now, if they could only sort out the barren wasteland expanses by the river, then Rouen would *really* make the visitor swoon.

Thank you for your kind comment about my hometown. Rouen was badly damaged at around 50%, a bit like Berlin during WW2. Therefore, it is a mix of old and new, just like the German capital, albeit on a much smaller scale of course. Between the Seine and the Cathedral, everything was bombed to the ground (you can find pictures documenting this online). To my knowledge, most if not all medieval buildings on the right bank in the city center that you see today are authentic, but they have been restored and well-maintained to this day. Le Havre was totally destroyed at the end of the war (despite being devoid of German army at the time of the aerial bombing btw) more like Rotterdam or Hamburg, and thus there was not much of a choice other than to rebuild it from scratch, hence the post-war brutal(ist) style that locals themselves long loathed before UNESCO decided to praise it. If you noticed the shrapnel damage on the front/street side of the Courthouse, the holes were kept on purpose as a reminder, again in the same spirit as the famous Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church in (former West) Berlin.

Can you tell me the names of few French daily newspapers in Rouen? Are English dailies available there as well? If yes, can you give me a few names of those as well? I really need them. Thank you.

That's in interesting way of putting. Except one important fact. Although the Norman and Plantagenet Kings of England were French Peers (as Dukes of Normandy and then Dukes of Aquitaine) they were also of course descended from the House of Wessex, and were primarily accepted as Kings of England first by the Witan and then by Parliament. Their rule was not automatic. Edward II was reminded of this in 1327. And the Coronation Oath cemented this principle in stone.

Plus they had all the spears, swords, and arrows, and willingness to kill their opponents. That is the various royalty of Europe were just warlords willing to kick back some gold to the Church. It’s absurd to think of them as otherwise.
