Nice, the weather that day was a little off of predicted. I was able to get in some pattern work in between the rain at KLPR in the late afternoon.

Years ago I was a UPS delivery driver in NJ. One of my customers was a guy named James (JIM) Roberts. He built a Rutan Long EZ in his garage that I delivered some of the parts for. He also built a Laser 200 Aerobatic airplane that was basically a twin to his friend Leo Loudenslager's plane that he won many American championships and a world championship with. I was promised a ride in the Long EZ but never had a chance to make that happen. I did get a chance to see it fly at the Sussex County Air Show though. He could fly the heck out of that airplane.

I've been waiting for that landing, since your first video. Congratulations, and looking forward to many more!

Great video. Sure glad YOU did the editing. #1 reason for holding the nose off: There's not much rubber on the tire itself #2 Aerodynamic braking #3 It's lot fun flying the canard to touchdown. #4, and the most impotant reason, it looks cooler than shit.

Forgive my ignorance but watching you and others take off it looks and sounds as if the Cozy is underpowered. What engine are you using? I was aware the takeoff roll is longer but compared to my 182 you use a lot of runway. No shade, just curious. Friend is based at I69 and I've landed there more times than I can count. I'm based at KTZR. The airport you intended to overfly is "Nerk" or Newark, OH. I think I've landed at Medina twice but it's been awhile!
@CanardBoulevard2 ай бұрын
The Cozy is designed for (and mine has) an IO-360, producing 180 hp. That's a good power for this airplane. At 200 hp you would find yourself bumping up against Vne (190 KIAS) at lower altitudes at high power settings. The long takeoff runs are not from a lack of power - it's due to two things: - No propwash over a horizontal stabilizer means you can't "force" rotate the main wing before it's ready to fly, like you would do in your 182 during a soft field takeoff. The only way to rotate the main wing is to gain enough airspeed that the canard generates enough lift to lift the front of the airplane up. - The canard is designed to have high wing loading to ensure it stalls before the main wing. This means you need a lot of airspeed in order to get it flying - and until it is flying and lifts the nose, the angle of attack of the main wing will not be enough to generate sufficient lift to take off. So basically you have to sit on the runway and accelerate to between 70-80 kts (depending on weight and CG) before the nose will come off and rotate the main wing. In addition, constant speed props are really not great on canards (too heavy, too much FOD), so most of us have cruise props to get our high speed cruises. This means our ground acceleration is not fantastic.

31:30 good reason why you shouldn't line up at uncontrolled fields until the landing traffic is visually clear or announces clear. It's just not worth it

Scott - while Rough River is one of the three largest Canard Fly-Ins each year, it's only the largest about 1/2 of the years. The other years, either the Kanab, UT fly-in or the Columbia, CA fly-in are larger. We had 35 - 40 canards at Kanab this year, and there are usually 25 - 35. Columbia usually gets 20 - 35 canards. So the title of the video should be "One of The...." 🙂 Moving forward, RR will only have to compete with Kanab, as the organizer of the Columbia Fly-In is retiring from further organizing, so unless someone else picks up the reins, it's deceased.

Word of advice from a professional weatherman. Never try to go between two areas of Convective cloud. You’re looking for trouble because this stuff builds quickly and you can get caught. Glad this flight worked out for you.
@CanardBoulevard2 ай бұрын
The convection was limited to the larger area to the west - I had been watching, and the area to the east had split off and was dissipating, which is VERY common for a front to do when moving through this area. I was expecting that area would continue to dissipate, and I would get in front of the convection before it moved through. However, nature laughs at our plans, and after I took off, the dissipating area instead started to regenerate, and then rejoined the main convective area - so that's when I made the decision to land and wait it out. Having onboard NEXRAD is such a gift - newer pilots today don't know how good they have it!

Random question,... what choices of fuel is generally available at airports? For instance if you have an automobile based engine, is the right fuel available?
@CanardBoulevard2 ай бұрын
Generally airports will have 100LL and Jet-A. I hear that there are airports that have ethanol-free auto gas, but I have never come across one. Most of the Rotax guys I see, bring their own gas in giant racing jerrycans. Either that, or they use 100LL and change the oil more often (and plugs).

This video was suggested on the YT homepage and I enjoyed the ride. How do I find out when the rough river canard meetup happens in 2025?
@CanardBoulevard2 ай бұрын
Thanks for coming along for the ride (and for subscribing!). It is normally the third week of September, although this year it was delayed by two weeks because of the hurricane.

Its interesting to see how your speed increases as the fuel load burns down.
@CanardBoulevard2 ай бұрын
Not really...the gradual speed change you see is in groundspeed, and it's mostly because the headwinds/tailwinds change over time. My indicated airspeed changes a bit as I burn fuel, but not tremendously.

Why if you put vortex generators on the main wing, do you need them on the canard? Vortex generators will make the stall speed lower for the main wing, which is good. Without VGs on the canard, than you are assured the canard will stall before the main.
@CanardBoulevard2 ай бұрын
Then what is the benefit of having them at all? Putting them on just the main wing alone adds a tiny bit of drag, with absolutely no benefit - the main wing will still never stall, because the canard will stall first. However...putting them on the canard means your overall stall speed decreases. BUT if you put them on the canard, then you must also put them on the main wing, to ensure you still never stall the main wing before the canard.

Forgive my ignorance, but what percentage of the canard planes do have variable pitch propellers, on your "Fast landing" that would have been nice to use the engine to slow down the plane" I repeat, I honestly don't know the complexity of that type of propeller... but it would sure make a huge difference...
@geckoinc992 ай бұрын
Variable pitch props are fairly heavy and weight in the back of the plane is typically where we don’t want it for CG reasons. Only a few have installed them. There’s also the issue of damage from debris kicked up by the front tire and those props are much more expensive.
@CanardBoulevard2 ай бұрын
I would LOVE to have a constant speed prop. But we are already tail-heavy. My prop weighs about 20 lbs, a constant-speed prop could be 2-3 times that, right at the worst place it could possibly be. Plus the additional weight of a prop governor. Lastly, we kick a lot of stuff up through our prop. Constant speed props are REALLY expensive (like 4 times as much), so having to repair a prop nick from a kicked-up stone on a $20,000 prop...not so big a fan.

A Cozy is basically a widened Long EZ, with four seats instead of two, and a bigger engine.

When I came to know your channel I had been looking at Part 103 Ultra-light planes & the Canard jumped out but I'm glad I stopped to sub up here. Is the Sea-Rey float plane considered a Part 103 or is it Experimental? I ask this as if I know what I'm talking about but I don't.... merely trying to better understand what can be complicated, thankfully I can understand you better than other channels. Very cool show & these planes look so small. peace & GB
@CanardBoulevard2 ай бұрын
It was originally an experimental, but the later versions I believe were certified as LSA. Definitely too heavy & fast for part 103 (plus it has two seats).

I'm kinda getting up there in age but find myself "dreaming" about flying..... lol, I do have medical that would keep me from any Licensed Certifications so I find myself entertaining the idea by watching the light 103 planes & You. Since your video popped into my feed, I'm glad to get to watch you fly. I find myself wondering how other pilots think about the Canard, do they like it or think differently of it? Great "thumb nail" seeing all of the planes together. peace & GB

Why is it that canards have issues in the rain? I head you cant or should not fly a Long EZ in the rain. Have other canards fixed this issue?
@geckoinc992 ай бұрын
The issue is some canard wings will pitch down in rain due to water disrupting the flow. It’s not that it can’t fly in rain but rather it can change the flight characteristics. The Cozy uses a Roncz canard which is less susceptible to this issue.
@josephalberta11452 ай бұрын
@@geckoinc99 Thanks for the response. I got a fixed wing license and never had issues in cessnas or a viking. I got 8000 hours in Helicopters and once again I never had issues even in heavy rain. I only heard about this on the canards. I appreciate the explanation.

My LEZ has a GU canard and if you sand them with 400 grit in the direction of travel it really mitigates the trim change in rain a lot. It makes the canard paint look dull tho. Mine has very little trim change in rain as a result
@CanardBoulevard2 ай бұрын
ALL airfoils will lose some lift when contaminated by rain (bugs, dirt, ice), including your Cessna. The difference is that the canard is heavily loaded by design, so when it gets some rain contamination, it doesn't have a lot of margin left, so when it loses some lift, the nose dips.
