4:27 just wondering why the status LED being illuminated all the time that the charger is connected to the battery, wasn't something that was apparent to you, without asking the manufacturer? Is the LED on the charger but the charger is located in the nose, where you've never been able to see the LED? Is the LED only very dim in this condition, so you hadn't noticed it during bench testing, before you'd installed it, where it then couldn't be seen. Or maybe the charger was already installed on the aircraft when you bought it? (And it's installed where you can't see it). Is the LED on a PCB internal to the charger, so it isn't visible to the user. I was initially thinking this might be an LED that's on an internal circuit board, for manufacturing test purposes and their solution was going to be that they supplied you with a charger where they had removed or otherwise disabled that internal LED. (Or a story that they couldn't do that modification because it's an aviation certified charger). I'm guessing this is an LED that's visible to the user (but perhaps not where you could easily see it) and you wouldn't want it removed/disabled as it's potentially of use to you.
@CanardBoulevard
@CanardBoulevard 3 күн бұрын
It was way up in the nose, so not visible unless you crawled under the panel and looked up to the very front. I could have disabled it...? But without the schematic, I wouldn't want to modify the circuit blindly - you never know what decisions the designer made. Were they depending on current flowing through that LED for a voltage comparator to operate? That kind of thing. In the end, I just decided my own design would work fine, and then I knew exactly how it works (and how to fix it if it doesn't).

@CanardBoulevard probably a wise move, you just never know… I was tracing out the schematic for my electric shower recently. The 8 LEDs were in series with the power to the water control solenoid, as a way to drop some of the mains voltage. You just never know what other vital function an LED might have!

The voltage drop on diodes does drop with current, so eventually it would charge to the desired voltage. Still gets hot though.

Lithium batteries have a monitoring system built into them. They will go to "sleep" if they're not being used for so long. Usually you have to put a load on them for a few second to "wake them up" and then give them a few minutes to "warm up", or sometimes they'll have a button to wake them up. I'm pretty sure this applies to most if not all Lithium batteries in production at this time. We use them in forklfts, and we are constantly dealing with customers charging them (or not charging them) correctly. Keep up the awesome videos! I've been here since video #1! SUBSCRIBED TOO! LoL

Something I noticed with the Earthx is that when it is charged, it isolates the cells and unless the BMC sees a higher voltage (~15 volt) spike, won't absorb noise like a lead acid battery does. I've added a few more electrolytic and Mylar caps at noise sources (electric fuel pumps, trim motors, alternator, transponder power source) to reduce noise.
@CanardBoulevard
@CanardBoulevard 4 күн бұрын
Interesting - I do hear noise in my headset from the speed brake actuator (which I like - lets me know it's working) and transponder (which I don't like). I could definitely put an electrolytic near the transponder to smooth that out, I think - unless it's radiated RF, which is possible.

4:05 "22mA" I was just waiting for you to say an LED was on! Very much like what happened with me charging a lithium device from a car 12V/USB charger. I've gone through the details of the subsequent fire on here before but what I think caused it was that the (very cheap) USB device being charged, must have been putting, say 4V back to the charger when the car 12V was off. Guess what - that was dimly lighting the charger LED for the next 24 hours before I next used the car. I half consciously noticed the dim LED as I started the car but thought I was probably mistaken & didn't register what the consequences would be. The LiPo battery was about 200mAh and only partially charged so after 24hours it was no doubt below 3V (and such a cheap device that it didn't prevent that discharge and didn't protect it from being charged from that low voltage). About 10 minutes into the next car journey the LiPo battery was on fire, red/white hot, ejecting a jet of flame and thick white smoke! Your battery isolated itself preventing it from discharging to a critically low level. Hopefully we can depend on that being the difference between the safety of a $2 device and a $200 device. I was impressed with a notebook battery pack that I dismantled. As well as the FETs that you'd expect it to have, to isolate the battery in various voltage/current conditions (may have even had 2 FETs in series so they'd both need to be shorted to prevent isolation). It also has a _fuse of last resort_ that has a separate heating element that can be used to blow the fuse! (Low melting point alloy).
@CanardBoulevard
@CanardBoulevard 4 күн бұрын
That's a really good point - the EarthX batteries have multiple failsafe systems in them, as they are intended to be run in an airplane, and can NOT fail or spurt flame, overcharge, etc. - basically, they are designed so you can put any voltage or load into/out of them (within reason) and they will just take it, shut down, or whatever - without failing catastrophically. So many cheap lithium batteries coming from China with NO protection of any kind, it really is scary to think how many of those things we have in our homes and vehicles, in our pockets, in our EARS....

@@berniebrown9115 I "fixed" it by disabling the manifold pressure sensor on the electronic ignition. This disables the timing advance, and fixes it at 25 BTDC, just like the magneto. So it works...but I lose all the benefits of having timing advance available on the electronic ignition (better fuel economy, more power). They don't make a replacement MAP sensor anymore for the old system, so the only way to get a working electronic ignition again was to replace the whole system.

Having watched Savvy Aviation videos, they recommend a IRAN rather than overhaul unless you are at the engine overhaul stage also. I have also read that pilots are moving towards electronic ignition for both sides with one being a E-mag since it has the built-in alternator to power the spark and you don't have to deal with aviation sparkplugs. Nonetheless, enjoy your videos!
@CanardBoulevard
@CanardBoulevard 4 күн бұрын
I should have clarified - it's going for an inspection, if they find anything worn or out of spec, those components will be replaced. So not technically an overhaul. I considered replacing the magneto with another electronic ignition - but the E-Mag has an absolutely dismal failure record on canard pushers, which means I would have to create a whole separate bus with a separate battery for the second electronic ignition for redundancy, isolated charging circuitry, and more. Maybe sometime in the future? For now, I'll just put the magneto back on there.

It's extremely simple - two AOD4185 MOSFETs in parallel (for load and redundancy). They are never partially biased, always full on or full off, so no heatsinks required. They're rated for 40A each, and in my application the most it would pull is 10 amps. They are driven by a simple comparator. 5 components in total!

That is one interesting looking motor, Lycoming I think you said it was. It looks like a very long stroke on the rods if I am describing it correctly. Very clean in there, no signs oil weep. As curiosity, how much oil for a change, brand and viscosity? Do you need to overhaul the mag periodically, or is there some defect?
@CanardBoulevard
@CanardBoulevard 4 күн бұрын
It's a Lycoming IO-360, probably one of the most common general aviation engines there is. There's definitely oil seeping out in places - in aviation, if it's not leaking oil, that means it's empty. :) I use Aeroshell 15W50. The magneto has an inspection requirement every 500 flight hours.

I wonder if there’s some difference for what you want out of ownership and also how much more often you CAN actually fly with your own airplane. My goal when I earned my PPL was to fly a minimum of twice a month, but what I’ve quickly found is that I manage more like once a month at best because if weather or maintenance cancels my scheduled rental I have to book another week out. Both airports I rent from are 45 minutes away so flying has to be a planned day, not an impulse. Sometimes I get lucky and can get a plane on short notice on a nice day where I actually have time, but overall I’m not flying nearly as much as I want. I have no interest in super capable cross country machines, I fly for the sheer feel and love of it, so I’m seriously considering getting an old taildragger for under 30k. I could base that at the field 5 minutes from my house and with that kind of access I would probably fly multiple times a week because I could just hop in the plane and hit the circuit (mastering a tailwheel seems to be a lifelong pursuit) or fly down the beach. I could go up on work days to de-stress. That’s the dream for me. I think it should be possible to keep annual costs to own and fly a plane like that under 10k a year.
