It will make a good boat/rope knife, very handy in camp too. I picked up one of the original glow series trappers and it still makes me smile.

I’m all for knife handles that glow in the dark. They are MUCH easier to find when you’re camping or on a nighttime nature walk.

A nice-looking handle and that "chevy type" shield is one of few designs that looks good on a side, thanks for showing it.

I agree about the "bow tie" shield. It looks good running up and down a knife. No shield is also a good look.

You're right about the name. Half Hawk sounds like the name of an intrepid frontier Indian scout. Loom fixer sounds like the nickname of the weird guy at the factory that nobody wants to eat lunch with.

Thanks. It's really a quite practical knife. Just goes to show sometimes it is better to copy than try to make something new for the sake of making something new!

Such a cool pattern! I like the RR blades the best when they don't have a swedge. Thanks very much for the look at this one, my friend!
@KnifeChatswithTobias Жыл бұрын
Agreed. A swedge would add nothing to this knife other than a cosmetic difference

👍Glow in the dark is fun! Sorry your box doesn’t glow. I have a book, “The Witch of Lime Street,” about Harry Houdini vs Margery, which has glowing ink on the dust cover. Hawkbill trivia: the most HEAVY duty hook knife I know of is The Klein Lineman’s Skinning Knife, with its heavy plastic handle (not a folder) and big wire loop on the pommel end. Back when vehicle rescue was more likely to involve windshields set in rubber gaskets instead of mastic, we kept a hooked “linoleum knife” in the kit. That ram’s foot looks like a heck of a working blade. Although I once carried a Stockman with sheepfoot blade, I’ve just never made the jump to a straight edge for EDC (I do admire RR’s Wharncliffe blade pocket knife with denim micarta scales).

I have a Coal Miner Half Hawk model, and I like the pattern and for the price, they are a good bargain. I have some Halkbills with serrated edges and they work great for plastic film, webbing and rope. Glow in the dark covers are a cool idea.

The glow in the dark handles would make that one very resistant to loss. I recently picked up a half hawk in faded blue jeans Micarta, and I really like it. Thanks for showing this one; I hope to add one to my collection!

The single blade versions are sold over here by some brands as boatknife or ropeknife, most times with an anchor shield. The Moonglow or glow has some nostalgia to me, thinking of my old alarmclock. Wind it up every day and you could tell the time all night. To be effective it has to have some period of light on it, so may even not be the best choice at camping for that reason, would do great on the nightstand though. Maybe you want to peel an apple at night! Okay it just looks cool. Thank you for the review Tobias.

Good After noon Tobias. I really love you review of the Rough Ryder Glow series. Taking the time to show the strength of the Glow over time was top shelf and just the information I was looking for. You review was particularly important to me as I was thinking to order one for my Family First Aid Kit. I figured a Glowing Knife would be a great Idea. After watching all of your reviews of the Glow series, I ordered the RR2494 Rough Ryder Half Hawk Glowing folding Knife for my First Aid Kit as the rounded tip of the Rams foot blade would be the safe choice for cutting clothing with out causing injury to the patient. Great Job Tobias, Thank you.

Thanks. I just order a bunch more glow knives over the weekend. I really am a sucker for glow in the dark stuff. Must be the little kid in me.

Great review, as usual. I like half hawks. I’m also a big fan of whittlers (and wharncliff blades), and I recently picked up a RR Reserve “dude” whittler. I love everything about this knife, including the coffin-shaped handle, which is reminiscent of a traditional Bowie knife - which is semi-sacred to us Texans. I would love to see you review the dude whittler, as I really respect your opinions. If you’ve already reviewed it, I missed it.

The red sawcut bone halfhawk RR recently released does have only the half hawk and no pen blade but it also has a bolster lock. I own that one and the blade and red sawcut bone is nice but not sure I am a fan of the bolster lock. Also it has the “R” bolster.
@kellydiver Жыл бұрын
I hate the R bolsters. I don’t buy them anymore.
@n8ram413 Жыл бұрын
@@kellydiver I own quite a few of them with the R bolster which but there’s only a handful of them that actually look good. They usually look all messed up from the pin in the center of the R which has caused me to dislike them as well.

The Glow I have is a Sodbuster. Is a loom fixer what we might call a tackler? Pruners are a genre that’s very much collected here, particularly those by Saynor.
@KnifeChatswithTobias Жыл бұрын
I’ll need to check out Saynor. Tackler? Is that a term used by sailors for a knife used with work on the lines for tacking a sailboat? I’ve just alway heard Rope knife.

Don't you ou have a single blade half hawk with a black wooden handle and an anchor shield/inlay. I think SMKW sold them as a trio set of knives?

Yes I do indeed and it was sold as a Rope Knife, not a Half Hawk under the SMKW house brand "Canon"
