Rough-turning bowls is one of Sam's favorite approaches in woodturning. He rough-turns a nice piece of Koa wood to about 7/8" wall thickness-he then shows how he dries the bowl blank by storing it in shavings within a paper bag. Thanks to the viewer who sent me this lovely piece of wood,

Koa is my favorite wood. I was lucky enough to bring home a few pieces on my last trip to Hawaii before it was places on the CITES list. Now, it's damn near impossible.

Great process for turning a green work piece. Well described. Those pieces should be beautiful when finish turned. Will be looking forward to seeing them in a future session.

Looking forward to see what these blanks become. Koa is a very pretty wood. A question: Would the McNaughton (or any other) coring system be capable of coring a dry maple burl? I've seen burl turning blanks for sale, but at a very high price; it would be a shame to turn away most of such a blank if it could be cored into one or more additional blanks. However, not sure if the hardness of the dry burl would lend itself to coring.

Coring really dry wood is dusty and not much fun. But it can be done. I spray water into the curf continually to keep it wet. But most really dry wood has also started to split and crack etc But burls can dry more successfully because of the crazy grain structure. Sam

Thanks for showing the process. I've been thinking about making a kiln. Which way do you think is better drying a bowl the way you do or a kiln? Take care and GOD BLESS 🙏!

I do have a small light bulb kiln for small stuff. It is a very gentle way of drying rough-turned pieces. I think a kiln is worth it for turning lots of bowls quickly. If you are more of a production turner that is. But that is a big undertaking. You would need a heat source, a way to remove water and control the humidity etc. But a kiln can also ruin lots of bowls if they are dried too fast. I am no expert on kilns. You need to investigate real kiln makers. Sam

Tom Lewis Thank you for this video. It explained some things that I didn't know that I didn't know. I hope that made sense. As a very inexperienced turner, I have a question. How do you halve the log after you separate it from the larger piece? Do you use your chainsaw, bandsaw, or maybe a froe to split it? I have done some turning using blanks, either purchased or from glued up boards in my shop, but I haven't done any green turning, and I would like to learn that aspect. Thanks.

Good question, I do have a chainsaw which I use for larger pieces. I can also use my bandsaw and I even have a fro. All good ways to cut down a log in one way or another. I have lots of videos on milling logs into a bowl blank and just making bowls in general thanks Sam.

Thank you Sam. Q: when getting uniform wall thickness for twice turned bowls, do you factor in the tenon thickness as part of the uniform wall thickness or do you allow the bottom to be thicker than the wall thickness?
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER Жыл бұрын
This is a really important question. I think I will deal with this in my next notes from the Turning Shop video which is going to be out December 16. Yes, if you leave the area at the bottom of the bowl too thick, he will have drawing issues. The tenant can add, more thickness to the bottom and cause problems later on I sometimes just make the bottom of the bowl a little thinner on the inside to compensate. Thanks, Sam.
