Video of a John Deere 7810 Tractor pulling a New Holland BR780 round baler baling wheat straw near Greenville Ohio. I realized after posting the video I said New Holland BR78 when the baler is actually a BR780.

We love our MF/Hesston 2946A Round Baler in combo with our MF 6716S tractor. The hydraulics are self-contained. We just have to hook up our hitch & PTO. When the bale is fullsize, it beeps, we stop via our brake pedal (love that IVT), the baler declutches / wraps / ejects / holds off the bale / closes / restarts / beeps. We simply then just take our foot of the brake and away we go with the next one. Not shifting, clutching, flipping switches or moving SCV levers.

Mike, what company first came out with the big round baler? Was it Vermeer of Pella, Iowa? I want to say it was, because I remember in about 1973 when we first started seeing Vermeer big round balers in my part of Iowa. Also, I watched a video of a JD cotton picker this morning and it holds the bale at the tail of the picker until it gets to the end row and then it drops it. Maybe that is an idea for big round balers, so that the pick up of them is easier. Another idea I have is to pull a trailer behind the big round baler and the bale just rolls onto and to the back of the trailer. Also, they should have some type of distributor mechanism inside the baler ahead of the roller that evenly distributes the hay so that the bales are uniformly rolled. Just some thoughts is all.

Looks like they need a belting flap on the bottom of the drawbar. The Rest of the Story has that on all their tractors.

Mike, when do you think farmers will start towing a baler behind the combine? That would eliminate one tractor from the field, saving money.

In some places they have especially where they are having problems with resistant weeds the problems come by doing that though is due to needing with a round baler needing to stop it would not only hold up the combine but you'd have problems unless you stopped prior to the bale being ready you would have the straw still flowing through the combine that it has cut. With the weather as unpredictable as it is you want to be able to go and keep going having a baler attached is another thing that can go wrong and leave the combine at a stand still which is the last thing you want. You also have the issue unless you are in a part of the world where you are blessed with sun and lots of it where for example the wheat might be ready to cut but the straw might not be fit (dry enough) and still be a bit green which can cause fires in self combusting bales if it is too unfit where then you can risk the wheat missing what figures your mill or buyer likes. It is ultimately much simpler and easier to just use a tractor, a baler and another driver or in the case of our neighbours a contractor to bale it for you especially as you are likely to make more off the grain than you will the straw some times it can be the other way but generally the grain is your primary crop and the rest either a supplement or bonus or in the case of linseed a pain in the ass.
