Why are radial engines so loved by pilots, aircraft owners, and enthusiasts of the vintage aviation community? Hear from a few folks with intimate knowledge of the radial engine about what it is that makes this round motor special.

Great video. The sound of a radial is the best sound in aviation, especially when you have 4 of them singing in unison on a B-17, B-24, or B-29.

Then envision a flight of B36’s on a practice run flying overhead. Loud, obnoxious and undeniably Radial! I lived halfway between Columbus and Cleveland, and a squadron of bombers were based out of Wright Patterson out of Dayton. They would fly out over Lake Erie when I was a kid. Awesome!

Growing up around airports and radial engined antique airplanes, can't help but get a little teary eyed. So many of "The Caretakers" of these glorious aircraft are no longer with us, like my father who has gone west. Thank you dad for my gift of wings. I will forever be greatful. You taught me it's not all about the airplanes; It's the people who fly them that make them special. To those that care for The Spartans, Staggerwings, Wacos, Travel Airs and all the others....... Do your best to pass them on to future generations. Thank you!

What an inspiring captivating video! Thank you for posting this. I'm a couple days post back surgery. Grounded for a few weeks and in some pain. Grumpy. But this made my day. I'm so lucky to know what I love and live in a day where I can go fly. Out of the history of mankind only a few humans get to defy gravity. Thank you for reminding me of how lucky I am.

The sound of a Beaver on floats at full throttle echoing off the sides of the bay simply can't be beat, except perhaps by that same plane starting and idling. :) I've had the pleasure of flights in Beavers and a Stearman. Such amazing planes with such cool engines.

Thank God that the dirty board members that were there in the early 2000's are gone, since they stole and sold off LOTS of radial engines. They offered our collection a ton of parts, but I declined, and went on the warpath against them. They are proper now, and a real show- Just as Cole would have wished.

Yes! nothing like the sound of a radial engine; I know in the early 70's our local airport had a air tanker group ran the b-26's converted over to drop fire retardant and later moved over to newer radial aircraft which finally got replaced by bigger faster jet aircrafts; I used to sit at the old house back then an watch all the old aircraft take off EVEN the Mustang's take off and do VERY HIGH POWER runs over the house it was FUN

I was taught, properly mind you, that Motors are electric, and engines are fuel combustion powered. Being as that I own a Radial Powered WWI aircraft, these inaccuracies are frustrating, since they MISLEAD the youth that will grow up with these things being repeated by folks that should be smarter, but seems a lot to ask for these days. All types of the motors we have developed have a wonderful song to sing such as the radial. I remember an arial applicator back home that had a biplane powered with a radial, and loved hearing it as it went through it's paces. My Father's model "A" John Deere plowing up old black gumbo soil was another wonderful sound. The old "71" series Detroits, good listening. I have been a motorhead all my life enjoying the sounds and abilities of all kinds of motors. The Harley sound is just one of those very recognizable sounds out there that is so distinctly one of it's own. Just like the radial. They both share a power pulse and that certain rhythm that sets them aside. There is a symmetry there reguardless of your hate for Harley.
