In the beginning he looses because he has 2 aces and 3 9's and teddy has 3 aces and 2 9's.. since teddy has more of the higher card he wins it all
@promiscuous6756 ай бұрын
Absolutely, Mr. Malkovich's "Teddy" had 2 aces in his hand, while Mr. Damon's "Mike" had an ace and a nine in his hand, there was one ace, two nines, and two other cards on the table.

I love all the oddball references in this movie: Clyde Frazier & Pearl Monroe (basketball), Papa Wallenda (trapeze), 1L (law school), Buckner at Shea (1986 World Series) etc. It really adds to the insider feel: this hidden world that people don't know exists.

Trust me. Malkovich's accent is spot on.

Rake is slang for take-out percentage (aka, the take) of the prize money the house sets aside for itself as a fee for hosting the game.

He wasn't being a bum, the entire point of how he told her that he felt truly alive for the first time in months at the card table and the Professor seeing his skills and telling him that story of destiny was that his true purpose in life was to be a card player and his girl didn't see that so she was not meant for him. A man going after his purpose would want his woman to support him not try to control him and stop him. It ended up good because they were not meant for each other. He should have been honest with her, but in a way he was from a standpoint of when she asked if he was at a card game he said no, but he meant there is no way he could have lost playing against those players. The only way he could lose is playing against Teddy KGB or a real card player. This is definitely one of my favorite movies. One of the un-noticed heroes of the movie is Joey Knish because he only plays the suckers and doesn't try to go against other real players and therefore he always has a steady income or "grinding a living" he never has a huge amount of money but has the guts to never risk it all so he always has money so he has a lot of self control.
@jesses5463Ай бұрын
It should be noted that Mike also never had a huge amount of money despite playing in such a way that he was doomed to go broke. Mike was a bum, and this movie inspired a generation of bums who chased poker glory.

This movie is amazing and sits just outside my top 10 of all time. That is saying something considering i own over 2000 movies. Obviously seen alot more than that number.

First hand he lost he had AA999. Malkovich had AAA99 Three aces trumps two aces. Even though both hands were full houses. Damon thought he was gonna end up with 5 cards all the same symbols. A flush hand. See in texas holdem both players get two cards. Then in the center of table 3 cards are shown. Both players use their 2 cards plus the 3 center cards to decipher what best 5 hand a player has. Bets are made. Then a 4th center card is drawn. Both players can keep seeing who has best 5 card hand using their 2 cards plus any 3 of the 4 cards in center. Bets are made. Then a 5th center final card is added. Same process. Players 2 cards plus any 3 of the 5 center cards are used to decipher peoples hands. So Damon started with an A9 and Malkovich started with an AA. Both players used the remining 5 center cards and both ended up with full houses but Malkovich was AA-999. And Damon was A9-A99. Make sense?

This movie was released WAY before the whole online Poker and airing of the World Poker Tour and stuff hit the airwaves... for many people, it was their first introduction to Texas Hold 'Em ... and it gave people the dream of hitting it big on this game. Prior to this, most people typically played straight up "draw poker" or 5-/7-card stud The number of Poker variants available nowadays at the casinos - either as a player-versus-player game or a house-versus-player game are incredible (exactly how the cards are dealt, when you can bet, what you're betting on, etc) .. but the specific hands are pretty standardized High Card being the lowest hand (just the highest value card in your hand, Ace is the highest single card and 2's are the lowest card) followed by One Pair, Two Pair, Three of a Kind, a Straight (consecutive numerical values (example: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 - the particular suit of each card doesnt matter), a Flush (all the same suit (example, all hearts or all spades - the numerical value on the card doesnt matter), a Full House (3 of a Kind + supporting Pair... i.e., 3 Aces and a Pair of 2's beats 3 Kings and a Pair of Queens - because the Aces out rank the Kings), Four of a Kind, and a Straight Flush (consecutive numerical value all of the same suit - 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 of clubs)... with a Royal Flush simply being a straight flush of the highest values in that particular suit (Ace, King, Queen, Jack, and Ten) I personally like this game a LOT more than Blackjack or some of the other casino games - despite the odds being a bit tougher in getting strong hands Online poker - especially when people aren't playing for any REAL MONEY gets a bit crazy because there just seem to be a LOT of players who just bet EVERYTHING on every hand - hoping to "get lucky" and get dealt a better hand that the other players. Since it's not "real money" - there's nothing gained or lost in risking it all

Thank you for all of that! I knew just some of the hierarchy and hands. I wonder why 10 is considered a royal flush? I definitely now see the strategy and risk of the game. I could really get into it!

The term is actually "card SHARP"
@WheresWaldo052 ай бұрын
Nope. Both sharp and shark are both used identically/interchangeably. Do some research please.
@jesses5463Ай бұрын
To my knowledge the term sharp is primarily used in sports betting to describe a winning player. Card shark is more commonly used in poker, but it wouldn't surprise me if way back in the day the term sharp was used more often.
