I was lucky enough to be born into a house with music. My dad loves to play piano, and he wasn’t the most talkative person, but when he started to play piano, you could feel him speaking to you. When I was 2 years old, he would sit me on his lap and play this song. When I was 14 years old, he was diagnosed with cancer, and they told him he wouldn’t live to the end of the year (it was August) He lived for two more years, defying everything the doctors had told him. He died surrounded by his family, and his last words to me were, “never stop playing, can you please, play for me? And not forget me? Can you do that for me?” At his funeral, I was asked if I would play a song, and I chose to play this song, the song he played while I would sit on his lap. The song that could bring back a thousand memories. And now, 8 years later, I sat down at the piano with my beautiful 2 year old girl, who we decided to name Claire, and played this song for her.

I have played piano for 18 years. My Dad loved this song. I played this for him frequently. He said if I memorized this piece he would give me $100. I had a concert and featured this piece and after the concert my dad gave me the $100. A few years ago he passed away and I played Clair de Lune at his funeral. I know he heard me when I played this at his funeral. He can hear me playing the piano still. RIP Dad.

My grandma's friend, Liz, asked her to play this at Liz's funeral before she passed, and we were with my grandma while she was practicing beforehand. This was the first time I had heard Clair de lune, and I was in awe. My grandma played with such elegance and smoothness, but she was very humble about it. She has pretty severe arthritis so it's difficult to play, but it still sounds amazing. I loved secretly listening to her play from downstairs, and I still ask my grandma to play it just because it's so beautiful.

Except Beethoven never actually called it Moonlight Sonata himself. Sonata quasi una Fantasia was the official title and it was Ludwig Rellstab, a german journalist and music critic who coined that title. A popular (yet unconfirmed) theory is that Beethoven himself was probably rather thinking about going through varies stages of grief when writing that as it was in a way, a love letter to a woman that spurned him. As such you have to see the three movements differently. Depression, Denial, Anger... That's how I would see the three movements of the sonata personally but as always, it's a matter of interpretation. But it's safe to say that Beethoven most likely did not think of the moon when writing his piece.

This clair de lune which is an utter master piece and Satie - Gymnpedie no 1, are such excellent pieces my favorites when it comes to piano. The Gymnopedie because it's so simple, but evokes so much emotion. Clair De Lune because it's mesmerizing how the notes and sounds comes together so beautifully. The genius of composing such a melody.

I too had made a promise .When I was little my aunt always told me to play the piano for her but I was very shy so I went and hid.. Now I regret not having played piano for her. every time she asked me. It's been several months since she left this world and I only remember the promise she made me promise. She asked me to play "Claire de Lune" for her when I was more experienced and now I just listen to this piece and cry in front of this sweet melody. Even watching Your Lie in April I remember my aunt. My aunt is my reason for playing the piano and I gave my all for her. Thank you Debussy.

In 2020 my grandmother passed. She was a piano teacher at home for many years and the organ player at her church, and she got the misfortune of having to raise me 😂 chirstmas was always difficult for me, but the Christmas before she passed was particularly memorable. After the rest of the family left, I'd come to visit, just me and my grandparents. When I showed up she was having her nightly mix drink and playing songs on the piano, one of them being this song. It made me tear up having never heard it before. Alot of the music she would play for us would be pieces we liked and she was partially unfamiliar with, often times choppy, knocking the dust off to play. This one tho I could tell she loved. She played it seemingly from her heart. I will never forget that moment. Flash forward a year after she passed I had found you, rousseaus, and your other videos and fallen back in love with classical music. When I came across this song by chance something in me broke and I cried for an hour. This was the song she played that night and when I closed my eyes and listened I could feel my grandmother next to me. It's difficult for me to listen to even going on 4 years later and hearing it now dozens of times, but every time I hear it I feel my grandmothers kind soul and soft heart. Thank you.

my mother just passed a few days ago. She was a classical pianist. As she aged, she wasn't able to play complex songs. I remember as a child laying on the floor for HOURS, listening to her play Debussy, Lizst, Beethoven, and more. I'll never understand how people can play piano. It just amazes me. Having to use all your fingers playing different notes and then your feet as well seems much more than my brain could handle. I played french horn in high school and 3 fingers and mouth to make one note at a time was all I could handle. Clair de Lune feels almost like a bittersweet goodbye to me. The beginning is very smooth and slow, but progressing through it seems like the music is getting more aggressive and fighting itself almost and then the chords seem to become more sad than an angry major type of thing if that makes sense, and then it slows down towards the end and almost resolves itself. It is truly beautiful
