Great show - better than many shows we can see on TV today!

George Maharis missed the last 4 episodes of season 2 due to contracting hepatitis during an earlier episode filmed in Texas. Herbert Leonard pressured a still recovering Maharis to rejoin the show for the season 3 opener, promising a lighter work schedule, which never happened. He was soon working increasing hours that eventually led to a relapse of his hepatitis while on location in St Louis. Leonard knew the popular Maharis was now driving the show and that greed cost Maharis his health and forced a second departure from the series. When Leonard once again tried to force Maharis back in front of the cameras, Maharis defended his decision due to his ailing condition, stayed back in New York and missed 5 more episodes.Leonard refused to pay Maharis for missed shows and when Maharis threatened to sue, Leonard said he'd fire him, leading Maharis no out, but to quit. Maharis could have come back to the series but for the callousness of Herbert Leonard. Without Maharis Route 66 was done. Replacement Glen Corbet never had the chemistry with series co-star Martin Milner. They were too much alike. Unessarily sad ending to a brilliant television series.

If you study all the episodes, this has had to be one of the most brutal film-TV production schedule 'till that time.... And since then.

@@jamescalifornia2964 Even at age 94, it was still somewhat sad to here of the passing of George Maharis. Now that all three of the stars that appeared on different seasons of Route 66 , are no longer with us, a door to a highly nostalgic piece of my early television memories has closed. Thank you though to those responsible for the Shout Factory.

As this was a show that I personally enjoyed watching as a kid born in the mid fifties and growing up in the sixties, I always wondered why the change. And yes I could never enjoy the show anymore although I seriously wanted to.

This episode is a real time capsule of Page AZ and Glen Canyon dam being constructed in its early stages. The diversion tunnels, the bridge. The dam would create Lake Powell. Page looked like about 5 buildings and lots of trailers in 1960.

I read somewhere that the production crew of this show would just sort of meander around the countries looking for good shooting locations. Once they found the place, like here with the dam works, they wrote a story around it. Quite amazing if you think about it. On the spot write a script that fit the area and took in local characters.

That method is exactly why the show got cancelled. It’s a very, very expensive way to go about things, especially for TV. You’d never see tv shows doing something like that ever again.
@frankfarago28253 жыл бұрын
That is how it's done in seat-of-the-pants low & no budget productions and indie films and limi ted series to this day. First you find the location(s), then "get inspired" by such location(s) and write a story around it in a day or two, or come back to it when you're ready. Hire as many local talent as you can. Easy as one-two-three. Messrs. Silliphant and Leonard were past masters of it.

That’s why Maharis left unfortunately. I agree that it’s fantastic.
@mickey18492 жыл бұрын
It's certainly one of the most iconic shows of the 1960s. They were barely staying two months ahead of the shoot while scouting new locations to shoot. Sterling Silliphant was rolling out new scripts faster than Hershey can roll out chocolate bars. They were riding a wave with a hit show.

The actress who plays Jo, Bethel Leslie, looks SO much like Lee Remick. I did a Google image search for both, and in some shots they look distinctly different; but in others they are dead ringers! To a lesser extent, the actress with the role of Sue, Zohra Lampert, reminds me of Tyne Daly. And of course, Donna Douglas, who played Dana, reminds me of Ellie May Clampett because ...

Ending credits show Screen Gems and Columbia Pictures because they were partners. When artists made records or when soundtracks from movies were put on record (Example: Monkees), the original label was Colgems (Columbia & Screen Gems).
@paulwilliams4194 жыл бұрын
Yes. I remember all that, and both Columbia Pictures & Screen Gems are, as you know, both owned by Sony.
@scvandy31294 жыл бұрын
@@paulwilliams419 Right. However, when "Route 66" was in production more than half a century ago Columbia Pictures was its own, wholly-owned corporation. With the advent of television Columbia established Screen Gems as a subsidiary devoted to the small screen, to produce and distribute half-hour and hour scripted programs. Early Screen Gems successes include situation comedies "Father Knows Best," "Dennis the Menace," "The Donna Reed Show" and in the drama mold, the hour-long "Route 66". Today the mighty SONY Corporation owns Columbia Pictures, both its film and television departments, the latter no longer called Screen Gems, but rather SONY TV. So, to correct Terry Sanders, the two weren't partners but separate entities of the corporation, Columbia Pictures.

They should've done that same thing with the phony, poorly cast remake in the early '90s. The brand new 1993-1994 corvette would have provided the viewers a much needed distraction from the shabby acting.

Finally finished watching this total farrago. What a sordid mess! Amazing that ANYONE had put a dollar down to make this episode from the utterly garbage script. Yeah, and the two-bit drunkard "lady" in the trailer making a move on Maharis -- and she is wondering why her hubby cheats on her? Lots of lowlives in this one. And the ending --with everyone smack in the middle of the blast zone, phew..... Again, whomever wrote this krap?
