Nice one man. If you're able to come up with enough info about it, can you do one on the Pan-American Highway as well? It runs from either Alaska or Northern Canada, all the way down to Argentina. That's one I've always dreamed of driving. Might have to travel well armed (as long as you can also hide them well to get across border checkpoints ;-) ) to get through some of those areas, but I think it would be worth it. And I don't mean needing to be armed now b/c of the current situation - the road used to go through active conflict areas. Again though, I think it would be an amazing trip (long, yes - but still) to see the variety of scenery from Alaska all the way down through the jungles of central American, to the farm lands and then mountains of south America and all the way down to the ocean I believe in Argentina. So, if you can do a show on that one, I think it could be really fascinating. Another cool road-focused one could be a show on the Bolivian Death Road. With a name like (and that's seriously what it was and maybe still is called) that its begging for an episode. Look it up on Y T and you'll see some stuff on it, but I think you could add something to what's around.

@@MelindaColden I think a lot of the "no culture" opinion comes from most Americans never traveling abroad. Many foreigners don't grasp how huge this place is, and we have regions with their own history/culture to see without leaving the US. This video actually made me YEARN to drive Route 66, just to see all the sights, and visit a gigantic slice of American history! While most of the road is historically preserved (thank goodness), it's not the vast stretch of highway that it used to be. Which is sad, in a way. Still, I'm going to drive this slice of Americana one day, just to tell people that I did it. It feels like, on the whole, it's quite a scenic route to travel, especially as you get west of Texas. That's why I'm going to start in Chicago, and slowly build up to finishing on the Pacific Beaches of California. It feels like the trip gets more and more spectacular as it travels east to west, and I want to replicate that. My grandfather was my age (late 30's) the last time he traveled Route 66. I'd like to think that, as I travel this historic road, he's watching me from his place in the afterlife... and nodding with a smile. God in heaven! Now I'm crying!! I can't believe the effect a road that I've never traveled is having on me right now!

I've never been on the northern section of Rt 66, but I have driven from St. Louis to LA. There are times when it looks like just a barren stretch of road where the thought of running out of gas becoming an actual concern. While other stretches go through beautiful landscapes where your only concern is staying on the road as you marvel at the creation stretched before you. And then there's the towns. While the big cities are where you're going, the small towns are how you got there. And those small towns have two sides. Some are like a world in a bottle. You drive through cracked streets to see old diners and movie theaters unchanged and just as busy as they were in the 50s. And then you come to the ghost towns, towns that can be as small as a couple homes and a city hall while some span vast distances, and every bit of it barren. Businesses, homes, police stations, drive in theaters and music halls. A town that if you stop and wonder, you can almost hear the chatter of a bustling town, only for it to be wisped away by the howl of the wind and crunch of a rolling tumbleweed. You climb back in your car and drive away with nothing more than vanishing thought of lost hope and what could have been. Stay on the highway long enough and you will pass through almost every type of terrain and you will experience every range of emotions you can think of.

It's really something every westerner should see in their lifetime. Having followed much of Route 66 in a big truck as well as the interstates that replaced it...it's well worth the detour and some extra time to travel down 66. Even if you do happen to be driving a moving truck. It's amazing how each state is different and you can roughly tell where you are without signs. It's also amazing how incredibly vast and empty the interior of the US is.

When traveling through New Mexico, the narrator mentions Santa Domingo. This location certainly worth seeing would have on the earlier first alignment of Route 66(prior to 1937). This took you from Clines Corners northward through Santa Fe (New Mexico' State Capital) turning south through Albuquerque down what is 4th Street. It continues South to Los Lunas then westward where it would "reconnect" with the post 1937 alignment between Albuquerque and Cubero. I grew up in Albuquerque, not far from Central Ave.(Route 66) It will forever be in my heart and soul. I remember traveling it with my father on weekly trips to the "Old West Mesa Airport" (Now sadly just ruins, near Central & Coors Blvd.)or traveling to California on summer vacations. For me it wasn't the introduction of the interstate system that ended our Route 66 experience, It was the joys of aviation with the purchase of an airplane my father purchased. Making traveling much faster. Seeing Route 66 from a different aspect is something I would certainly recommend. Still travel it when I can. The "Old Road" is dear to America, stopping at that gas station, diner or catching some "Z's" at a motel along the way. Visit America!! No better way to see it today than Route 66! So much to see. Come get your kicks!

Loved the TV Show as a kid in Scotland in the 1950s, later, 1990s, I lived on US66 in Flagstaff Arizona, learned to drive Big Rigs on US66 in Victorville California, lived on US66 in Joplin Missouri, and drove on it many times from Chicago to LA, in a Big Rig, though most of it today is incorporated into the Interstate System but often you can see old US66 running alongside and the surface is more reddish than black and the photo used here of a black top road with the US66 Logo painted on it is rather new as the various States got tired of people stealing the original old signs and so decided on painting the logo directly on the Highway hoping that nobody will dig it up, I guess, however you can sit beside it and somebody can take your photo as long as there aint any traffic. The most original part of old US66 is out of Kingman Arizona as it leaves I-40.... Its more than a Road, its a state of mind.

Travelled this highway as a kid when my family would go visit grandparents in Lodi from our home in Arkansas in the 60's. Parts were still 2-lane 66 and ran through the middle of towns like Winslow and Tucumcary(sp?) while others were 4-lane interstate 40. Cars didn't have air-conditioning and the drive through the desert in summer required that you hang a bag of water wrapped in burlap on the front of your radiator to help keep your engine from overheating. Drove through the lava beds in California and the Painted Desert. Mom got to play on slot machines in Arizona. Worried about running out of gas before the next gas station. Miles and miles of harsh, rugged, beautiful landscape. Jackalope signs (look it up). Tourist traps and tourqouis(sp?) jewelry everywhere. I told my wife I want to take a trip down old 66 when we retire to see my old home in California (I was born in Lodi). I'll probably be disappointed by the delapidation and wear and tear of time, but I think it will be worth it.

You'll see great cities, small towns, ghost towns, cross mighty rivers, forests, farmland, rangeland and deserts. It's just and amazing trip.

How did you over look Winslow AZ?? The Eagles mentioned it in their song Take It Easy. "Standing a corner in Winslow Arizona, such a fine sight to see, it's a girl my lord in a flatbed Ford, slowing down to take a look at me" They even have a statue of a guy playing guitar with a mural next to it of a girl in a flatbed Ford!

I am planning a trip on Route 66 either this year or next. I found on Amazon a complete set of maps from Ghost Town Press, one for each state the Mother Road goes through. The maps show the currently driveable parts of the Road and how to drive between them to get to the next part. Been on my bucket list for quite a few years. It's going to be a blast. I'm going to give myself about 5 weeks to do the trip as I'd like to visit as many of the roadside attractions, that are still left, as possible, taking pictures all the way of course.

You should check out the spur from Gallup, NM northwards towards CO, and UT. It is now know as U.S. Route 491, but it was once known as Route 666 "The Devil's Highway". :-)

I grew up on 66 in Oklahoma, lots of neat things along the way between Tulsa and OKC. Arcadia's Round Barn and Pop's (bacon soda!), Stroud's Rock Cafe (featured in Disney's Cars), and my hometown, Chandler, the home of the Route 66 Interpretive Center and one of the last remaining billboards on the roof of a barn, advertising Maramec Caverns in Missouri. Great video with great stops along the way.

In 1952 as a seven-year-old I traveled Route 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica in a 1951 Blue Henry J with my folks as dad had to report to Travis AFB on his way to Korea. Funny as life completes its circle as 52 years later I moved to the middle of the longest continuous stretch of Route 66....... Kingman, Arizona.

I've been down it several times, it's cool how the wigwam motel (the teepee car drive-in hotel) is still there and diners/drive-ins all rotting away in their original 50's space age style. I go every few years since I live not too far from it, reminds me of the movie Cars haha

I'd love to see a dedicated video to the Route 66 State Park in Missouri - formerly known as Times Beach, a site of huge criminal negligence and staggering dioxin poisoning. Could be a Biographics on Russell Bliss, the man who accidentally doomed an entire town, or a Business Blaze, a fail of epic proportions by Hoffman-Taff and improper toxic-waste disposal

As a young child, we used to watch a tv show called Route 66 ("get your kicks, on route 66") and a bunch of summers late, dad drove us on route 66 for only a short distance since it had been closed for long enough that the pavement wasn't in good condition and there wasn't much left there except empty shops and space. The thing about the tv show was that two unmarried white guys who had the freedom to just take off and drive 3/4 of the way across the USA have adventures and a good time.
