My Dad used to say that during those years: "We don't know how good we have it." Once again, I wish he were still with us so I could tell him how right he was.

At 92 my dad is still around, he said the exact same thing then and he was right -- especially in our case. He'd already been the mayor of Buena Park and the youngest mayor in California history at the time; and when _Route 66_ hit the tube he was a developer well on his way to becoming a millionaire at age 33. I was 5 y/o, so yeah, I had no friggin' idea how good we had it. After 65 years living in the U.S. I certainly know now, and wish I could go back to those heady days in the early 60s with the knowledge and appreciation I have now for what we had and the American vibe back then.

Just drove along road trip to Tulsa oklahoma and back through on I-40 running parallel to Route 66. Scenic and thoughts about the old okies traveling down in their best up Model A and Model Ts carrying all they could carry to California to escape the dust bowl and depression. They were poor and most couldn't afford a motel so they pitched a tent by the roadisde and heated up a can of beans to split 3 ways. They didn't know where they would end up or if it could be better or worse than the dust bowl. They were one tough people. They had such grit and determination. Now we drive down at 80 mph in six conditioned comfort, not even thinking about the miserable heat or freezing cold and hunger those people endured such respect for those who came before.

@@edvvard1 _"Thanks fuckin boomers for your typical carefree world view and actions that you left others to clean up after you."_ What a ridiculous comment. Those "carefree" days, I presume, allude to hippies and the "Me" generation of the 1970s. What did this short-lived era have to do with the evolution of U.S. society? The corporate world was king (as usual), the government was headed by men having nothing to do with the specified attitude (JFK, LBJ, Nixon, Ford, Carter), and then the world really took a turn for the worse with the advent of Ronald Reagan, evolving into the age of characteristic irresponsibility emerging years later, with wasteful wars and an immoral "take no prisoners" attitude, particularly on the part of the mutating Republican Party. Thank goodness there are millennials and successive generations whom we may count on to set the world on a more correct path.

I lived in Doolittle,Missouri until 1972. We had 12.5 acres the next little farm south of Route 66 on Highway T. My now late dad Jake Corder Fire Chief of Fort Leonard Wood Missouri Fire Department, started the Doolittle Volunteer Fire Department in 1951/52. Today Doolittle's Fire Department sits on what was the back 6 acres of my old homeplace. My story is found in The Mother Road by Micahel Wallis 1990 pages 67-69. Mom now nearly 93 years old, enjoyed watching the televison show on CBS on KRCG TV Channel 13 from our aerial antenna on top of the house. 1961; 9 years old. Route 66 preceded a very spooky show called Way Out (Roald Dahl). This theme song gives me the same chill I got as Route 66 ended anticipating being scared out of my wits! Anyone remember that show?. The Friday night lineup was Route 66; Way Out; The Twilight Zone.

In 1960, when I was 6, they filmed two season 1 episodes in the small northern Arizona town we lived at. I remember watching some of the filming. When the series collection came out on DVD i picked it up and occasionally watch "Layout at Glen Canyon" and "The Beryllium Eater" to see what the area looked like back then.

This music took its cues from what was left of the Beat Generation of Kerouac's novel, "On the Road." Vietnam was a half-decade and a national nightmare away. IKE was still President, B/W TV was still mainstream technology, cars resembled jets or rockets with their iconic fins and bullet taillights, and Madison Avenue came at us in colors like avocado, Aztek gold and aquamarine. I dedicate this amazing music in memory of my uncle who drove a '58 Vette cross-country from Ohio to Santa Monica, CA, and to a guy who lived down the block from me, who rode his chopped 1950 Harley Panhead from Cleveland, OH, to Northern California where he lived out the rest of his life with his wife of fifty years. I also want to dedicate this tune to my folks. They were truly great amongst "The Greatest Generation." Thanks to maestro Nelson Riddle and orchestra.

Great show, never missed an episode when I was a kid. But looking at it now realise it was pure fantasy. 2 young guys driving along Route 66, did not work or have any commitments running into one adventure after another, when for us average guys, we were tied down in mundane jobs, didn`t have much money and would not had been possible to live that sort of lifestyle. This is why this TV series was very popular, because back then most of us guys wanted to be either one of those two characters in the show.

Turning 60 this Year, & Went on Location around the Country, Loved the Brawls that Martin Miller, George Maharis & Glen Corbett, who Replaced George, that they got into with Other Guest on the Show & with Each Other. My Favorite was the 1963 Episode, "50 Miles from Home" with Glen Corbett's Debut on the Show as Lincoln Case a Army Vet on Leave from the Early Days of Vietnam in Texas in Houston, some Thugs Messed with him at a Restaurant, Mopped the Floor with Him, Even Martin Milner's Character caught up with him Took him to the Hospital where the Thug was at, & Corbett's Character had a Stern Talk with him about his Actions & Left Hitchhiked a Ride 50 Miles Away to where he was From, Woke his Mother Up they Talked, the Town wanted to Honor him in a Parade & Ceremony & in the Auditorium Martin Milner's Character Caught him with Him & All Hell Broke Loose! They Slugged it Out in the Auditorium Late at Night, Patched it Up & Moved On! End of Story!

Opening scene is old Route US 40 coming down east side of Donner Pass and pans to Rainbow Bridge looking east with Donner Lake in the background. The main Donner Party camp spot is just past the far end of the lake. Squaw Valley Ski Resort is about a 30 minute drive from the bridge and Lake Tahoe another 10 minutes or so.
