Routing your Superior Drummer 3 Drums in Logic Pro X. Learn to route your drum tracks to mono so they are ready for mixing. Make sure to keep your overheads and main room mic stereo. If you have a mono room mic, keep it mono.

Great video . One thing . The buses are not required :) just create the same audio tracks record enabled and route the SD output buses to each corresponding channel . Bonus tip : any type of analog summing or compression etc you wanna do and get it printed, you do it in the SD3 multitrack busses in Logic Pro x so they are printed to the tracks you’re recording at ! Happy mixing !

@@willytonezone Also if you want to print mono tracks like for example kick, sd, toms seperately etc, pan them to the left on the SD Plugin. Then, on the triggered audio channels make them mono to the ones you want and voila ! Make sure you adjust the printing volume from the SD faders IN your daw. So , gain stage in 2 stages, One is on the SD busses hitting -18dbfs (if using analog emulations especially), in order to get that tone , and then add a level meter on each of the recording enabled audio tracks and compensate from the SD Busses faders on your daw! Aiming normally at around -12dp peak. Happy mixing bro!

One more thing you can do , is send from the superior drummer multi , independent pans for the overheads for example , to make it more realistic and have two faders because you might wanna mix for example a more “snare weight channel” in a different way , or even just lower it . Another way to do this is the plugin ISOL8 , it’s free , but that’s putting another plugin to your chain and you need also to duplicate the channel (one instance of the plugin in each stereo track, choose left in one track on ISOL8 choose right on the other one ). It’s so easier to send independent pans though for the OH or anything :)

I’ll check out that ISOL8. Thanks for the extra tip that’s very helpful! Another way of production.

I am very new to SD3, just got it a few days ago and want to learn the CORE rather than spend $100s of $100s on all the EPX, The mixer in SD3 seems to be pretty cool by itself but I can see bringing it into Logic as a benefit- I look forward to future videos Thanks again - I subscribed @@willytonezone

I don't think it's necessary to first route all the SD3 multi-channel inputs to busses before sending those to audio tracks. You can simply set the audio track inputs to the multichannel inputs directly, no? I have my setup the same as you do here now, but I'm thinking of stripping out the bus layer. Thoughts?
@willytonezone
@willytonezone 2 ай бұрын
If you figure out that way I would love to know but unfortunately to get it printed to audio, this is the only way I know.

@willytonezone OK, I could have swore I saw an option to directly connect the SD3 inputs to audio tracks the other day, but I'm not seeing them now. You're right. You need the bus layer. Just doesn't make sense. If I can route a physical input from my Scarlett directly to an audio track, why not a virtual SD3 one?

Thank you Willy, this was very well done! When it comes to Logic Pro X track organization, what type of track stack do you recommend for the AUX and Drum AUDIO channels - Folder Stacks or Summing Stacks?
@willytonezone
@willytonezone 9 ай бұрын
I would definitely use summing stacks! The folder stacks I believe are just for grouping but the summing stacks can group and you can treat it as a bus and put plug ins on it. Thank you for the kind words.

Great video, thanks it was very helpful; separate question: do you also encounter that the shortcuts of SD3 (like backspace to delete a note, cmd-z to undo etc) don't work when using SD3 inside logic pro x?
@willytonezone
@willytonezone Жыл бұрын
@tendingtropic7778 I certainly do experience the same thing. I find myself just selecting undo inside of SD3 because if I undo with the keyboard command then ill just undo something within my session. (deleted a track or undid a move in a plug in) I'm sure they can fix that but not the biggest deal if you know you can just use the undo in the edit menu of SD3.

what would be the downside to routing them all to one buss at the end and inserting your effects on the SD3 tracks themselves? ie run your mixing process before you print them. this is cool but a lot more tracks than i have to deal with in other daws.
@willytonezone
@willytonezone 5 ай бұрын
You’re right. That is an another way of doing it and more efficient technically. But I would say if you’re committing to your sounds then you should print to audio first then mix it. Otherwise if you want to have the option to mix and tweak your sounds you could do it the way you’re suggesting and then just print it after separately or to a sum.

Don’t understand why in both EZD & SD v3 they destroyed the routing outputs. Use to be able to separate all output channels. Wanna create separate aux, each routed to matching audio tracks so I can print, however having only 16 total outputs it leaves 5+ channels you can’t route septette. You gotta print, then go back and adjust your inputs just so you can print the left over channels.
@willytonezone
@willytonezone Жыл бұрын
I agree it is a little dumb how they designed the output system. For some reason only Cubase and ProTools can have that multi route system with the mono tracks L and R. But for any other DAW they are like nah I’m good.
@Trashpanda_404

@@willytonezone was a PT guy forever, but with their silliness... It looks like the routing is a set feature with EZD3 though? Someone mentioned just dragging MIDI, then separating out per note/pitch. Started using Studio One, so don't know if it can like Logic. Someone else pointed out EZD will send every MIDI note, separating out things like rimshot, center, etc. You could merge different tracks, but honestly make a template and that's PRETTY AWESOME! Maybe a little time consuming, and narcissistic 🤣 but you could really define each sound. Then create aux to make your own OH and Ambient sounds. EZD is kinda...eh... on that. That uber custom sound could then be your very own, and set you apart from other stock VST sounds people are using.

Very helpful video! I have a question which I can't find answers anywhere. When using multi output, is there a way to route the individual hits? like side stick because it's in the same output of the snare top. I just only wanna put the reverb on side stick but it also affects the snare.
@willytonezone
@willytonezone Жыл бұрын
Hi! Thanks so much. There is a way to do that and maybe I should make a video on it. But basically you need to right click the snare side stick sound and route it to its own channel and then you can control the fader of just the side stick sound. So in Superior Drummer 3 right click on the snare and I believe you can manage the articulations and click create new channel. Hopefully that makes sense but that’s a great vid idea. Thanks you.

I just found the other way to do this. I click add instrument and navigate to the same set of drum and record again or use Grid Editor on this new track. I still can't find a way to separate any sub instruments 😭 but that works with cymbals because they use the same mic input. I'm gonna wait for your tutorial 👀

Hi ! Yes. You need to instantiate the plug in as a multi-output in order to see the plus button to create those tracks. So when you are putting Superior Drummer plug in insert on the midi track. Make sure you it’s the Multi-Out16x. Let me know if that helps.

The need to route every drum mic as stereo is extremely wasteful of resources and quickly exhausts the 16 stereo outputs of a standard sized kit with 3 rack toms and 2 floor toms. I really wish there was an easy button in the SD3 mixer to route all mics as mono before being bussed to the multi-channel stereo pairs to the driver so that I can easily just bus them as individual mics in Logic. I haven't found a video yet that describes how to do this. Yes, this compromises the ability to use bleed, pans, and presets within SD3, but for those of us who solely purchased SD3 for the samples and perhaps eKit tracking and want to do ALL our production work within Logic, it seems a reasonable ask of Toontrack. If anyone has a link that can show me how to do this, please let me know.
@willytonezone
@willytonezone 2 ай бұрын
It’s a little bit brutal yes but what you can do is if you use all the outputs. You can copy the same drum kit over to another track and get the rest of the outputs out of the second drum kit. If that makes sense? Unfortunately only protools and cubase have the functionality where you can mono the signals and everything makes sense. But logic and Ableton you have to do it the stereo way.
