My Rover 200vi has been incredibly frustrating as the electrics have been getting worse - frequently non working indicators, christmas tree dashboard and still no radio - so Ive been getting into the volts.

13:28 Sorry Matt, but you fixed the radio by changing the interior light, clock and radio fuse - I said before that I reckoned the clock and the radio shared a feed. All the loose interior light wire in the A pillar will do is bring the interior light on if it touches the chassis, because that's what the switch does.

actually the rovers have a weird thing where the light switch for the dash lights is wired into the radio so when the headlights are on the radio lights up with them! ive only ever came across that in rovers

Brilliant Matt, you saved £150+ for an auto electrician, who'd have thunk it that a relay could cause so many seemingly unrelated problems. Now I know why I preferred truck and bus electrics, everything was on its own return to the ground battery terminal/master switch, finding where a wire was broken in the loom was another story, just putting in a new one was often easier.

First of all, that earth point is on the bulkhead, on the inside behind that clock. Secondly, check indicator bulb fittings. The contacts on my ones seemed to electro-etched themselves away. The bayonet fixing doesn't have a very strong spring, so it can rattle and spark.

Great job, Matt. That appears to have been a triple fault, with fuse, earth, and flasher all being culprits, each contributing to the issue. I don't know who made the wiring looms for this car, but if it is a Bosch system, when one thing doesn't work right all sorts of weird and whacky things happen. It truly is bizarre how thing work at all with the multiplexed wiring. The entire system works off feedback. Get that wrong and there is no end to the issue. The issue with that fuse could easily be that the end of the wire for the door switch is shorting out while driving. That is what I would concentrate on next. Good luck. The wee old thing is coming on nicely.

No, it's not 'fixed'; stuff might work, for now, but it's not 'fixed'. Ask yourself: why would changing an indicator relay fix other problems? The answer is - it doesn't. Why did the indicator relay fail? Perhaps because it had parasitic current going through it that caused it to fail, due to duff earths somewhere. I once had a Lancia Gamma with bad electrics - it took me weeks, with the wiring diagram, to sort it out (bad earths being a major cause of the problems). Being a long time subscriber I suspect you don't have the patience for that sort of enterprise. Getting an actual auto electrician to look at it may save you pain in the long run. Just a thought Matt. Mike. PS: any chance of a P6B start-up any time soon?
