Im always worried my cars are going to fail catastrophically and expensively every MOT, and the Rover Coupe's test fills me with dread, after the Alfa 145 blew it spectacularly recently how bad will this be?

Your unbridled joy at getting the Tomcat past it’s MOT is infectious. That’s one of the many things that makes your channel so much more relatable than someone like STG or Shmee. Don’t get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoy those channels, but I’m more of a grass-roots, make-do-and-mend kind of enthusiast. Thank you for sharing your trials, successes, and failures with us.

How I miss the good old days when you could buy your Mot Tax plus the insurance cover note from the flat roofed pub down the road as it made things so easy lol. Joking aside it looks beautiful Matt and oil leaks are just free rustproofing.

The Tomcat is definitely a keeper on the Furious Fleet! My friend had a bright turquoise one years ago but it was a turbo and to this day it was hands down the best sounding turbo I’ve ever heard. It used to whoosh, chuff and chatter all the time and we never had the stereo on so we could just listen to it. It had old skool turbo lag which only made it even more fun! Also felt your elation at passing the MoT. It really is a day of reckoning for us petrol heads!

I've had my Volvo 480 tested for MOT this week: failed on emissions. So we reset the ECU and it was a pass. After idling for a couple of minutes, check engine light always comes on with a 2-1-2 error in the computer, which means no or faulty signal from oxygen sensor, but the error is gone if you restart the engine and the car drives well. So we bought a new one. Removed the battery to get to the oxygen sensor connector in the wiring loom. Found that someone plugged it into the wrong connector! No surprise it only passed MOT after ECU reset, it wasn't working at all! (Replaced the sensor anyway with a new Bosch sensor, the old one was a no-name)

That's getting to be a rare beast nowadays. The T series was a good strong engine, and makes a great noise. That interior looks almost mint too. If you ever sell it you won't be short of offers, great car mate, I'd be tempted to keep it too.

Genuinely always wanted one of these. I had a 414 a 214 and a 416 in my first 3 years of driving 15 years ago but the insurance was always too much and then it just never happened. I fancied a 620 turbo too. My dad had an 827 sterling or vitesse fastback. Shame what happened to rover

When I had my bike it once failed on the horn, luckily I was there while it was being tested, had a quick look and saw two wires dangling down, with no wires on the horn at all, I put two and two together and fixed the horn there and then, after which it passed. So it failed and passed in the same test.

Well done, Matt. I am very familiar with the car inspection worry. Luckily it does not apply now, but we used to have to do emissions testing on our cars. Of course the limits vary year to year, but also by Combined Gross Vehicle Weight Rating. What to do when the government computer will not accept the Engine Code in the VIN? Oops. That took 4 tries. After that it was convincing the government computer that the CGVWR really is 6,000 kilograms. All of this palaver was on my 89 Mercury Grand Marquis because it was factory fitted with the 5.8 litre engine and the heavy duty towing package. Glad the Tomcat passed. It is a lovely looking little beastie.

Rover’s were very good when it comes to passing MOT’s. I say were because they are old cars now….any failures now can be expected down to age. But going back a few years a 10 year old Rover was much more likely to pass an MOT than a 10 year old Ford, VW or BMW etc. The Honda style suspension was bulletproof, it just simply did not wear out, the only exception being the rear trailing arm bushes (after like 15 years). Electronics wise they were bullet proof too - engine sensors basically never fail on Rover’s. They used to fail emissions easily if not hot enough, but rarely would a sensor be at fault. In fact fitting non genuine sensors makes things worse. Superb cars.

Forget MOT lol. All you have to do in America is have your emissions tested. I know it’s stricter in your part of the world although. Nice Car! Glad it passed! Needs air in tires. In a previous video you said the paint wasn’t that good, on video it really looks good! Glad to see you driving it! I barely knew what a Rover was before your channel. Americans just don’t know.That Tomcat is a nice car. Kinda reminds me of E36 M3. Don’t know why lol? P71 owner from Chicago!!! Hoping to see yours on those roads soon. And that thing is squirrelly my M235i would out run it no sweat but that 4.6 liter V8 will spin tires and drink the gas. For as heavy as it is it’s rock solid. You’ll enjoy driving it!!! Made in Canada because their was no Gas Guzzler tax. Kinda a good thing. It’s dependable. But they are under powered by todays standards and are rather heavy and the reason for retirement. Last of the body on Frames.

Always a good day when a car sails the MOT. When you put the jump pack on, I was betting you forgotten to turn it on, that's my trick. As for the battery going flat, those Halfords ones are great with the 4 yr warranty but, leave them in the cold, even unattended and they fail. I store mine in the house when their not in uses plus, really they need to be doing 4k a yr min to last. I got them on my cars and 1 does 3k/yr, short trips mainly and the last one died only 3 months shy of 4yrs tho'. They replaced it with no hassle, important to keep receipt, I always order n collect so I get the email copy

Great news in regards to the Rover. I'm concerned about my daily in regards to it passing it's MOT. Main problem being the car's central locking playing up and all doors need to open and close for the test. Other problem is trying to start it when it's hot it'll just turn over for 20 seconds or so and after doing that at some point whilst driving it will cut out. Garage think it's the crankshaft sensor, which requires a new timing belt as it's under the belt. Failing that, who knows....The end may be near for the car as it just isn't worth much financially. Not sure what to do with it really, spend more fixing it or just cut ties and get something else which will mean more outlay but a much newer car to use everyday. Going to change the sensor and see where I go from there. Just don't want to keep spending on it.

@@furiousdriving I did that last year, it was just the passenger front door, but recently the two rear doors have started not unlocking or locking with the remote. I'll try to get them all unlocked for the MOT, so hopefully the car will go through and be on the road for another year, but I need (and I don't want to start guessing and changing bits) to resolve the hot start issue, ideally. Typical MK4 Golf door locking problems...

Hi Bud don't mean this in a bad way but you car not starting originally made me smile.. I had a Rover MGF se that had an issue I just could not be bothered and literally let the scrap guy have it freely.. But when you mentioned the braking system on this car.. My Mercedes CLK 320 Like the one you test drove is now In a bad way. The last mot it barely passed on the parking brake efficiency ? I've not really used car all year.. I think my battery was the cause because I put radio on used blowers and had lights on And I was driving home and lights dimmed and slowly I had flashing battery alternator fault (red alert). I gave up on it and asked on CLK forum if anyone fancied it..? I had one very generous guy offer me £160 and he said drive it from South Wales to Milton Keynes.. It really killed my interest in the car.. Reasons being I'd spent £260 in total on tyres part brake service and MOT .. And cost of fuel and train and bus fares home.. I'd see no car no cash. But today I asked about a quote from a factors place for calipers discs and pads.. The guy said why would you need new calipers..? He then replied saying it could be an ABS pump at fault..???? So that really bumped my Blood pressure up.. So I am now non the wiser and the garage my car gets work done for repairs likes the car.. So if I really consider my options once car is there in his garage he can actually say whatever he wants to frighten me into taking car on its new mot journey and basically call the shots..in other words buy the car himself knowing it wasn't a faulty ABS Pump or alternator.. but a few simple repairs at leisure he gets himself a lot of car for a chocolate bar or too.. What would you go and do...?

All depends on how sentimental the car is to you. There is no logic in what us car nuts do sometimes, the joy for me is fixing something and it working, however sometimes there are jobs I don't do as it's easier to farm them out, luckily I've an old mechanic who takes on the challenge, he is abit mad though and sometimes his price can be shocking 😭. The skill is being lost in mechanics and most are just plug in and play types who change parts in the hope of fixing things. Didn't mean to write a novel...

I panicked on the washer being near empty when I arrived at the MOT, lucky I had a bottle of water in the car.

It's a lot easier if you have vehicles old enough to have no electronics. Mine are all pre 1994 so they regularly sail through MOT's.

Yes...Matt..we DO know what an M.O.T means, we got them across the channel too you know ( hell we do!) but with the speed you and Mr Hubnut go to an M.O.T ( every two months?) I should think you both deserve a six-pack reduction as the M.O.T-stations must be really pleased. And.. congratulations 'cause I never thought a Rover would pass in one go, certainly not with a leak here and there.

I think I have enough for nearly 1 a month now! In Ohio where the Crown Vic came from they only have bi-annual emissions check, which I find incredible!

@@furiousdriving... I suppose in Am. it varies from state to state, maybe stricter in California and such or not...? and then...another thing: my mechanic, doing a fine job on many old cars now, is worried what he will be doing in twenty years time ( I overheard him the other day.): working on electric cars?

It is good to have a 7 days to fix a car if it fails the MOT. In Serbia we only get 3 working days, which is just about enough to order new parts, but not to change them... -_- For an Italian acceleration, 4.000 rpm is almost idle. :p

I'm surprised that people don't all get the inspection done on Friday. That gives 5 days for the retest, since Saturday and Sunday aren't considered business days. Here, at least, most shops and about all parts stores are open Saturday, and some even on Sunday, the extra two days to get and fit the new parts could be handy.
@DashCamSerbia
@DashCamSerbia 2 жыл бұрын
@@michaeltutty1540 Yes, that is the best option. But, the quality parts are mostlly in the online stores. Local parts shops usually only stock cheap junk on which they can charge high markups.
