The non flashing bottom piece used to be an amber signal but was removed from p71’s halfway through 1999. Those whelen mirror lights involve purchasing two separate things. First is the mirror housing, next are the lights. The lights are called Whelen 500 Series lights. Crown Vic’s only fit these. I recommend a set of chp mirror beams then purchasing the 500 series.

The taillight turn signals were only amber for the first year of CVPI production and were removed for the 1999 model year (and removed from the civilian cars in 2004), probably to save FoMoCo a few cents. It was pretty common for emergency equipment up-fitters to install strobe lights in those un-used lenses. The 'extra wire' in the corner light on the passenger side is actually just a tube that is there to let moisture out of the housing. The reason one corner light has no hole in the bottom is probably because originally the corner lights would have been wired with white strobe lights as part of the emergency lighting added to the car, and at some point the corner light on the drivers side cracked and was replaced after the emergency lighting, radios, etc. were removed. The under hood light has a gravity switch which can be pretty finicky. It's suppose to be positioned so the bulb is facing forward so the gravity switch can work properly (and the little plastic pin goes into the hood to keep it in position). You probably just have to pull it out and pop it back in, into the two holes again. The wires on the trunk were part of an optional lighting package if I remember correctly for lights that would turn on when the trunk is open as a roof mounted lightbar would be otherwise be blocked when the trunk is open (I've seen them on other CVPI's of that vintage, they looked like this kzbin.info/www/bejne/qKPEd4WmeseBrJo). Also, if you intend to add cruise control, I do believe at least one brake light bulb (third brake light or taillights) needs to be a proper incandescent bulb and not a LED, as for some reason the cruise cancel is activated by the brake light resistance in the cruise module (but since you are handy, you could add voltage resistors to mitigate this issue). Side note, you can still buy those front license plate brackets NOS on ebay for around $20 USD. Anyhow, hope some of that info is helpful, stoked you finally got your dream car. Cheers from N.J. USA.

Just an FYI the civilian 2nd gen crown Victoria and the very very early 2nd gen P71's used amber turn signals at the rear using that area underneath the main taillight area. In mid year for the 1999 P71 they switched to using the brake light as a turn signal and hollowed out that darkened area for strobe emergency light use. If you want later down the road, you can just get a set of Civilian taillights and they will have amber turn signals in that area, you might need to do some rewiring though. My CVPI is an early '99 model so it uses the Europe friendly setup, and in my opinion, is also a lot safer.

Just incase you didn’t know, you may run into an issue with the LED turn signals still hyper flashing even after you finally get all 4 installed as the LEDs draw less power and the system things they’re dead bulbs. The easiest fix for this is replacing the turn signal relay found under the dash with an LED compatible one. Love your Vic videos!!!

I had this problem on my MK1 Fiesta, it would actually refuse to work with 4 led indicator bulbs and go stupid quick with 2 , many hours of head scratching later and I figured out the problem... 7:25 There was an option on those cars for cornering lights, to illuminate the path to the side when the turn signals are activated (and a few seconds after they stop). You might be able to get a pair of lamp housings which support that option and put some bulbs in to act as side markers and to provide some side illumination during turns. On the other hand, I don't know what's behind that yellow reflector patch on the sides; maybe there is a way to just put bulbs behind them and light up that section.

The two plugs behind that panel to the left of the steering wheel, those are for the Power Adjustable Pedals and Traction Control. When the car is ordered, and those two options are not opted for, the buttons are not put into the panel. They also do not put the powered pedals on the car. You can get an adjustable indicator relay from Amazon for led indicators which allows you to adjust the flash rate, I have them on a couple of bikes that I put led indicators on and you don't have resistors to try to hide, keeps it looking standard. Shame you can't separate the lens off the unit and you could epoxy a divider in to split the lower part of the fitting. I'm with you for trying to get everything in the original units, always looks a wee bit sad when you have to hang a fog light off the bumper. I'm sure there are owners around who have addressed the problem, time for some plagiarism from them? 😂

I did only clip a wire in the front. I did buy another light housing for the taillights with amber glass. Not necessary to do this. Ford Crown vic is one the most durable car ever. I love it. For my old Dodge, I will go back to the red turn/brake signal and reconnect the yellow/amber marking ligts, backupligts and cornering lamps. Will do the same with my US RV. early model crown Vics have amber turn signals where your blanks are. 1998-2004 Vics used amber turn signals. I would run a wire from the front turn signals to the back to avoid the amber lights coming on with the brakes. the turn/brake light function is controlled under the dash so both feed down the same wire. so running an independent turn signal wire from the front is your best choice.

A little late, but the trick sits in the relay, and one need to change/rewire the blink relay. Think about it, you need a ground, and a positive for each function, and you got 1. Rear light 2, brake lights, 3.blinkers. that's 4 feeds, but you only have 3 wires per bulb. Blink/brake is merged in the blink relay, it's a special relay that can be changed to a euro spec one.

If you look when the rear indicator is flashing, the inner sector isn't illuminated at all, meaning you could have used it for a fog lamp. You don't need a momentary switch which resets when the ignition goes off, nor does it need to restrict the fog lamp from illuminating only when the main beam in on.

For the side marker blinker, If you take the power wire from the side marker lights and put it into a 5 pin where when the relay is off, it works like normal, use the + wire from the turn signal as the trigger, and then ground the relay, it will flash with the turn signal. The 5th pin on the relay can be used as a flasher for anything else you might want to put onto the car. If you want to get rid of hyper flash, there is a 2 wires that are in the steering column that can be cut and a LED friendly flasher relay can be added. For Drl, if you use a + wire that kicks on with the car, use a diode, and relay to tap into the + safety/side maker lights. Using the wire on the lcm side as input and the + wire you just cut from the safety + as the trigger. The Drl setup will not have the headlights on. But it works otherwise. If you hook up the Drl right, the headlights and safety should work even with the key out.

I know this as when I went through the process, my retest document only had a shortened version, which is normal, but no good for first registration purposes. If it passes, there won't be an issue, as the full VIN will be there. In my case, the tester had to 're-MOT' the car by creating another brand new entry into the system. One more thing, I think your headlamp diffusers will be dipping the wrong way. You may need to use some stickers?

In the USA Chrysler did a similar thing with the tail lights on that van: early models (01 - 03?) had separate turn and brake lights - albeit both were red. After that they switched to a cheaper brake/turn combined unit. Now that I’ve seen you do it I want to source some earlier separate bulb units, get green bulbs and wire them in for separate amber turn signals!Dammit Matt! I don’t need another project.

Rear indicator/tail lights must have been legal then. Front indicators could also be white then. Indicators were also not a legal requirement as everyone had to know all the hand signals for the Driving Test and expected to use them at some point during the test.

So you actually can make the side marker lights flash with the turn signal. If I remember correctly all you really have to do is connect the ground wire on the marker to the positive wire on the turn signal bulb and then the side marker will flash too. Supposedly it’s an easy mod. They call it the Crown Vic blinker mod. Also that’s a cool idea for mirror turn signals! Never thought of that.

Over here in Britain, we have to have things called ‘side repeaters’. They are amber lights that flash with the turn signals, and are mounted on the side of the car, usually the front wing, so the turn signals can be seen by a car driving along by the side of you.

Love the vids. So interesting to see what all you have to do to get it ready. I have a 2001 LX non police spec. The bottom holes on the tail light are my blinkers and it is orange. From what i have seen the harness goes in about a foot and then there is a plug. My harness has 4 bulbs for the sperate blinkers.

Your best bet was to use the LX wiring for the separation of the indicators. You can go as far as getting the taillamp housing, but modifying the original lamps isn't a bad idea either. Loved this video btw. Very informative.

Worth pointing out that if you have a bench grinder, or indeed angle grinder, you can not only sharpen those spade (drill) bits, you can adjust their width and thus the size of hole they make. Some cone-shaped hole cutters are a good addition to the bodging tool-set.

You might buy a Haines service manual for that car. For the rear lights you might need to go up to the signal light switch to isolate the brake from the signal indicator. I have been contemplating bringing a military Hummve into the EU. I want orange signals on the back.

Actually it was the early production (for that generation) Crown Victoria's that had the amber lower, 1998 to some time in 2002. I suspect that Ford wanted that generation of their products to be internationally compatible. All their North American vans, Crown Victoria and others had the amber sections.

About the tail lights and the unused portion at the bottom. Some years of Crown Victoria had separate turn signals with Amber lenses. That really would be the easy way. As for the hyperflashing, get the electronic flasher for a Trailer Tow package car. Get both. They are about $5 each. If the one for the 4 way emergency flashers sticks the wrong way, you have no brake lamps. I suspect the problem with the rear fog is that the relay itself is not run to earth so it is not closing to complete the circuit

A little off the topic of cars Matt but I also have that little SpyderCo bug. I also have a larger one which incidentally is also UK legal.as it's non locking but actually feels pretty sturdy to use unlike some other non locking blades. Really useful bit of kit to have.

Hello from america I actually have a whelen 90 watt strobe pack, headlight flashers, and clear taillights, indicator, and license plate bulbs (and they all flash) in my 2011 cvpi they are blinding and illegal which is why i rewired them up to a switch on the inner fender under the hood i keep them off while i drive and turn them on at car meets to scare everyone lol My cvpi came with all kinds of left over police equipment when i bought it the previous department only took out what they could easily take out and left the rest of it so all the wiring for sirens, multiple power hookups, a gps receiver, body camera battery, camera in the back seat, the plastic rear seat, rear window cages, rear divider, bullet proof truck pack, among many other things were left intact this car needs only about 2 or 3 things to be put back into service if it must And my cvpi is very odd because out of all the options selected on this car (and i know because i found the build sheet for it) the department which bought it (New Castle County Police Department) opted for it to not be fleet keyed which i find very weird

I feel your frustration with the lights! When I moved from PA to Maryland, I had to have the headlights and front fog lamps rewired for inspection. In PA high beams and fog lamps could be on together. In Maryland if the high beam was on it had to switch the fog lamp off, regardless of switch position. GRRRRR.

Great work, that's a beautiful Crown Victoria! As you experienced yourself it can be quite a headache to figure out custom wiring solutions. Given how liberal the UK is in terms of car modifications, I'm quite surprised you'd have to go through this trouble and have amber/orange indicators and add fog lights. Here in Switzerland the rules are so strict for any type of modification. However, the US style red indicator combined with brake light is legal. I actually went the opposite way of you on my Firebird and went from the standard tailllights with separate yellow indicator to the Trans Am version with brake & indicator combined.

seen various comments about hyperflashing, buy some ballast resistors from ebay, securely mount to the metal near the rear lights, wire as though a second/third bulb in the indicator circuit, keep all changes that you've made in the same area, if you decide to go back to incandescent, it will be easy to revert back to uk spec oem. Cheap chinese leds burn out, osram or phillips leds use better current limiting resistors in their bulbs.

Hi Matt, just a couple of comments from the North American point of view. First, those headlights are indeed very common over here. Next, you can buy rear clusters with an amber lens at the bottom, which I think are for the indicators. Maybe they were used on higher trim spec cars, I'm not sure. Finally, I found you can also buy replacement mirrors with LED flashers in them, rather than modifying yours to fit the Whelans. If you need any help from this side of the Pond, let me know any time...

Was your auto electrician Vince again? I used him once and then he didn't bother turning up the second time. Didn't bother answering his phone etc, then a couple of days later got a text back with an excuse. I called Dave Patrick at Sittingbourne who told me to call another auto electrician who came out within a couple of days, gave a quote and did all the work within a couple of hours for the same as their quote. Looking forward to seeing the Crown Vic on the road.

Matt, you'll also need a warning light (or tell tale) to show when the rear fog light is on. Doesn't need to be anything fancy, a plain yellow light with a sticker beside reading "rear fog" would do, or you can source one from a kit car supplier with the rear fog light symbol. Not having this is an MOT fail, section 4.9.1 of the UK car MOT manual (available on the .gov website) I do think your relay box is faulty, though. That, or the wiring instructions are really very wrong. Is your relay box set up such that you can turn the rear fog light off again with another press of the momentary switch? Or would you need to turn the headlights off to deactivate the rear fog? I think the latter would not comply with the regulations.

Sounds like you need a multimeter! A relay should be easy to test, the coil part should give a reading on the ohms scale, connect 12 volts to those terminals and you should hear a click. Don't American cars have a continuous orange light at the front? I would have thought that needs to be disconnected for UK.

Had to to exchange to Omron mini relay in the ''blackbox'' Now its works fine. I have been the unlucky man here.

The headlights of a Crown Vic are seared into the psyche of generations of Americans. I can tell from a half mile away at night if there’s a cop just by the shape of the lights. And, even though the Crown Vic has (sadly) been phased out in most police squads nationwide, millions of us will still instinctively tap our brakes when we see one. We’ve been conditioned 😂
