The video illustrates the active and passive safety features built into all Volkswagen Transporter, Caravelle and LT models. The tests geographically illustrate the effects of crashes with stationery objects and other vehicles, and in roll over situations. The importance of wearing seatbelts is also clearly illustrated.

Once had a lady do a u turn in front of me while driving my orange 1984 T3 camper. I was doing about 50kmph. I braked, turned the van into her back door so the driver’s corner took the full force, closed my eyes, swore, and held on as her Merc wrapped around the front and we pushed her across the road onto the other side. My wife and I in the front, had seat belts and were fine. The two in the back didn’t and flew forward into our seats, but luckily apart from bad bruising were okay. Anything not tied down flew into the front, my wife was hit in the head by a torch, but the fittings in the van were fine. We lost both headlights and some body damage along the front. The Merc however was written off as it was twisted, but the lady got out with a cut finger from her shattered windows. A week later, the van was back on the road, all nice and shiny and we carried on our trip through Germany. The only change, the two in the back always wore there seat belts and I would go into a cold sweat when ever I had to pass a silver Merc parked on the side of a road. Lessons we learnt as shown in this video. Wear seatbelts, don’t leave stuff lying around and the VW could T-bone a Merc and still come away smiling. 😄

Btw, nobody says that mercs are indestructible in accidents! If the rolls were switched, I'm sure the VW wouldn't be on the road and the people inside might have more than a cut finger.

Compared to the previous (T2 Kombi), this generation is a revelation in safety - much less how it compares to the _original_ Type 2 (T1 generation Kombi) from the 50s! I don't think today's roads present a greater safety risk to vehicles from this era. In fact, modern roads are better. Modern vehicles sharing the road, are also less of a risk factor. Increasingly, they have collision avoidance and other safety systems which all help to make driving an old car on contemporary roads, less of a problem than ever. 🙂 Unless of course we consider the stress and cost of repairs and pets after a collision in one of these old units. 😬

Reading the comments and seeing all the people sharing their T3 crash stories I feel like I have to tell mine too; well not 100% mine as I was only a couple years old and in the passenger seat but my mom was driving her VW T3 bus up the road and was blinded by the sun, she drove into another more modern car of which I don't remember the model and made it roll over its side into a ditch, the other car was completely twisted and totaled but lucky the airbags inflated and all the people involved where fine, where as to the VW T3 it was LITTERALY COMPLETELY and I say it again COMPLETLY unharmed, as I recall not even the front bumper had even a scratch on it and we drive our beloved bulli to this day

10:00 -- The passenger seat breaks loose from its mountings on the left side and is only held in place by the right side. If the seat fully broke off would the dummy have been sliced in half by the seatbelt?

@no1DdC
@no1DdC 6 жыл бұрын
It would not. Strong by the standards of the 1980s is extremely weak by today's standards. High strength, cold formed steel just didn't exist back then, not to mention the advances in the engineering department. Case in point, take a look at this video of an old Volvo crashing into a modern supermini: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m57XfX-sjdelfNU
@no1DdC
@no1DdC 6 жыл бұрын
It's not been debunked. The video was earnest, many commenters on the other hand are a bunch of paranoid Volvo fans who can not and never will accept that old cars are worse than new ones in virtually every respect (but especially in regards to safety, reliability and economy), especially not old cars they like. The car did not have rust on structural parts, the engine was present (see the red engine block, which is clearly visible in multiple shots) and the overall misunderstanding car engineering on display is staggering. Do they, do you honestly believe that engineers have been twiddling their thumbs since then? Do you think are car with such an abysmal structural integrity would be even legal to sell today? The same kind of nonsensical conspiratorial thinking was present with the famous crash test video of an old Chevrolet against a new one, by the way.

My parents owned TWO T-3 Vanagons (Campmobile conversions) and like all VW vans, they were suicide in a front-end collision scenario. My current T-4 transverse I-5 engined Weekender isn't much better, the engine/transaxle will rollup under the seats with your legs and they'll call you "Stubby" after they cut you out. The floorpan of Vee-Dubs has always been a weakness in a crash, you just accept if you buy a VW van/transporter/wagon from the beginning of production. Sprinters and Ram Vans and Nissans have the below-the floor engine and a real frame and nearly triple the mass of steel in them. Funny how the US won't allow VW to import the T-5, ain't it???
@patrickpowers4533
@patrickpowers4533 7 ай бұрын
Its not that the US doesn’t allow them to import the T-5, its that the T-4 had poor sales in the US market and VW didn’t want to take the financial risk of selling a car that the public didn’t want. That’s starting to change now though with VW offering their new electric van in the US.

If they wanted to make it safe why didn't they give them better brakes, I had an 84 Vanagon and it had solid front rotors, non vented and the most woefully pitiful drum brakes on the back.

Something doesn’t add up here. I think VW may have altered some of their vehicles for these tests. The VW Vanagon/Bus/Transporters were not that good in crashes. These vehicles are made to look like tanks.

2:10 I thought "crumple zone" means there is a "zone" that "crumples" and absorbs the collision energy so the people in the car don't have to. When a flat-nosed VW collides with other things, it doesn't have much of a zone in front to crumple, if the front end doesn't crumple much so the cabin can hold its shape, that makes the declaration extremely fast; if it crumples a lot it cause the cabin to deform and crushes the human, neither is good for survival. Yet they tell us "this feeling is not justified" :)

"in most cases the speed is reduced to 50 to 80 kph by braking" ... yeah, but the other car won't be stationary. Framing this 70kph crash test that way is misleading af. It suggests country road or motorway speeds, but simulates more like a 35kph head-on collision in town.
@phoenixman8569
@phoenixman8569 Жыл бұрын
in the first crash the crumple zone did indeed absorb most of the impact, but with the lack of air bags the dummies head hit the steering wheel so hard, the driver would have still been killed, and the so called limo is really an early 80s buick skylark...

These manufacturers were not even present with vans in Germany back then. The first ones they brought to Germany were actually with no bonnet either. It's a Bedford Blitz, a left hand steering version of the Bedford CF. You can actually see it as runaway catcher in the background when they bust that Buick.
