--row based format- rows are written in series writing is easy but for select it has to scan the entire data even for subset of columns suitable for faster writes suitable for more writes does do well in compression --column based file format structure of column based format file if subset of columns are req, then only that column set can be read suitable for data warehouse queries writing is not easy suitable for faster read suitable for more reads does well with compression due to specialized format for each column set --usecases row based: suitable for faster writes suitable for more writes does not do well in compression column based: suitable for faster read suitable for more reads does well with compression due to specialized format for each column set
