As a lefty, I throw the thumber when someone makes a cut and is looking for a righty hammer as the flight paths are basically the same.

I caught a swing on the right wing in zone with one hand above my head then thumber cross field to a mid without switching grip. Best throw of my life

Love this video! I spent a whole ultimate season learning to throw a lefty scoober and feel super cool whenever I pull it off. So worth it

thumber: the more catchable forehand blade.. thrown well, it settles in nicely at the catch point... but about that thrown well part :-)

For the "thumbmmer": if the defense forces you on your left (considering that you throw from your right hand) and you want to center the disc, it can be pretty useful. Also, if there's cross wind that makes the hammer hard, try the thumbmmer it could be better because of is trajectory.

OscarElite depending on the situation, as Rowan explained, it is really useful. I use more push passes than hammers (I play mostly indoors, though).

push pass is preferred throw for a short pass to your flick side -- comes in nice and soft for the receiver. Like he says, its hard to throw a soft flick short.

One of my teammates threw a full field thumber huck on a day with a 20+mph downwind. Flick hucks were just sailing out the back, but the thumber floated and dropped perfectly.

I think a 20 mph downwind IS the sweetspot for this throw, good call!!

I throw the thumber to the same spots/cuts where a lot of throwers use a bladey OI flick. The potential advantages of the thumber there are (1) wind hitting the top of the disc instead of the underside, and (2) it's possible to control the shape of the thumber just like the shape of a hammer, so you can make it finish flat and have more margin for error and room to catch than with a more bladey throw. I'd say the main disadvantage is that most of us throw our flicks all the time and our thumbers rarely, so we tend to have better feel for even the bladiest flicks than we do for our thumbers.

I've thrown thumbers in game, being trapped on the sideline forced backhand, doing a cross field thumber to the back right corner of the end zone. It can also be good against a cup if you're comfortable throwing it, or if you're being forced backhand and have a wide open cut on the break side but can't get the forehand off for some reason.
@DavidBerg
@DavidBerg 5 жыл бұрын
The only throw I've used in a game that you didn't mention here is the upside-down backhand. I can get a lot more snap on it than my scoober and cut through the wind better. I probably wouldn't need it if I had a better hammer, but as is, the upside-down backhand comes out quicker and hurts my shoulder a lot less.
@RowanMcDonnell
@RowanMcDonnell 5 жыл бұрын
Ahhh I completely agree. This one can come out with a lot of power... good call!!
@kirkNJ

the problem with the upside-down backhand is that you have to change your grip, so its telegraphed to the marker you are going to throw it.
@piped0wn
@piped0wn Жыл бұрын
@@kirkNJ here's the progression: 1. Fake flick 2. Switch to chicken wing grip and fake it 3. Quick switch to backhand pivot while simultaneously turning the chicken wing upside down into the upside down backhand 4. Profit

the way i think of a thumber is a flick side hammer. cuz you normally throw hammers to the backhand side bc it bends over there easier. (it’s harder to throw a hammer straight) normally used to get to the break side if you’re forced flick. it’s easier to throw a thumber straight. but you could just use a blade and get the same result as they bend the same way
@Rakkerrr
@Rakkerrr 5 жыл бұрын
True, you could also use a forehand blade to break that backhand force, but perhaps you caught the disc in undergrip and don’t have much time to switch the grip. Besides a thumber comes in a little bit flatter, so it’s easier to catch than a blade. Or easier to throw with sidewind ... if you have a good thumber.

Breaking the force with a thumber to the open side like a leftie hammer gives a nice floaty disc for people to run onto. Been doing that for many years. A fun one on our team is to really hoof the thumber like a huge hammer most of the way down the pitch. The advantage of a thumber over a hammer is its easier to throw an invert and have it turn over in the air, this can break the force and curve back in and come down like a knife of you want, a fun endzone play

I’ve seen the thumbed used in pulls (not full court... 4 vs 4 or 5 vs 5 as it’s not easy to catch and it floats and keeps going further when it hits the ground so it goes out of bounds. Defence has more time to set. From what I’ve seen. Btw, thanks for showing in-game throws. I remember asking you a clip of you throwing some of those weird ones in a game. I happened to see one or two the year after, more lately. Nice! PS, you’re my favourite player although I root for the Royal.

Love the videos and we actually met when your team played Catholic U. I've always thrown a behind the back but it's a backhand not a flick. It's with a lot of OI and you have to overthrow ur target a bit so it flattens out but I have actually used it before in games and it does well. It's kind of a replacement for a lefty backhand. On the goal line. Try it out and let me know what you think

One of the advantages of the thumber is that it flies really fast. Therefore, if we compare to an equal length flick, you have to respect it farther downfield as you have less time to make up the distance as a defender. Also, it's kind of surprising as it's an unconventional throw.

Thumbers are basically used the same as the offhand scoober imo. Great for if you're trapped near the goal line on the force side and you have a teammate on the opposite side of the endzone. Unfortunately I'm lefty so I dont get to throw this with the usual flick mark, but fortunately I can just scoober/hammer instead :)
