Awesome! Seems to provide a quite substantial resistance.

I tried with just the fins, but it kept spinning too fast. I had a stationary bike stand that you clamp a normal bicycle for riding inside. I took it apart a attached it to the front. This allows me to adjust the resistance.

Excellent. How did you shape the seat?

I started with a router at different depths, then used a small table belt sander, mostly by eye, no real pattern.

@@kennyroberts4964 Thanks. I don't have a router, will see if I can get one from a friend then. Cheers.

it is really fine. Could you send the measurements of the wooden part (base, seat, pedals, ....) Thanks
@pkosmasjr Жыл бұрын
it's a concept2 Model A! very cool :) any idea how many hours/meters you've put on it since completion? you could estimate that you're getting 5-10 meters per stroke, and at 20 strokes a minute (decent estimate, easy math) , you're doing ballpark 10,000 meters per hour of rowing. Is it getting much use?
@kennyroberts4964 Жыл бұрын
It get pretty good use, about 20 mins 2 to 3 time a week. Another project in the works is a sensor hooked up to an arduino to calculate the speed and distance, then hook that up to a rowing video that would adjust the speed of the playback base on rowing speed. At least thats the goal.

How does the wheel keep spinning in the same direction as you come back down? It looks like the chain only engages the wheel on the concentric/pull phase
@kennyroberts49643 жыл бұрын
It using the same mechanics that a geared bike uses. The bicycle wheel doesn't stop when you stop pedaling and most geared bikes allow you to pedal backwards without stopping the wheel. On the pull stroke the gear is engaged, on the return stroke it is not. Hope that helps.

I have most of these parts. Do you have more details like photos or drawings? I am wondering how you are keeping the chain from falling off the cassette and how you are getting the chain to recoil.
@kennyroberts49644 жыл бұрын
The pull cable is made up of 3 parts. The chain, 1ft of surgical tubing (from some exercise bands), then ¼” rope. From the pull handle it raps around the bicycle wheel gears, then through the derailer. The derailer is what keeps it on the right gear. This one is broken, but I can use the adjustment screws to keep it pretty much where I want it. If you find one that isn’t broken, you mount the gear changer somewhere and change gears if you wanted. The other thing the derailer provides is some spring back when on the return stroke. From the derailer it goes through a pulley just under the footrest. Then to two pulleys at the back. The 1 ft of surgical tubing comes right up to the first of the two pulleys in the back. The rope starts at the first pulley goes through the second pulley which is set just higher than the top part of the rolling platform, then it is tied to the back of the seat. Between the derailer, the surgical tubing and the seat moving forward, this all helps to pull the chain back. Since I don’t have a guide between the sprocket and the bar, you have to be somewhat deliberate in keeping the chain straight on the way back. The main issue is that the distance that the rope is pulled back when you include arms and back is farther than the distance the seat movement alone and would not bring the chain back fast or far enough. I can’t see a way to add photos or diagrams, so I hope this explains it better.

You do know you can buy those in line skate wheels and bicycle wheels in a shop? You don't have to destroy that bike or those skates...
@kennyroberts49648 ай бұрын
The bike was free sitting in neighbors back yard about to be thrown out, with broken shifter and rusted chains, but good enough for what I wanted. You can get the wheels for the inline skate, but not the mountings. They were also from a garage sale for $2. Both items were mainly cut up and used for their mounts. So for this project free or cheap was the way to go. Even the wood was from left over projects or things I already had around the house. Nothing was purchased just for this project.
