Not sure about the reindeer, but huskies are bred to pull sleds. They actually like it. They are classed as a "working" dog breed. Same as like a sheep dog. They need the exercise or they get bored. As long as they are treated well, fed etc, then going for a sleigh ride with huskies wouldn't be hurting them one bit :)

The reindeer live free during the spring and summer months, they are half domesticated animals. And when you see them wild, they still belong to someone. They are not a "wild animal" in Finland 🙂 like most horses are not a wild animal in a lot of countries.

This is interesting, I read that they can go a distance of up to 3000 miles a year if they wanted to, how to do the people ever find them and get them back?

@@RoxiandMatt usually they come back to the place where they know they can get food (owners feed them) and they have gps tracking sim so owners can see where they are

I just want to point out that all the reindeer you see in Lapland belong to someone. There are no wild reindeer and the reindeer herders have to round them up occasionally for ear markings and stuff. Even the reindeer you saw don't probably stay in pens all the time. The reindeer of Lapland have great meaning for Sami people. It's their livelyhood
@emilia63175 жыл бұрын
Reindeer are actually half - wild domestic animals and at least most of them get to roam free on herds during the summertime. The owners gather the reindeer again in autumn. I recommend exploring about reindeer and reindeer herding if you are interested in reindeer and how they live the rest of the year. :)
@RoxiandMatt5 жыл бұрын
Ive been reading up on them and it is interesting. so they're free to roam during low season, used for sleigh rides and other attractions during tourist seasons and then killed for meat and fur products.
@emilia63175 жыл бұрын
Yes, they get to roam free most of the year. In summertime you can actually see reindeer herds on the roads in Lapland. :) And I believe that some of the herders let them roam in the winter also, or at least I have seen reindeer sometimes roaming on winter also when I have visited Lapland. Not all of the reindeer are used on tourist attractions in the winter, I think it depends much from the herders - some own tourist attractions, some don't. Some of the reindeer are indeed also killed for the meat. I belive they don't kill reindeer for the fur, but of course they use it also when the animal is killed for the meat. I understand that If you are a vegetarian and resist in general killing animals for the meat, that sounds cruel but actually reindeer get to live quite a good life before that compared to many other animals. And I believe that actually more reindeer get killed by other animals than by humans. I'm not a reindeer herder so I don't know all the facts about reindeer, but I wanted to clear that they actually get to live quite free compared to othet domestic animals. :)
@emilia63175 жыл бұрын
I think that reindeer have also been pulling sleighs for hundreds of years already so they should be quite used to it.

As many people already say, there are more reindeer than humans in Finland. You can see reindeer wandering wild in Lapland all year long, also in winter time. In Finland, animals are treated very well. Reindeer belongs always for somebody/owner and they know how to "go home" by themself when it comes that time in autumn, and then owner make calculations that how many reindeer are left (predators such as wolves and bears hunts reindeer). Some have commented that no animals should be used to entertain people, etc. So, for example, do you not accept riding horses? Reindeer are pretty much in the same position as horses in Finland. But like I say, reindeers are free in the nature most of the time. Those few reindeer that you see in those places are trained. And even if you don't see reindeer thoughts then it would be worthwhile perhaps to ask their owners for their opinion. Reindeer are very human-friendly animals, and even come to pick up the sleigh in order to pull! And yes, we eat reindeer meat but it isn't like every day food. And many of you eat horse meat,it is common in Europe, you don't even know it many times because it's mixed with cow or pig meat. There is horse meat in burgers, in salami etc. One in eight salami products on sale in Britain contains horse meat. Yes, if you are vegan or something like that you can find that nasty but if you eat any meat then I don't know WHY reindeer is any diffent? But well, yes, it is different because NO reindeer will ever live in the place of production and they can eat in the wild and live in the wild. And then I have to ask that when you go to the Artic Circle (=Santa Claus Village) then how did you not meet the Father Christmas? There is a place where he gets to meet and chat, it is that Santa Claus cottage in middle of that Santa Village. As well as the Main Post Office where you can see all the world's letters to Santa Claus and a really lovely husky park with husky rides like 100 meters away, a reindeer ride, snowmobile rides across the road etc etc. That Santa Claus Village visit looks like you didn't get everything you can do there! There is no ice skating place, but there is ice skating place in the middle of Rovaniemi city centre, near of playground called Heppapuisto, clue for those who read comments and are wondering :) But I am happy you visited in Finland and I'm happy you like it, after all! I just hope that people can understand that there is so much more, I hope that you can come back and maybe you can go to see some real nature! Did you know that in Finland all that tapwater is from natural source, all tap water is natural spring water and you can visit some springs and water sources and there is so much wild nature, like in Rovaniemi, if you drive 10km away from city centre, you can find foamy waterfalls and hiking routes etc

As well we have to remember Reindeers are used for pulling like huskies as transport in some countries, just like horse are used or were used as a mode of transport in the UK and other countries. The reindeer you saw tied down was pulling the sledge (sleigh?). I'm pretty sure it's tied down just for the time it's used in the reindeer safari. So it's not like they are 'really' exploited in this country - not a very pro estimation... They have much more freedom than other domesticated animals. Do you think the huskies are really exploited? They are in leash very often, like isn't leashing dogs wrong then also? Plus cows, chickens, pigs etc. - the typical domestic animals are much more controlled - in this country, and in UK likely even more - at least in larger volumes. Well, I think those that are trained for the rides, like for the tourists, are kept by the house. But majority of them run free most of the year. They are much more free than the afore mentioned cows etc. The Sámi (indigenous nations in the northern parts of the Nordic countries and northwest of Russia), they have depended on the reindeers for thousands of years, so they live a very symbiotic life with them - they don't overexploit them: they would suffer themselves. Once they need to kill one reindeer, nothing goes wasted, all the parts of the animals can be used somehow. This is how the native people all around the World treat animals - hunted or domesticated: if you kill the animal, respect it by letting nothing go wasted. American Natives do so with their hunt animals: bufaflo, dear etc., Or Inuits especially - because in the Arctic there really aren't any vegetation to eat: they get thos eVitamins by eating the intestines of their prey animals. It's the urban man who doesn't get this always: so we should see how those people do, who have lived with certain animals for thousands of years. Most reindeers are semi-wild: most of the year they run free in the wild. But all the reindeers in the Nordic countries belong to some herder: they have ear marks. Those times when the owners need to roundr them up, they can usually quickly find them, because they move certain routes looking for food, and the farmers know pretty well the options where the reindeers can get food that time of year. Plus I think they 'cheat' with satellite tracking :) When they have tracked the reindeers, they chase them inside fences, where they count the calves born that year, and give them the ear marks of the owner. There can be other owners' reindeers inside the fences - but they can be recognized by the ear marks. And if they have calves, they follow their mother. So they won't get ear marked. Well - don't know how often that nistake happens in a hurry :)

@@kellywildman7138 Surely you still have some sort of a pasture or an area surrounded by a fence and you don't let your animals go wherever they please? That much is probably a given or you wouldn't be able to gather them up to a barn. Obviously you have no idea how do they treat reindeers and huskies in Finland. There is not such a thing like wild reindeer. Second of all huskies love to be active in a nature. You should have maybe ask someone in a farm you visited how things really are instead of making things up in your head to get some likes and making people confused. I bet someone there would have love to explain to you the reality of reindeer's and huskie's lifes all year around. Thanks.

The reindeer get to roam free during spring and summer. In winter it's quite difficult for them to find nutrition from the nature and wild beast are a big threat, so some of the reindeer herders keep the reindeer behind fences to advance their survival over winter.
