Something I REALLY appreciate about this show is how it explores the unaddressed emotional flaws/baggage of both Scott and ESPECIALLY Ramona. After the 7th Evil Ex in a row, it becomes hard to ignore the one constant in each relationship. By humanizing the Evil Exs, the whole thing becomes far more complex and interesting.

This was one of my favorite fights in the show. From the beautiful animation to the storytelling between Ramona and Roxie’s past, this and Matthew vs Gideon’s fight really sold me on accepting this new change of pace for this story.
@nicklegos5 ай бұрын
Changing Roxie to be heavier like her book counterpart was a good choice. It adds that fear she was undesirable in a Physical way by playing to how people tend not to feel beautiful when they aren’t fitting the standard. Roxie was never fat but she is by no means fit and skinny in the flashbacks and it was good to properly see them this time around.

Easily my favorite episode in the series I think. This fight was ridiculously well animated and Roxy had the most compelling ex story IMHO. It helps that The voice actor chemistry is really good. The reveal with Gideon and Julie at the end was a nice cherry on top.

Having Ramona have to deal with the shitty way shes treated people was a great narrative choice. Some of the exes like Matt and Gideon were bad people, but Roxy and Lucas werent bad to Ramona, she treated them badly because she could. Having her have to face up to that was great and it gave her really rewarding character growth

It's nuts how different everyone is from the movie despite having the same exact cast. A+ to all the actors for not phoning it in. Mae Whitman really flexed her VA experience here. I never noticed how the movie version of her is a bit basic by comparison and played up as a joke character, that being she's the only girl ex that was also a bonkers lesbian. You really get a sense of her rage and bitterness here, along with her shock in finally getting validation. Just a top tier performance. I do hope the entire cast stick around if a Season 2 happens because they did wonders bringing these characters to life.
@TheJadedJames5 ай бұрын
I was mentally comparing this more to the comics more than the movie. In the movie each evil ex has got a whole story arc where they were the antagonist with only Patel being a singular boss fight. In the movie each evil exes are just jumping Scott so frequently in a rush to complete all the story beats that the they can no longer represent relationship baggage the way they did in the comics. But the TV show removes Scott which just changes everything because no body is filtered through Scott’s perspective

I don't know who true it is but the trope that girls experiment in college seems pretty common. Unfortunately the cliche that are gsy people are tossed aside once the straight person gets bored is also a recurring theme. Unfortunately having the conversation of "I was just trying you out, this was never going anywhere" isn't something most college students are mature enough to do delicately.

I've seen people criticize the voice acting...they clearly have no idea what they're talking about. The voices actually match the expressions and the vibe of each character. Mae Whitman's voice literally fits Roxie in this, especially when you see Roxie obviously getting emotional.
@Dell-ol6hb5 ай бұрын
Well the difference is Mae Whitman is a voice actor first, she has way more experience as a VA than the rest of the cast so she is able to deliver an excellent performance. I can see why some people think some of the cast delivered an underwhelming performance, but that’s to be expected since most of them are NOT voice actors so they have way less experience.

Tbf, Mae is legit good and stands out from the others. I don't think they necessarily suck, but most of them don't quite feel as great as true VAs. That being said I got used to it and just enjoyed the novelty of them being virtually the same cast as the movie.
@mandarinduck5 ай бұрын
It depends on the character. I suspect that even though they said the English VAs recorded first, the animation was done to the Japanese VAs because it actually matches how certain Japanese verbal intejections are animated in other shows.

I enjoyed the New Game + Alternate Story route; Secret Boss unlocked version they showed. We all know Scott was a hopeless ass but in the original, we got to see him grow into a hopeless ass with awareness and accountability. We never really got that from Ramona's side - she had all this emotional baggage she was trying to run away from, she never thought of the people she dumped and how it affected them. Whole reason Scott had to fight was because of Ramona's inability to face her past. Seeing her being able to address this and reconcile with that part of herself with those she hurt was pretty cool. Everyone got a happier ending in this version.

Scott Pilgrim is a great example of the "magical realism" subgenre pushed to its extreme. Magical realism has 3 primary rules: 1. The world is VERY normal most of the time. 2. Magical moments go more-or-less unexplained. 3. Characters in the story remain mostly unfazed by the magic. Usually the moments of magic in these stories is kept subtle (often disguised as drug trips or dreams) to maintain the authenticity of the world's mostly ordinary elements. Scott Pilgrim meanwhile has characters summoning demons or getting sucked into movies while STILL maintaining its grounded centre. That isn't easy! ONE misstep is all it takes for everything to implode. The magical elements must follow an internal consistency, otherwise it all feels random and robs the realistic elements of their weight. Yet simultaneously if you ever directly explain/address how the magical elements actually work, you ground them in a way that makes them a permanent part of what's supposed to feel like a realistic world.

For some reason I never realized back then that Rory’s actress is the same Mae Whitman that voiced Katara, 2012 April O Neil, Stephanie Brown and Amity. What a talent. Fun fact, her mother is Pat Musick, the voice actress of the 1980s April O Neil!

The way Ramona dumped Roxie and Lucas made me wonder why anybody would like her. Lucas, the most chillest person in the series got cheated on and Roxy just got dumped by Ramona out of nowhere, like what the hell, Fucking Envy was more likable. Im so glad the anime fixed Ramona and made her realize her mistakes
