To be honest, I didn't make, develop, design, or have any input on the product, so I am not going to take those holding Hyperkin responsible personally. I had nothing to do with it. Now, I did review it and make this video, so criticisms of that (which there really haven't been any) I would potentially take more personally. The burden on Hyperkin is immense right now and they either need to fix this before shipping or push back the launch. For this target consumer it just needs to work. And right now, it doesn't. I also wouldn't say the firmware update process is terrific right now (You'll see in today's video in a few hours). I understand the pressure that Hyperkin is under with this right now, but it is all of their own making.

That emulation is totally unacceptable, IMO. Decent aspect ratios, control over color palates, button remap, save states etc. are not “nice to have” features. They are basically functionality of every emulator I’ve seen for ages. Luckily I still have my Super Game Boy and GBA player, and plenty of emulation options that do a vastly better job. For the life of me I don’t understand why Hyperkin send out review copies in this state as it really sours me on the company. What’s sad is that I’m usually quite forgiving of these products - I don’t really care how coins sound in SMB :) But this is a whole ‘nother level of bad.

Gary, personally I think you were incredibly fair with regards to this review. I think what ultimately disappoints me the most is this isn't the first time I heard hyperkin put a faulty product out there with regards to its initial release you figure with some of the missteps t \hey have made in the past they would learn to address all issues before putting all their finished product out there. It is good that they have addressed the problems with this system and hopefully they'll have it patched so it becomes a better experience for the player but I think video gamep layers are just getting frustrated that regardless if its a brand new release or a piece of hardware/firmware - it seems like everything need a patch. I think it's almost expected at this point but hopefully they'll fix the issues with it so it can be a competent product.

Since the Retron 5, I don't know that Hyperkin has had a great track record with systems that use software emulation. They Smart Boy was one of their first items I reviewed and I was incredibly disappointed about that. I am hoping the firmware update they sent addresses the issues, but I also hope that Hyperkin reworks the stock internally and doesn't make the customer apply the patch from the box.

They seem to be re-releasing all of their clone consoles without the cut-off corner on the boxes. The re-released Retron 3 HD also doesn't have the cut corner and they now include a SNES-to-NES controller adapter so you could use the included Scout controller to play the NES games, since they originally didn't include a Cadet controller with it.

Great and thorough review! That being said, I really dislike how these companies are now starting to literally depend on the community to make their supposed "plug and play" devices to have acceptable emulation. When open source devices are sold, it is typically done in a manner where you are mainly paying for cost associated with components and hardware production. This isnt what Hyperkin is doing. They are still selling these things as if they are full fledged retail products, as if the included software emulation is worth something in its current state. I understand if they want to stray from the Retron 5 situation, but if Hyperkin isn't skilled enough to implement acceptable emulation in-house, then they should stop producing emulation boxes and stick to clone consoles. Open source products priced the same as fully developed hardware shouldn't fly. But again, great review on your part!

It's disappointing to see such a good idea so poorly executed. I really can't understand Hyperkin's thought process. How can they think this is acceptable to release? The Retron 5 did GBA much better. There's no excuse for why this can't play GBA at least as good as the Retron 5. I think the GBA software is in Beta because there was some controversy involving the emulator they used on the Retron5, so they had to build a new one from the ground up. You're right about Super Mario Bros. 3. It looked very sloppy. Overall I'm weary of Hyperkin's software-based consoles. I bought a Retron5, but I ended up returning it because it only played about 5 of my games right out of the box, and the firmware update didn't help, and reviews I've read and seen indicate that I wasn't the only one who had an experience like that. I've also heard glowing reviews from people who say their console works flawlessly, so it seems like a very hit or miss product. Overall I would've preferred a hardware-based approach. In my opinion Hyperkin's real strength is in their controller and their hardware clones. The Hyper Beach color scheme is absolutely gorgeous, and I hope we see it on more products. One thing to note, Game Boy and Game Boy Advance games are region free, and the Japanese Game Boy Player and discs are more common than the North American version, so a few years ago I picked up a Japanese GameCube (no controller or power/video cables, but I had all that so it was fine), a Game Boy Player with the disc for $50 total. I don't know if the prices are the same now, but it's worth looking into for folks who want a cheap way to play GB games on a TV.

So from what I understand the reason the GBA emulation is half baked compared to the retron 5 seems to be because they're writing a custom emulator from the ground up because of the controversy from the emulator of the retron 5. Mostly I hope the sq reads games better than the 5 because I had so much trouble getting the 5 to read my games properly. I'm also holding out for GBA to be fixed sooner than later because this seems like it'd be a very good solution for a lot of people. My main gameboy playing tv hook up will remain my gameboy player but I might use the sq in a room with no cube. Seriously though my biggest disappointment was that there's no link cable port. Like why not? I get there's probably a technical reason but if they manage to make one of these things with one I'll pay extra for that feature.

This just seems like a bad deal against the R5. This is, what, $70? Save up the extra $50 and go with the better option. Though I guess at that point, you're better off with a Raspberry Pi with an emulator suite.
@RoXolid3 жыл бұрын
If you're playing real cartridges and not downloading ROMs the Retron 5 is currently the better experience. But, as they get the additional firmware updates going, if you don't care about the other systems this will save you money

It’s clearly garbage.
@RoXolid3 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't classify it as garbage, but it does need firmware improvements

If this is the outcome of the Retron SQ, you'd be better off spending twice as much to purchase a Retron 5.

@@RoXolid I'm just going to have to surrender and purchase myself the new edition Retron 5. I don't care too much for that color scheme, but as long as it can give me decent gba and gbc gameplay. About to order one right now from Amazon! I've seen many positive KZbin reviews for the new Retron 5 recently.

Ahh man, yeah have to agree with most comments here! Personally Ive a huge game and console collection(@mattyjjenkins) play loads go GameBoy/GBC/GBA and love them, play on my PAL GameCube using EXTREMS awesome GBI software, SWISS and CARBY, I no its totally night and day comparing Woozle GBA Consolizer to this but that like £300plus, had high hops the SQ was gunna be a cool budget way to play GameBoy on the home TV, so, so disappointed! :(

Another disappointing product from Hyperkin, not only does it had compatibility issue now but all the GBA games had framerate issue making all of them pretty much unplayable. Not only that but Hyperkin still did not learn from their Retron 5 experiment and is still missing link cable support something you may need if you want to play multiplayer on some games or trade Pokemon with friends. Even the Retro-Bit Retro Advance adapter which came out 6 years ago manage to do GBA better and had link cable support. Not only is this product in beta, it's unfinished and felt very rushed.
@RoXolid3 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure how important link cables are on the whole. I have no need for one, but I do acknowledge there are those who do want it. Since the controller port is USB I don't know whether a USB port adapter would make it possible?

Why can't hyperkin make a system on a chip clone of anything!!!!??? They used stolen software when they launched the retron 5. Im sure now that has been resolved but the fact that they did not want to release their source code when requested and all the reliability issues it has. I refuse to buy from them. I hope that someone like Retro Bit or even the guys here in Phoenix from Fallout Games can make one that is a system on a chip so it can be a console not an emulator. I love the idea and wish there was something like this but I lost respect for hyperkin and refuse to purchase an emulator instead of a console.

This is like early access to a game but to a whole console. Doesn't make sense..

Hyperkin will ruin their reputation if they are not careful. Theirs is akin to AtGames when they need to compete with these polymega, analogue, retro bit companies. Extremely dissapointed in this and them. A bad look

True, but if you have nothing look at the cost of a Gamecube, Game Boy Player with Disc, Prism, Carby, or GCHD MkII to get to HDMI, you're already 3x the cost of this. I just finished the firmware update, stay tuned!

Well normally I like to look at these products and see something of value even if I don't like the product or think it's poor but this thing is literal garbage. It can't even play Gameboy, Gameboy Color and Gameboy Advance games properly in the correct aspect ratio. There is absolutely no reason for anyone to purchase this yet. If you like real cartridges the Retron 5 is at least better and the GameCube GameBoy player is great especially with homebrew software. If you want emulation pretty much every generic Chinese clone could do a better job. At current the product is useless to everyone. I am not really a fan of these cheaper clone systems like the Retron HD but at least they play most of the games in a playable manner in the correct aspect ratio for a low price.
